Crazed Fruit (Criterion Collection)Crazed Fruit (Criterion Collection)
Buy new: $26.99 / Used from: $16.99
This 1954 film may seem a little tame by today's standards but it ushered in a whole new era of film with it's strong language, rebellious youth, and sexual tension. The ending still shocks.

Admittedly more art than exploitation, this film is undeniably erotic, twisted, gorgeously shot, and simply one of the best Japanese films ever made.
Gate of Flesh - Criterion CollectionGate of Flesh - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $26.99 / Used from: $11.77
Released in 1964, this was the first film from a major studio to feature nudity. The renegade band of prostitutes anticipates the girl-gang pictures by about eight years. Plus, they discipline each other through some pretty intense naked flogging! Beautifully shot postwar drama with heavy S&M themes.
Branded to Kill (Criterion Collection Spine #38)Branded to Kill (Criterion Collection Spine #38)

Seijun Suzuki was always best at taking a cookie-cutter genre script and making it into a masterpiece. This one was so bizzare that Nikkatsu fired him. Joe Shishido stars and has silicone implants in his cheeks to look more "western"(!)
The Sword of Doom - Criterion CollectionThe Sword of Doom - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $24.49 / Used from: $13.99
There's no nudity in this gorgeously shot black and white samurai pic, but it has one of the hottest and most artistic sex scenes of any in the genre. Tatsuya Nakadai is tremendous.
Blackmail Is My LifeBlackmail Is My Life
Buy new: $26.99 / Used from: $6.58
A jazzy and swift crime caper from 1968 by Kinji Fukasaku (Battle Royale). Some nifty camera techniques and quick editing make this a better than your average genre picture.
Legends of the Poisonous Seductress #1: Female Demon OhyakuLegends of the Poisonous Seductress #1: Female Demon Ohyaku
Buy new: $22.49 / Used from: $9.77
The first part of the trilogy, it features a nifty horror/torture device that Argento would have loved. In beautiful black and white. It's the best of the three.
Legends of the Poisonous Seductress #2: Quick Draw OkatsuLegends of the Poisonous Seductress #2: Quick Draw Okatsu
Buy new: $22.49 / Used from: $9.48
The second film of the trilogy, this one is in color and directed by Nobuo Nakagawa who brings more of a formal approach to the film. See it on as big a screen as you can as he favors the wide shot. Junko Miyazono reprises her role as the swordswoman who seems to look hotter the more her hair gets messed up.
Female Prisoner #701 - ScorpionFemale Prisoner #701 - Scorpion
Buy new: $19.95 / Used from: $6.98
Shunya Ito directs this Women In Prison film with an auteur's flourish. Meiko Kaji stars in her greatest role. She also sang the theme song which was a huge hit.
Female Convict Scorpion: Jailhouse 41Female Convict Scorpion: Jailhouse 41
Buy used from: $38.94
The most experimental and arty of the series. Like Seijun Suzuki, Ito takes a flimsy studio Women In Prison script and makes a surrealist masterpiece out of it.
Female Prisoner #701 Scorpion: Beast StableFemale Prisoner #701 Scorpion: Beast Stable
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $10.46
The third of the series and my favorite. From the spectacular opening to the the grisly ending it never misses a beat. Ito reels in the excessiveness of the second film and tells a very simple story with very little dialogue. I have watched it over and over.
Scorpion - Female Prisoner 701: Grudge SongScorpion - Female Prisoner 701: Grudge Song
Buy new: $19.95 / Used from: $5.15
By the time Toei came out with the fourth Scorpion film in 1973, they had run out of inspiration. The only film not directed by Ito, it's the weakest. Still, Kaji is always watchable. Her next film was Lady Snowblood for Toho.
Lady SnowbloodLady Snowblood
Buy new: $26.99 / Used from: $14.99
Die hard Kill Bill fans know all about where Lucy Liu's character came from. In fact many elements of this female swordplay revenge drama were copped for KB. Even Meiko Kaji's theme song Shura No Hana was used in KB Vol. 1. It's a great film and probably Kaji's most entertaining.
Lady Snowblood - Love Song of VengeanceLady Snowblood - Love Song of Vengeance
Buy new: $26.99 / Used from: $7.71
Not as good as the first but better than most. An interesting note: Juzo Itami (director of Tampopo, A Taxing Woman, The Funeral) appears in the film as an anarchist.
Sex and FurySex and Fury
Buy used from: $21.89
If you were watching Lady Snowblood and thought "That's cool, but I wish she'd get naked!" then this movie is for you. Nowadays in Japanese Pink Cinema, actresses who can act don't get naked, and actresses who get naked can't fight. Reiko does all three. This movie is a hoot.
Female Yakuza Tale - Inquisition and TortureFemale Yakuza Tale - Inquisition and Torture
Buy used from: $15.46
The opening scene of this Sex and Fury "sequel" has Reiko Ike fighting off her attackers in the rain fully nude. FYT is darker in tine than Sex and Fury with a simpler story. There is also a character who is a deadpan parody of Meiko Kaji's Scorpion persona!

