![]() | The Unbearable Lightness of Being (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $8.66 / Used from: $10.48 There is nothing I didn't like about this movie - it is dark, complex, sexual, layered, a real treat. Beautifully directed and acted, a must-see for any serious movie fan. Based on the novel by Milan Kundera.
![]() | A Tale of Two Cities (1935)
Buy new: $16.49 / Used from: $9.70 One of the most brilliant novels ever written, by Charles Dickens, the movie version with Ronald Colman is terrific.
![]() | The Heiress (Universal Cinema Classics)
Buy new: $11.49 / Used from: $7.99 If for no other reason, watching Olivia de Havilland go from milquetoast (think of her in Gone With the Wind) to a cold, ruthless woman is worth watching this one. But strong performances by the rest of the cast, including Montgomery Clift and Sir Ralph Richardson, loathsome as the disdainful father, only enhance the movie. Based on Henry James' 1881 story 'Washington Square.'
![]() | Monsieur Verdoux
Buy used from: $6.98 Many of the earlier, silent Chaplin films are brilliant but this one remains my favorite. He is superb as a man who marries women, then kills them for their fortunes. William Frawley from 'I Love Lucy' is funny in a supporting role.
![]() | The Station Agent
Buy new: $17.49 / Used from: $5.62 A gem! Peter Dinklage is a train enthusiast who inherits an old depot in New Jersey and moves in. He meets an unusual group of people, including characters played by Patricia Clarkson and Bobby Cannavale. The performances are great. I love this movie so much I once spent a beautiful summer day driving around Morristown, where it was filmed, looking for Finn. Sadly, I didn't find him.
![]() | Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $8.66 / Used from: $8.49 I once attended a lecture given by Edward Albee, who remains my favorite playwright, and he said he didn't like the way this movie came out. I can't help it, I love this movie, it was the first version I ever saw of 'Who's Afraid of V.W.' after reading the play, and in my mind, Elizabeth Taylor will always be Martha, and Richard Burton will always be George.
![]() | To Sir, With Love
Buy used from: $40.72 I'm a teacher, and I think this is the best movie ever made about us. Oddly enough, I can not find 'Up the Down Staircase' here on Amazon but that's my second favorite teacher movie.
![]() | Swimming Pool (Unrated Version)
Buy new: $7.49 / Used from: $1.52 Charlotte Rampling is wonderful in this strange little movie. You can not be quite sure, the first time you see it, where it is headed but are undoubtedly surprised when you get there.
![]() | Taking of Pelham One Two Three
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $8.49 Perhaps it is because I love New York, or because I've always had a thing for the late, brilliant actor Robert Shaw, or just because it is so very suspenseful, but I love this movie. Be sure to see the complete, unedited one, not the one usually shown on television.
![]() | Crimes and Misdemeanors
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $5.45 It is difficult to choose a favorite among Woody Allen's films but this, for me, is probably the one. Beautifully written, it examines love, death, obsession, murder, suicide, faith, egotism, heartbreak. A wonderful, wonderful movie.
![]() | Another Woman
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $2.24 And this is my second favorite Allen film. Don't expect to laugh because it isn't funny, but Gena Rowlands is amazing, and how Allen can write so convincingly about a woman and how she feels, thinks, loves, works, so intimately, is a mystery to me.
![]() | Lost in Translation
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $0.52 Perhaps it is because I have been so happily married since 1999 to a wonderful man 21 years my senior that I love this movie, perhaps it is not. But I do. Bill Murray's best!
![]() | The Triplets of Belleville
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $4.50 My favorite full length animated movie. From France, this film is all about a young man who lives with his grandmother and his dog, who enters the Tour de France, as bicycling is his passion, and is kidnapped. Grandma and son chien (his dog) come to Paris to rescue him, and are aided by the famous Triplets of Belleville! A lovely, heartwarming, visually exciting treat!
