An incredible movie and the most definitive version of a film mercilessly hacked by Hollywood hacks who could not understand or appreciate Fritz Lang's awesome vision. HG Wells at the time described this film as one of the "silliest" he had ever seen, which says more about him than the film! Anyone who claims to have any interest in cinema at all must see "Metropolis".

Louise Brooks - the most radiant woman to grace the screen - ever! (Silently or otherwise!) Too free-spirited for studio-ridden Hollywood but made her name in Germany. This is her piece de resistance. Superb realistic direction from Pabst.

Mythology / fantasy epic that is simply resplendent with iconic imagery all ingeniously achieved without mindless CGI
Diary of a Lost GirlDiary of a Lost Girl

Not as iconic as "Pandora's Box" but still a wonderful example of the beauty (and the tragedy) of the enigma that was Louise Brooks.

Max Schreck (what a name!) plays the titular vampire and, even to this day, is one of the most idiosyncratic and otherworldy performances of the Count ever. Some of the most iconic images of cinema are in this film. Murnau's directorial vision is remarkable in many sequences.

Extraordinary British film that explores the nightclub scene of the 1920s. Anna May Wong (who never achieved anything like the Hollywood success she should of by virtue of the rascism of the era which relegated all people of Asian heritage to playing often derrogatory stereotypes) is riveting.

When I first saw this as a boy on TV I was spellbound! It still holds true and the opening montage of assasination and political intrigue is pure genius! Many striking sequences in this film - especially those involving the seduction and suicide of the Japanese attache. Also the train crash is breathtaking for its use of first person perspective. More Fritz Lang during his golden era.

Wonderful insight into Weimar Germany's obsessions and excesses. A bit overblown in some parts but a fascinating vision of that chaotic era. Stars Rudolf Klein-Rogge from "Metropolis" and is directed by the maestro Fritz Lang.

A film very much of two halves but, for me, it is the much darker toned first half that makes this film remarkable. The story of a simple man who plans to kill his wife for his new lover is visualized with some remarkable mise en scene. For me the only truely brilliant film to come out of Hollywood at this time.

Certainly still a must see for anyone interested in Silent Cinema! Probably noted more for its remarkable visuals that evoke Expressionist art than for audacity of plot; its bookend structure, however, does pose some interesting questions for the intelligent viewer.

A lesser known melodrama of the silent era but gives an interesting glimpse into the preoccupations of the 1920s.

Quite a remarkable film from Weimar Germany, that is quite visually stunning in the opening half with its realistic portrayal of civil war Russia before the communists fully secured power. A bit of a melodrama in the second half but well worth the viewing for Pabst's genius weaving gold from a rather trite storyline.

Any fan of silent cinema needs to see this! Made in 2005 (yes, 2005!) this is a terrific homage not only to the voiceless electric shadows of a bygone time, but a faithful and entertaining version of HP Lovecraft's seminal work. Watch this and be enthralled! Crafted by genuine enthusiasts.
