Map of the Harbor IslandsMap of the Harbor Islands by J. G. Hayes
Buy used from: $5.55
It isn't often that I call a book a masterpiece. This unquestionably is one -- the best book I've read in many, many months, never mind the best gay book. If you read nothing else, read this. Stunning -- moving, funny, sad, consummately written, with an unexpected twist in the tail. A wonderful celebration of love and friendship, of the things that make life bearable despite loss and sorrow.
SwordspointSwordspoint by Ellen Kushner
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $0.78
This is a marvellous and compelling story, about a perfectly convincing and internally consistent city and country, 18th century in feel. The relationship between the two main male characters is understated but profound. It will leave you thinking about them long after you've closed the book.
The ProtectorThe Protector by N.L. Gassert
Buy new: $11.16 / Used from: $8.97
Soren is an apparently straight young man in trouble. Mason is a tough, cynical older guy. Soren needs protecting, from his father, terrorists and a potentially lethal former girlfriend. A gripping thriller and a touching and romantic love story -- nominated for a lambda award. More, please!
The LodgerThe Lodger by Drew Gummerson
Buy used from: $4.58
A fantastic story. A straight lodger comes to live with a jaded gay man. He really is straight. Well, he acts straight. And he's in some kind of trouble. And they become friends. And . . . . but you will have to read it yourself and see how cleverly the author develops the entirely satisfying ending.
The Fire's Stone (Daw science fiction)The Fire's Stone (Daw science fiction) by Tanya Huff
Buy used from: $1.46
The first Tanya Huff book where she really started to write fluently and convincingly. Funny, moving, heart-warming, polished and satisfying. I reread it every few months, whenevr I'm feeling depressed. You can read my detailed review if you click on the book link. It has been reprinted as part of a Tanya Huff omnibus edition.
Bit of RoughBit of Rough by Laura Baumbach
Buy used from: $18.20
Two men fall in lust and in love. They go thru all the vicissitudes that lovers do, and at the end (of course) it all works out. It'll leave you with a lovely warm glow. Um. Did I say that?
WraeththuWraeththu by Storm Constantine
Buy new: $13.57 / Used from: $1.06
An extraordinary accomplishment -- fantastical, magical, marvellous, weird, enthralling. A mixture of post-apocalyptic SF and fantasy, it's the story of the love between Calanthe and Pellaz, though there are many love stories in the 3 volumes.
Luck in the Shadows (Nightrunner, Vol. 1)Luck in the Shadows (Nightrunner, Vol. 1) by Lynn Flewelling
Buy new: $7.50 / Used from: $1.90
This has all the flaws of a first novel. Yet it is amazingly compelling, and the way the love between Alec and Seregil develops is touching and in the end engrossing. Lynn Flewelling gets much more polished in her subsequent novels. All the same, in many ways, this is still my favourite. Those who know my own novels will immediately see how much LITS has influenced my writing.
Troublemaker: A Dave Brandstetter Mystery (Dave Brandstetter Mysteries)Troublemaker: A Dave Brandstetter Mystery (Dave Brandstetter Mysteries) by Joseph Hansen
Buy new: $12.95 / Used from: $3.00
This was the first Joseph Hansen I read. He is an awesome author -- smooth, polished, accomplished, convincing and riveting. I wish I could write this well! Dave Brandstetter is a great Californian PI -- cynical, sharp, humane, with just the right touch of compassion. His loves are woven through the series, a human backdrop to the these classic PI tales. Sumptuous and perfect. Don't miss it.
Fire from HeavenFire from Heaven by Mary Renault
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $1.05
The story of Alexander the Great's youth, up to his victories over the Persian Empire. Like most Greeks, he was bi, but it seems clear that the great love of his life was Hephaistion, who was his best friend and lover. Love scenes that are gourmet rather than gourmand.
The CharioteerThe Charioteer by Mary Renault
Buy new: $10.76 / Used from: $3.23
This was the first book about gay men I ever read. The love triangle between Ralph, Laurie and Andrew is beutifully described and developed. Authentic, moving, humane, civilized. Marvellous. (I have to say, the cover of this edition is highly feeble)
All We Have Is Now: A NovelAll We Have Is Now: A Novel by Robert Taylor
Buy used from: $0.01
An older man loses his long-time lover to AIDS. He decides not to let his heart go walkies again, but a younger man pursues him. He falls in love again -- and then the younger man is murdered in a hate attack. A "minor masterpiece" I called it in my detailed review. It'll break your heart. But it will lift you up, too.
Full CircleFull Circle by Michael Thomas Ford
Buy new: $17.25 / Used from: $0.24
This is (another!) story of best friends who became lovers. But it has a twist -- there's a third person in the mixture. It's about the power of love, the need for forgiveness, the way we can go on loving even when we've been betrayed. His writing gets better with each book. Some of the earlier chapters drag a little -- but no matter. Read it!
The Zookeeper: A NovelThe Zookeeper: A Novel by Alex MacLennan
Buy new: $14.95 / Used from: $0.01
He writes a beut story, subtle and clever with unexpected twists. I like the story and the protagonist very much. But it's the sort of quiet novel a gay Jane Austen might have written. Since she is my favourite author, that is high praise. And I very much like the unexpected ending.
The Hell You Say (Adrien English)The Hell You Say (Adrien English) by Josh Lanyon
Buy new: $15.29 / Used from: $11.99
Once you get past the standard problem of any mystery series (how come an ordinary person gets involved in so many murders?), this variation on the classic country house mystery is well-written, internally convincing, funny, sad, and deepened by the narrator's personal tragedy. Nicely evil baddies, a subtle and satisfying hero. A real page turner. With a very moving tribute to Joseph Hansen.
