The Pillars of the EarthThe Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett
Buy new: $14.51 / Used from: $0.20
A lengthy quasi-epic that brings to life the colorful characters whose lives revolve around the construction of a medieval cathedral. Follett weaves together the stories of multiple generations in captivating style.
The Kite RunnerThe Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini
Buy new: $9.75 / Used from: $0.01
No surprise here, but this is a novel even my reluctant student readers grow to love.
A Thousand Splendid SunsA Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini
Buy new: $17.13 / Used from: $0.01
Hosseini's follow-up to The Kite Runner is just as rich in character development and Afghan culture.
Mere ChristianityMere Christianity by C. S. Lewis
Buy new: $10.07 / Used from: $2.26
C.S. Lewis's treatise on the fundamentals of Christianity (from a former atheist's perspective) is astounding in its clarity of thought and expression.
The Poisonwood Bible: A Novel (P.S.)The Poisonwood Bible: A Novel (P.S.) by Barbara Kingsolver
Buy new: $10.79 / Used from: $0.30
Another rich character study that focuses on the women in a Georgian missionary family gone to serve in the Congo and the severe culture shock they experience.
The Princess Bride: S Morgenstern's Classic Tale of True Love and High AdventureThe Princess Bride: S Morgenstern's Classic Tale of True Love and High Adventure by William Goldman
Buy used from: $0.01
One of the few instances where the book and the movie are equally good--yet slightly different.
Freakonomics [Revised and Expanded]: A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of EverythingFreakonomics [Revised and Expanded]: A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything by Steven D. Levitt
Buy new: $14.48 / Used from: $4.49
Just a thought-provoking read that examines everything from children's names to standardized testing and beyond.
The Handmaid's TaleThe Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $0.82
For fans of 1984, Fahrenheit 451, and Brave New World, this is a slightly different take on a futuristic dystopia.
A Tale of Two Cities (Penguin Classics)A Tale of Two Cities (Penguin Classics) by Charles Dickens
Buy new: $8.00 / Used from: $0.01
This has to be my favorite Dickens; I love the symbolism and the historical backdrop of the French Revolution.
I Know This Much Is True (Oprah's Book Club)I Know This Much Is True (Oprah's Book Club) by Wally Lamb
Buy used from: $0.01
Lamb's honest exploration of troubled characters in this and "She's Come Undone" left me wanting more books from him.
Fast Food NationFast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser
Buy new: $10.19 / Used from: $3.00
Forget "Supersize Me"; I haven't eaten at McDonald's or Burger King since reading this book several years ago, and I'm not usually much of a bandwagon type. Unlike Morgan Spurlock's documentary, this book explores all aspects of fast food's "evil empires"--social, economical, and political--not just nutritional.
The Time Traveler's WifeThe Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger
Buy new: $7.97 / Used from: $2.45
A strange premise, but the characters make you want to keep reading.
The Red TentThe Red Tent by Anita Diamant
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $0.01
Particularly for those who have grown up reading Bible stories, this book plucks an obscure character out of the Old Testament and gives her significance in this fictional piece. "The Gilded Chamber," about Queen Esther, falls into the same category and is just as good.
Under the Overpass: A Journey of Faith on the Streets of AmericaUnder the Overpass: A Journey of Faith on the Streets of America by Mike Yankoski
Buy new: $8.63 / Used from: $5.53
As a social experiment, this college student embarks on a journey as a homeless person for a few months. The experiment is a bit contrived, but it certainly makes you second guess your view of homeless people.
The Dante Club: A NovelThe Dante Club: A Novel by Matthew Pearl
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.01
Particulary if you have read and appreciated Dante's Inferno, this story of a serial killer who models his killings after punishments in The Inferno makes for a captivating literary thriller. This is set during the time when Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was working on the first American translation of the Divine Comedy.
My Sister's Keeper: A NovelMy Sister's Keeper: A Novel by Jodi Picoult
Buy new: $10.88 / Used from: $0.01
All of Picoult's works blur the lines between good and bad in dealing with controversial issues, but the engaging characters make you forget about "the issues" and care about them as people more. All of Picoult's book are entertaining and thought-provoking.
At Home in MitfordAt Home in Mitford by Jan Karon
Buy used from: $0.02
I'm listing only the first of the Mitford series, but what this series lacks in literary "greatness" is more than compensated for by its characters and tranquil, small-town appeal. You can't help but become enraptured by Father Tim and all of the rest of the citizens of Mitford. Makes you long for simpler times.
The Chronicles of Narnia Boxed SetThe Chronicles of Narnia Boxed Set by C. S. Lewis
Buy new: $29.70 / Used from: $6.50
Nothing compares to the tales of Narnia. It's great for kids and perhaps even more wonderful to come back to as an adult.
And Then There Were NoneAnd Then There Were None by Agatha Christie
Buy new: $11.16 / Used from: $3.73
Any mystery lover would be remiss to ignore Christie's contribution to the genre, and this particular work is my favorite. Another lesser-known and now out-of-print book that is like it is "The Ninth Guest" by Gwen Bristow. My remaining copy is quite worn, despite the fact that I always know how it ends!
