Cry, the Beloved Country (Oprah's Book Club)Cry, the Beloved Country (Oprah's Book Club) by Alan Paton
Buy new: $10.20 / Used from: $0.01
My favorite book of all time. I buy it whenever I see used first editions in bookstores. I have the autographed copy, old library copies, I am a hoarder of this book. Quite possibly the most beautiful prose I have ever read in my life. I know it sounds snobby, but I was really annoyed when Oprah picked it because I didn't want the wrong kinds of people getting their hands on MY book.
Mother to Mother (Bluestreak)Mother to Mother (Bluestreak) by Sindiwe Magona
Buy new: $10.92 / Used from: $0.67
This book is stunning. It really makes you think about who has the right to tell someone's story. The book is based upon a true story and is heartbraking and beautiful like most South African literature.
Mandela: The Authorized PortraitMandela: The Authorized Portrait by PQ Publishers Ltd.
Buy new: $31.50 / Used from: $4.30
Such a big beautiful book. I got it for Christmas and just looking at it makes me super happy.
Mating BirdsMating Birds by Lewis Nkosi
Buy used from: $2.37
This book is short but the message is powerful. I think I really am attached to the whole theme of the silenced South African and those who are able to tell a story.
Foe: A Novel (King Penguin)Foe: A Novel (King Penguin) by J. M. Coetzee
Buy new: $10.08 / Used from: $0.97
Coetzee is not an easy read. This novel is one of his more easily read though. It is not nearly as dark as Disgrace or as my one friend described it, a quagmire. Coetzee plays with the role of the author and originality to take the opportunity to retell the story of Robinson Crusoe. When Coetzee gave his Nobel lecture in 2003 he took on the persona of Robinson Crusoe to do so.
I Write What I Like: Selected WritingsI Write What I Like: Selected Writings by Steve Biko
Buy new: $15.30 / Used from: $6.00
I think seeing the movie Cry Freedom really changed me when I was growing up. This collection of the writings of Steve Biko are beautiful because you can really see how badly he wanted what we was working for.
A Dry White SeasonA Dry White Season by Andre Brink
Buy new: $11.96 / Used from: $3.95
Bleak in the same kind of way that Coetzee's Disgrace is. Although this book is depressing and dense, there really is no way to convey this same message otherwise.
No Future Without ForgivenessNo Future Without Forgiveness by Desmond Tutu
Buy new: $10.85 / Used from: $4.71
I am a 9th grade teacher and I think my students would do well to know this book. I had the privilege of taking a class taught by Archbishop Tutu and it truly was to be in the presence of greatness.
Bitter Fruit: A NovelBitter Fruit: A Novel by Achmat Dangor
Buy new: $11.05 / Used from: $0.30
This book took way too long to be published in America. Interesting to see the kind of non idealistic way the TRC impacted South Africans. Not the easiest read, but the great ones rarely are.
July's PeopleJuly's People by Nadine Gordimer
Buy new: $10.08 / Used from: $0.01
Gordimer is never a really easy read, but this book really makes you think.
The Power of One: A NovelThe Power of One: A Novel by Bryce Courtenay
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $1.49
So different from the movie! The differences between this novel and its film remind me of the differences between Forrest Gump--the novel and the film. The film is beautiful and packs quite a punch, but there is quirkiness in the novel that you miss in the film. I love both the book and the movie, but for entirely different reasons.
Long Walk to Freedom: The Autobiography of Nelson MandelaLong Walk to Freedom: The Autobiography of Nelson Mandela by Nelson Mandela
Buy new: $12.23 / Used from: $1.57
Another great book I wish I could get my students to read. Some say Mandela deserved to be imprisoned for being a revolutionary...
The Mind of South AfricaThe Mind of South Africa by Allister Sparks
Buy used from: $6.50
A good yet old history book on South Africa. I learned much from my reading of it.
Biko - Cry FreedomBiko - Cry Freedom by Donald Woods
Buy used from: $1.36
Sad and thought provoking. Biko's story is only one of thousands we don't get to hear.
The Good Doctor: A NovelThe Good Doctor: A Novel by Damon Galgut
Buy new: $10.20 / Used from: $3.45
I had a really hard time getting into this book, but the second time i picked it up was different. It doesn't really move the earth like others on this list do for me, but I liked it enough to include it.