There's a reason this Toho series is not released on DVD in Japan. The main woman (who's half asian) is the oddest pinky violence heroine ever. Still, I kinda love it. See my review on amazon. Avoid part 2. Part 3 is slightly better.

A gorgeously packaged collection. Delinquent Girl Boss: Worthless to Confess is my favorite. I love that Reiko Oshida! None of these films are GREAT FILMS but if you're a fan of Pinky Violence, how can you resist?

One wonders why a major star like Tetsuro Tanba would appear it a B movie like this until one realizes that none of the numerous female characters wear a stitch of clothing. Plot? Who cares!
Lone Wolf and Cub - Baby Cart in PerilLone Wolf and Cub - Baby Cart in Peril

This entire series is classic and definitely worth watching. I singled out this one because it features a tatooed and topless female assasin.

Unlike Hong Kong, Japan doesn't have a history of female martial arts stars. Sue Shiomi more than makes up for that. Plus, her films are violent, have some nudity, and are vastly entertaining. This box set is a real bargain.
Zero Woman Red HandcuffsZero Woman Red Handcuffs
Of all the Pinky Violence actresses, Miki Sugimoto is the least compelling. This film, however, works through it's own crazy energy. It's utter trash but still artistic trash so it made the list.
Angel Guts - Red ClassroomAngel Guts - Red Classroom
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $12.22
Truly artistic softcore porn. Dark and sometimes disturbing. Based on a manga by Takashi Ishii who also provided the well written script. The best of the series.
Angel Guts - Red PornoAngel Guts - Red Porno
Buy new: $17.49 / Used from: $17.49
This 1981 pink film is the fourth in the Angel Guts series and stars Jun Izumi - the prettiest and sexiest of all the actresses to play "Nami" the lonely protagonist. It is very stylishly shot with heaps of atmosphere. The director Toshiharu Ikeda also directed the classic horror film Evil Dead Trap.
A Snake of JuneA Snake of June

Shinya Tsukamoto is best known for his astonishing debut Tetsuo: The Iron Man but this surreal/erotic thriller is an overlooked gem.
Flower & SnakeFlower & Snake
Buy new: $19.49 / Used from: $17.54
Aya Sugimoto is ravishing in this S&M tale from the creator of the Angel Guts series. The dungeon scenes are titillating, disturbing, and sometimes annoying. The bonus interview with the actress on the dvd reveals one enlightened lady. She returned for Flower & Snake II.

Takashi Miike's splatter/horror/musical is unlike any other movie I've ever seen. It goes so far over-the-top yet never loses it's heart. Some key scenes of the film are portrayed through claymation! It probably doesn't belong on this list but it's so good I had to add it.

Is there anybody who hasn't seen this? The creepiest film ever made!

Many of Kitano's films show yakuza life during their down time. So between the bursts of violence are long hysterical sequences illustrating the boredom and ennui of being a gangster. These are the best parts of his films.
Suicide Club (Suicide Circle)Suicide Club (Suicide Circle)
Buy new: $14.49 / Used from: $5.20
Many people watch this film for the grisly opening and then lose interest. My advice: don't expect a slasher/horror fiesta. It's more of a creepy urban cyber-thriller. It's excellent.
The Blind Swordsman: Zatoichi /Sonatine Double FeatureThe Blind Swordsman: Zatoichi /Sonatine Double Feature
Buy new: $19.99 / Used from: $5.73
Kitano's take on Zatoichi is freshly original (the ending dance sequence is so joyous my wife and I rewound it 7 times) and Sonatine is the most artistic and irreverent gangster film ever made.
Perfect BluePerfect Blue

I'm not a huge fan of anime but this film seems to transcend the form. I forgot I was watching a cartoon. Erotic and creepy with a well written script.

I avoided this film for a while because I heard that it was just two actresses on a single set. But alas, that's just where it starts! Inventive, twisted, and darkly funny.
The Machine GirlThe Machine Girl

Brainless but entertaining. This seems to be where a lot of Japanese exploitation is currently heading - with an eye on the international market.
