Essential Post Rock
By an Amazon.com customer
Ágætis ByrjunÁgætis Byrjun by Sigur Rós
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $7.50
While not necessarily in the vein of what is generally considered 'Post Rock', this is still the greatest record you could obtain from the genre. Eerie, experimental, highly artistic, and highly addictive, this album demands multiple listens.
( )( ) by Sigur Rós
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $3.50
This is another great introduction to the wonders of Sigur Rós. This one may be considered all-instrumental considering the vocal work is done in a nonexistent language, thus only incorporating the voice as an instrument in itself. With this and the previously mentioned record, you should know that the rest of this band's albums should be picked up as well.
Yanqui U.X.O.Yanqui U.X.O. by Godspeed You Black Emperor!
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $5.97
I have said many times to many people beforehand that nobody does Post Rock like Godspeed You! Black Emperor. If you are going to get into Post Rock, this is the band to pay close attention to. Even though they are no longer around, they are still vital to the genre. This album is a wonderful introduction to them.
Slow Riot for New Zero KanadaSlow Riot for New Zero Kanada by Godspeed You Black Emperor!
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $6.50
While this is only an EP, the two tracks within are well worth the attention I am giving it. Clocking in at just under thirty minutes, this EP contains one of the most epic of GY!BE's compositions.
Mr. BeastMr. Beast by Mogwai
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $4.97
Mogwai, like Godspeed You! Black Emperor, have made a name for themselves in this genre. Their compositions break the traditional formula of Post Rock and give the music a more 'straight-forward' approach with less lengthy songs with a more apparent 'pop' feel. Highly recommended.
Hymn to the Immortal WindHymn to the Immortal Wind by Mono
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $7.64
If you want to know true orchestrated, punishing rock sounds like, you listen to Mono. 'Hymn to the Immortal Wind' brings together the grittiest guitar screeches with the most beautiful sounds of orchestra. Truly fit for its title.
Born into Trouble as the Sparks Fly UpwardBorn into Trouble as the Sparks Fly Upward by The Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra and Tra-la-la Band
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $9.37
As a spin-off from the now defunct Godspeed You! Black Emperor, A Silver Mt. Zion offers some of the same-vein compositions under a different light. This album presents their highest point.
Yndi Halda (Enjoy Eternal Bliss)Yndi Halda (Enjoy Eternal Bliss) by Yndi Halda
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $40.59
Virtually unknown to the music world, Yndi Halda have composed an EP of such worth to be ranked in the top portion of the genre. 'Enjoy Eternal Bliss' takes you through a journey of some of the most thoughtful Post Rock.
Doomsdayer's HolidayDoomsdayer's Holiday by Grails
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $3.99
Grails may very well be one of the most unique in the genre. They combine the basic and traditional elements of Post Rock with a cool, Eastern groove. Don't underestimate them. They are just as punishing as anything you can imagine.
Far from RefugeFar from Refuge by God Is an Astronaut
Buy used from: $13.40
In a world of growing popularity for electronic music, it's refreshing to find a group that can combine such a diverse sound with one that is a little more familiar to create something irresistible. This album contains just that as well as my favorite composition from this group, 'Grace Descending'.
In a Safe PlaceIn a Safe Place by The Album Leaf
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $4.94
Speaking of electronic music, The Album Leaf can be described as the epitome of what electronic music should be. It is an act so impressive and beautiful, that it caught the attention of Sigur Rós's Jónsi Birgisson, which also provides guest vocal work on this album. This is definitely worth your time.