![]() | The Crying Game (Collector's Edition)
Buy used from: $5.89 I don't usually consider love stories to be my favorite kinds of movies, but this one is an unconventional love story, to put it mildly, and a terrific film.
![]() | Rebecca [VHS]
Buy used from: $0.44 I couldn't find this one on DVD??? Anyway, based on the novel by Daphne Du Maurier, a great movie, lots of layers, suspense, and a few twists thrown in. Dark and moody like the movie, Laurence Olivier is perfect and Joan Fontaine is as well as the character without a name. One of Hitchcock's best movies.
![]() | American Beauty (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $0.43 Annette Bening and Kevin Spacey are terrific in a wonderful movie that has something to say about a lot, including love, lust, materialism, prejudice and faith.
![]() | The Graduate
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $5.75 Great movie, one of the best performances by all involved, Dustin Hoffman, Anne Bancroft, Murray Hamilton, Katherine Ross.
![]() | The Silence of the Lambs (Full Screen Edition)
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $1.98 My favorite scary movie. Anthony Hopkins and Jodie Foster are great. If you have the stomach for it, the best one to watch late at night with the lights out. Based on the Thomas Harris bestseller.
![]() | The Sting
Buy used from: $13.82 My aforementioned comments on Robert Shaw, plus Paul Newman, Robert Redford, there are so many reasons to love this movie, but they are the first three.
![]() | E.T. - The Extra-Terrestrial (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $16.49 / Used from: $8.00 The best science fiction movie ever! How could you not love this one?
![]() | Jaws (30th Anniversary Edition)
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $4.92 The best summer movie ever made. And, oh yes, Robert Shaw is in it. Based on Peter Benchley's novel, which, of course, is based on the classic Melville novel Moby Dick.
![]() | The Lives of Others
Buy new: $14.94 / Used from: $4.05 A lonely man, played by actor Ulrich Muhe, who spies on others in East Germany in 1984 is the protagonist of this movie. He is a member of the Stasi, East Germany's police, and his life is changed when he is assigned to watch a playwright suspected of anti-government activities and his actress girlfriend. This political thriller is terrific, and the ending is great!
![]() | Friendly Persuasion
Buy new: $17.49 / Used from: $14.78 A great movie about Quakers and their commitment to pacifism during the Civil War. Dorothy McGuire, Gary Cooper and especially Anthony Perkins are excellent. Based on a novel by Jessamyn West.
![]() | Network (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $8.66 / Used from: $11.50 A study of the vicious nature of some people and just how cruel and cold the world can be. This movie focuses on network television; the same people can be found in a lot of other professions. Interestingly, there is not one character in the movie with whom you would want to be on a deserted island.
![]() | Face/Off [Region 2]
Buy used from: $6.87 This genre is not one I look for when perusing the movie listings. However, I do like some action films, and this is my favorite. This is a serious character study. We get to see John Travolta and Nicholas Cage switch characters, and not only does each actor adopt the traits, quirks and body language of the other character, they each adopt those of the other ACTOR.
![]() | The Godfather (Widescreen Edition)
Buy used from: $3.50 The best mob movie ever made. And the sequel is as good as this, which is rare. Just remember: there are only two Godfather movies. Only two!
![]() | Casino (Widescreen 10th Anniversary Edition)
Buy new: $15.99 / Used from: $2.75 Counting Godfathers I and II as the best mob movies ever made, this one would be the second best ever made.
![]() | A Christmas Carol (Original B&W Version)
Buy used from: $39.75 The best Christmas movie ever made, based on the story by Charles Dickens. There have been a lot of versions of it produced but my favorite is the one starring Alistair Sim.
![]() | Its a Wonderful Life 45th Anniversary [VHS]
Buy used from: $0.01 The second best Christmas movie ever made. I've watched this every Christmas for at least the last ten years and I still get tears in my eyes at the ending, as does my husband, which is really saying something!
![]() | Miracle on 34th Street (Special Edition)
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $7.99 Finally, my third favorite Christmas movie. And William Frawley is in this one, too.