Life of PiLife of Pi by Yann Martel
Buy new: $10.20 / Used from: $0.01
More than just a story about a boy on a lifeboat with a tiger, though that is story enough. If you don't read this all the way to the end, you really miss the key to the whole novel.
West of Kabul, East of New York: An Afghan American StoryWest of Kabul, East of New York: An Afghan American Story by Tamim Ansary
Buy new: $10.08 / Used from: $0.99
An easy read that is a good perspective check for all Americans in this post 9/11 era.
The Waste Land and Other Poems: Including The Love Song of J. Alfred PrufrockThe Waste Land and Other Poems: Including The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock by T. S. Eliot
Buy new: $3.95 / Used from: $0.01
T.S. Eliot has to be considered one of the foremost literary influences of the 20th century. His poems were like a foreign language to me the first time I read them, but I have grown to love them.
Death of a Salesman (Penguin Plays)Death of a Salesman (Penguin Plays) by Arthur Miller
Buy new: $9.36 / Used from: $0.01
I hesitate to say that I enjoyed this play, as it is--in many ways--a modern tragedy. It's craftsmanship, just like Miller's "The Crucible," is masterful.
The Great GatsbyThe Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald
Buy new: $9.83 / Used from: $0.74
I can't say I enjoyed this novel the first time I read it, but it's one of those books that brings a new discovery each time I read it. The symbolism and the characters (however despicable they may be) are unforgettable. The Jazz Age at its decadent best.
A Raisin in the SunA Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry
Buy new: $7.00 / Used from: $0.01
I so much wish I had seen Phylicia Rashad in the Broadway production of this classic. This poignant play is packed with meaning.
Arcadia: A PlayArcadia: A Play by Tom Stoppard
Buy new: $10.08 / Used from: $0.99
This may be Tom Stoppard's best. Serious drama fans will find this absolutely captivating.
Different Seasons (Signet)Different Seasons (Signet) by Stephen King
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.01
I'm not a huge fan of true horror, but this collection of short stories displays King's talent for pure storytelling (not just supernatural chills). Contained in this particular selection are the stories that spawned the films "The Shawshank Redemption" and "Stand By Me."
Jurassic ParkJurassic Park by Michael Crichton
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.01
So much better than the movie. I was captivated by the book and its chaos theory when I read it, and then I found the movie highly disappointing. All of Chrichton's books are a great read for those who value factual scientific research as a basis for thrilling fiction.
Harry Potter Paperback Box Set (Books 1-6)Harry Potter Paperback Box Set (Books 1-6) by J.K. Rowling
Buy used from: $43.16
This is a no-brainer, but I just can't omit it.
Fallen AngelsFallen Angels by Walter Dean Myers
Buy used from: $0.01
Technically a Young Adult novel, but it really brought the Vietnam experience to life for me when I was in high school. I'm interested in reading it again, actually, and not too many books merit re-reads from me.
Ender's GameEnder's Game by Orson Scott Card
Buy new: $5.99 / Used from: $0.85
A fun, action-packed sci-fi read about a young boy-turned-savior-of-the-universe. Think Harry Potter in outer space.
Water for Elephants: A NovelWater for Elephants: A Novel by Sara Gruen
Buy new: $10.04 / Used from: $0.02
A unique novel that interweaves a 90-something-year-old narrator dealing with the dehumanization that society imposes on the aged with Depression-era circus life. Would make a great film, in my opinion.
The Glass Castle: A MemoirThe Glass Castle: A Memoir by Jeannette Walls
Buy new: $8.97 / Used from: $2.50
A transparent view of a poor, dysfunctional family from the perspective of the adult who watched it all fall apart as a child. I read it in one day--absolutely captivating.
The Miraculous Journey of Edward TulaneThe Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane by Kate DiCamillo
Buy new: $9.57 / Used from: $1.26
Yes, this is a children's book, but it's not like any children's book I've ever read. The illustrations alone make this worth picking up.
GhostwalkGhostwalk by Rebecca Stott
Buy new: $24.95 / Used from: $0.01
This is one of those novels that makes you think, "How did she come up with this idea?" Are the events surrounding the death of the narrator's mother supernatural or not?
An Instance of the Fingerpost: A NovelAn Instance of the Fingerpost: A Novel by Iain Pears
Buy new: $10.88 / Used from: $0.43
A sweeping historical novel told from the perspective of different narrators. Which of them is providing the most accurate version of the story?
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Book 7)Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Book 7) by J. K. Rowling
Buy new: $20.46 / Used from: $1.24
Just in case you thought I would leave out this one.
A Walk in the Woods: Rediscovering America on the Appalachian TrailA Walk in the Woods: Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail by Bill Bryson
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $3.91
Any book by Bryson could go here, as his travel writing is entertaining and enlightening at the same time.