Miles, Mystery & MayhemMiles, Mystery & Mayhem by Lois McMaster Bujold
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $1.55
An engrossing writer, romantic, humane, honest, and great reading.Read especially Ethan of Athos in this omnibus edition. From a planet of men,who reproduce themselves with 'uterine replicators'.When Athos's cloned wombs start dying,Ethan is sent off-planet to find new sources.A touching, warming romance, thought-provoking and really gripping. Wicked GentlemenWicked Gentlemen by Ginn Hale
Buy new: $12.95 / Used from: $12.00
Pretty good for a first novel. An interesting thesis – demons have been allowed to come up from Hell, to live among humans after a concordat between Heaven and Hell. Sounds ridiculous, but Hale uses the idea to explore issues of the underdog, of love between classes/species, and the iniquity of religious inquisitions. Cowboy UpCowboy Up by Rob Knight
Buy new: $14.35 / Used from: $9.85
An anthology of romantic gay cowboy love stories, contemporary and set in the classic cowboy heyday. They're all good, but my favourite is Parhelion's Dry Bones. Great anthology and Dry Bones alone is worth the price.
The Aerodynamics of PorkThe Aerodynamics of Pork by Patrick Gale
Buy used from: $3.34
Patrick Gale's first novel is amazingly accomplished. I like the way this isn't just a 'gay romance' but cleverly twines two apparently different tales into one. So good. Touching, warm, sad, moving, fulfilling, satisfying. And as often happens in his novels, the characters appear tangentially in his other books. I’ve listed two other novels of his, but I like nearly all of them.
The Year of Ice: A NovelThe Year of Ice: A Novel by Brian Malloy
Buy new: $11.16 / Used from: $0.99
Perhaps not quite 'romantic' in the sense other books in this list are, all the same, it's 'romantic' in its view of teenage life and coming of age. More than just a 'gay book', there are some very poignant moments, and you get the feeling at the end that Kevin Doyle will be a nicer and happier person because of what he endures through this year.
Memoirs of HadrianMemoirs of Hadrian by Marguerite Yourcenar
Buy new: $10.88 / Used from: $5.97
Hadrian's rule over the Roman Empire was characterised by Gibbon as one of "the happiest eras for mankind". He was a stoic and an epicurean, and passionately in love with his slave Antinous. A marvellous story about one of the most civilized and humane rulers ever.
Rough Music (Ballantine Reader's Circle)Rough Music (Ballantine Reader's Circle) by Patrick Gale
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $2.13
This is a wonderful novel. I wish I'd written it. There are two apparently separate stories, one taking place today and one thirty years ago, and as the novel progresses you see how they link. About family and love and infidelity and forgiveness it is quite masterly. One of my favourites of his.
Drawing BloodDrawing Blood by Poppy Z. Brite
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $1.21
PZB's second novel. Startlingly good and refreshingly different. Supernatural and fantastic elements flesh out a touching romance and a very gripping thriller. Probably her best, certainly her angriest, though I very much like her latest novels too.
Comfort and JoyComfort and Joy by Jim Grimsley
Buy used from: $6.39
Beutifully written -- a heartwarming yet *utterly* convincing love story between a doctor and a male nurse. It's so very satisfying, so totally real it'll leave you pensive and moved for weeks afterwards.
Clay's Way: A NovelClay's Way: A Novel by Blair Mastbaum
Buy new: $11.07 / Used from: $1.04
I'm not sure this should be in this list. Yes, it is a wonderful love story (and an excellent first novel), but.... Well, you get to like the protagonist Sam and to very much dislike the guy he falls in love with. But the novel is picture perfect, superb writing, totally convincing dialog, and a perfect evocation of teenage love. It's good. Read it.
The Facts of LifeThe Facts of Life by Patrick Gale
Buy used from: $4.85
This entirely satisfying and pleasing novel is really two stories in one: the love storey of Edward, a refugee from Nazi Germany, and Sally, his doctor who treats him for TB, and of his grandchildren, Jamie and Alison who both fall in love with a working class 'tough' called Sam. Sad, romantic, masterly, perfect. You MUST read this.
Tribute TrailTribute Trail by Chris Power
Buy new: $11.50 / Used from: $4.38
This is a curious novel. A fantastic (in both senses) world reminiscent of the Mongols or the Scythians, m2m love fits right in next to het. Wonderful and exotic world-building,and a tasteful romance, it's dream-like and fantastical. But there are many infelicities, of language and style. Still... I was transported from this world to a mythic world unlike anything I've seen elsewhere.
Rockstarlet: A NovelRockstarlet: A Novel by Stewart Lewis
Buy new: $13.16 / Used from: $0.79
Jackson Poole signs a contract with a big name in the music industry. Whoop-de-doo! Except he must pretend to be straight. A first novel with all the flaws of a first novel, but still heart-warming and romantic.
Now Is the HourNow Is the Hour by Tom Spanbauer
Buy new: $11.66 / Used from: $0.01
This is a wonderful story,a coming-of-age novel which moves and saddens and uplifts.Magical in both sense of the word,it's tender, accomplished, amazing.Rigby John Klusener is a gem.The secondary characters are finely drawn too.And the disreputable guys Rigby takes up with are drawn with affection and compassion. The tension builds in the last few pages to a perfect conclusion.
