Buy new: $23.98 / Used from: $14.96 A classic performance, filled with beauty and depth

![]() | Brahms: Concerto No.2/Beethoven: Sonata No.23 by Sviatoslav Richter
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $4.00 This recording is all the more exciting because it was Richter's U.S. recording debut. He is in top form, and the Chicago Symphony responds to him.

![]() | Brahms: Piano Concerto No. 2; Klavierstücke, Op. 119
Serkin recorded this work four times. This last one with Szell was his most successful.

![]() | Piano Concerti 1 & 2 / Haydn 5
Buy used from: $7.95 Arrau brings his aristocratic and noble bearing to this work. The Concertgebouw sounds lush and full under Haitink.

![]() | Brahms:Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No.2 In B Flat Major
Buy used from: $6.25 One of the finest accounts available. The Penguin Guide only gave it a couple of stars but it deserves more.

![]() | Complete Concertos / Overtures by Brahms
Buy used from: $16.24 This is a memorable performance. This whole set has admirable offerings -- Szeryng's last recording of the Violin Concerto is special, as is Brendel's recording of Brahms' 1st.

![]() | Brahms: Piano Concertos Nos. 1 & 2
Buy new: $24.98 / Used from: $53.30 Moravec is accompanied by the Czech Philharmonic in a 1980's digital performance. The digital sound reveals lots of orchestral detail that makes this recording a welcome addition to the catalogue.

![]() | Leon Fleisher Plays Brahms
Buy new: $15.93 / Used from: $12.78 Considered to be one of the great recordings of the Brahms 2nd. I prefer the more contemplative approach by Gilels/Jochum or Arrau/Haitink.

![]() | Brahms: Piano Concerto No. 2 / Variations on a Theme by Haydn for Orchestra Op. 56a by Johannes Brahms
Buy new: $9.98 / Used from: $3.22 Very good performance in outstanding stereo sound. The Brahms 1st is even more memorable. Nice collaboration between Gutierrez and Previn

![]() | Brahms: Piano Concertos No. 1 & 2 - Tragic Overture, etc.. / Barenboim, Barbirolli by Johannes Brahms
Buy used from: $36.99 One of the most heralded performances of Brahms 2nd when it first came out. Barenboim's playing is noble and monumental and he is well supported by Barbirolli. One now hears some less than perfect piano playing when compared to more contemporary accounts.
|
![]() | Brahms: Piano Concerto No. 2; Cello Sonata, Op. 78
Buy new: $7.98 / Used from: $2.49 Consistently well regarded by the critics, yet it leaves me a little disappointed. Ax is one of my favorite Brahms interpreters but he doesn't have the technical polish and excitement that Richter can bring to this work. Also Jules Eskin's lovely cello solo in the 3rd movement is almost inaudible.

![]() | Brahms: Concerto No. 2/Tchaikovsky: Concerto No. 1
Buy used from: $20.98 Marred only by the 1950's era recording technology. This is an exciting performance.
|
![]() | Brahms: Piano Concerto No. 2; Haydn Variations
Buy used from: $3.95 A knock-him-between-the-eyes version, quite in contrast to his account with Jochum. This one with Reiner and the Chicago Symphony is an earlier account more akin in spirit to Richter's account with the same orchestra.
|
![]() | Brahms: Piano Concerto No. 2 by Johannes Brahms
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $7.28 One cannot really find fault with this performance but it also does not stand out among the competition for me.
|
![]() | Brahms: Piano Concertos/Intermezzi
Buy used from: $18.94 The stereo acoustic is not ideal and the performance, although very good, does not outshine the competition.
