The decided strengths are Browne's vintage hardboiled tone, Chandleresque metaphors, and gritty Chicago setting. "Poor old Pine" is a likeable P.I., going to movies and reading William P. McGivern, a fellow crime fiction writer. Enjoyable, brisk read.
