The Snowy DayThe Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $0.59
Urban classic. Lovely book about a book who cherishes a day (or two) of fresh snowfall in the city.
Metropolitan CowMetropolitan Cow
Buy new: $6.95 / Used from: $1.99
Nice tale about city living. The parents are watered-down racists, who learn that it's a nice thing when children of all species play together.
The Pushcart WarThe Pushcart War by Jean Merrill
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $0.01
A fun, long story about the humble pushcart sellers of New York, who wage a peaceful war against the city's evil truckers. It's a message celebrating the little guy, simple things, low technology, and solidarity. A book for peaceniks and their kids/grandkids. I loved and remembered this from childhood in the 1970s. Long, even as a read aloud tale, but good fun.
Going up with Grover: A counting bookGoing up with Grover: A counting book by Linda Hayward
Buy used from: $0.01
Grover and the Sesame Street gang have fun with an elevator, counting up the ten floors, taking a swim on the roof, then going down the ten floors. Lots of funny little things to find in the pictures, such as when cookie monster mistakes a girl's hat for a cookie. A fun ride.
From the Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Basil E. FrankweilerFrom the Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler by E.L. Konigsburg
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $4.95
I really disliked this chapter book (read it out loud to my six year old), but it's certainly an urban tale. Connecticut kids wind up living in the Metropolitan Museum of Art (NYC) for a week. Very popular with most readers.
Clever CatClever Cat by Peter Collington
Buy used from: $17.19
I like the illustrations and much of the story of this apartment living cat. But why does the family have to be such a hateful bunch?
Black Cat (Coretta Scott King Illustrator Honor Books)Black Cat (Coretta Scott King Illustrator Honor Books)
Buy new: $12.23 / Used from: $0.64
A cat poetically makes her way through the urban landscape (Brooklyn?). A bit too mature and artistic for its young target audience.
Whistle For Willie (Live Oak Readalong)Whistle For Willie (Live Oak Readalong) by Ezra Jack Keats

Another urban classic for young ones, by Ezra Jack Keats.
MAKE WAY FOR DUCKLINGSMAKE WAY FOR DUCKLINGS by Robert McCloskey

The classic tale of a family of ducks trying to cope with Boston's noise and traffic.
