Some Favorite Nineties Hong Kong Movies
By an Amazon.com customer
Hard Boiled (Two-Disc Ultimate Edition)Hard Boiled (Two-Disc Ultimate Edition)
Buy new: $10.49 / Used from: $1.96
For gun battle action, this may never be topped. Director John Woo went to Hollywood after this to make inferior films.
Chungking ExpressChungking Express
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $3.41
My favorite Wong Kar Wai film. Humor and high energy applied to a melancholy tale. Faye Wong is irresistible. The Criterion DVD has better picture quality than this one and leaves the music track alone, allowing Faye Wong to dance to her own recording (a cover of "Dreams.")
The Heroic TrioThe Heroic Trio
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $4.49
A nifty superhero movie. Drops off in the last section, becoming weighty. The sequel, Executioners, is a disappointment, upping the oppressive level.
Green SnakeGreen Snake
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $8.07
This is one of my favorite fantasy films. They don't make them like this in Hollywood.
SupercopSupercop
Buy used from: $1.72
My favorite Jackie Chan movie. It's his one film with Michelle Yeoh.
Fist of LegendFist of Legend
Buy new: $14.49 / Used from: $7.54
Remake of a Bruce Lee film. Some of the finest martial arts action every put on film. Jet Li.
Swordsman IISwordsman II
Buy used from: $8.44
Wild and weird action fantasy with Brigitte Lin and Jet Li. A classic. Swordsman I is weak. Third one, East is Red, isn't bad. The Legend of the Swordsman is an edited and dubbed version of this.
God of CookeryGod of Cookery
Buy used from: $39.99
Stephen Chow is the God of action-comedy. His Shaolin Soccer and Kung Fu Hustle are even better, perhaps. Not bad title.
In the Mood for Love - Criterion CollectionIn the Mood for Love - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $32.49 / Used from: $22.67
Probably considered Wong Kar Wai's finest film. It might also be the best romantic film of the decade.
A Moment of RomanceA Moment of Romance
Buy used from: $18.93
This good-girl, bad-boy romance tale is not original. But it works like a charm. It has one of my favorite downbeat endings. Andy Lau and Wu Chien-lien star
Once Upon a Time in China #1Once Upon a Time in China #1
Buy new: $8.49 / Used from: $1.60
This made Jet Li a star. I'd say the second one is just as good. The third one is weak.
Comrades - Almost a Love StoryComrades - Almost a Love Story
Maggie Cheung, who's in a couple of other movies on this list, and Leon Lai star in this very good romantic film. I loved the strange ending. Late in the film there's a scene shot in on of the World Trade Center towers.
Rouge (Limited Remastered DTS Edition) DVDRouge (Limited Remastered DTS Edition) DVD
A fine ghostly romance film. Star Anita Mui, the ghost, is unfortunately no longer with us for real, a victim of cancer.
Inner Senses (Special Edition)Inner Senses (Special Edition)
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $1.66
I really liked this one. A spooky tale staring the late, great Leslie Cheung in his last film. Even spookier is how the ending parallels his own suicide.
Naked KillerNaked Killer
Buy new: $9.98 / Used from: $2.12
One of the most entertaining exploitation movies I've ever seen.
Robotrix (Remastered & Uncut Edition) DVDRobotrix (Remastered & Uncut Edition) DVD
Another superior Category III (graphic sex & violence) film. Great action, beautiful women, and cyborgs (who are often beautiful women.)
The Phantom LoverThe Phantom Lover
Buy used from: $4.04
Lavishly produced love story that blends The Phantom of the Opera with, I believe, the story of a real-life architect. Very romantic. Leslie Cheung and Wu Chien-lien star.
In the Line of Duty V: Middle ManIn the Line of Duty V: Middle Man
Buy used from: $129.94
Great action series staring the fabulous Cynthia Khan, who replaced Michelle Yeoh early in the series.
The CatThe Cat
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $9.15
Not highly regarded, but it's one of my favorite Hong Kong action-horror films. But then I'm a sucker for giant alien blob monsters. One shows up here for the climax.
Butterfly Sword (Special Edition)Butterfly Sword (Special Edition)
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $4.48
Michelle Yeoh was flying and swishing a sword years before Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Someone wields a toppled stone pillar as a weapon in this one. Just plain fun.
Zen of SwordZen of Sword
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $9.79
Cynthia Khan in a rare period roll, and with a sword. I believe they hurl trees in this one.
The MissionThe Mission
Buy new: $26.99 / Used from: $11.94
From highly regarded director Johnny To. Relatively sedate. The tableau-style shootout is very cool.
The Legend of Drunken MasterThe Legend of Drunken Master
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $2.00
Jakie Chan's sequel to his breakout hit is one of his best films, despite the stupid ending.
Dragon Chronicles - The Maidens of Heavenly MountainsDragon Chronicles - The Maidens of Heavenly Mountains
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $10.04
One of a couple of Hong Kong action movies Gong Li appeared in. Some people hate it. Not me. Set in a fantastic world that bares little or no resemblance to the real Earth.
Beyond HypothermiaBeyond Hypothermia
Buy new: $9.98 / Used from: $0.99
Wu Chien-lien, maybe my favorite HK actress, plays an assassin who's body temperature is a bit low. Neat title.
Okinawa Rendez-VousOkinawa Rendez-Vous
Buy used from: $16.79
Faye Wong and Leslie Cheung in a lighthearted tale of love and robbery in the sun.
Running Out of TimeRunning Out of Time
Buy new: $26.99 / Used from: $7.19
Chase movie with a terminally ill master-thief leaving clues for the policeman on his trail. Directed by Johnny To. The sequel is not as good.
The Odd One DiesThe Odd One Dies
Buy used from: $495.95
Quirky story of a young guy who hires a young gal to perform the hit he was hired to do.
Saviour of the SoulSaviour of the Soul
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $2.70
Very stylish and a bit different. It's set in a modern world, but swords are the preferred weapon, like in the Kill Bill films. Nifty title.
The Moon WarriorsThe Moon Warriors
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $6.49
Classy flying swordsman film. Andy Lau rides a dolphin.
Magic Crane/Rivals of the DragonMagic Crane/Rivals of the Dragon
Buy used from: $1.66
Magic Crane is another fantasy I liked. Anita Mui rides a giant crane (bird, not heavy machinery.)
Red to KillRed to Kill
Buy used from: $41.75
Here is probably the nastiest Category III film I've seen. You really care about the heroine, though.
Sex and ZenSex and Zen
Buy new: $26.99
Lots of sex. I don't know about the Zen. The ladies are lovely.
Iron MonkeyIron Monkey
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $2.21
Amazing action scenes. Too bad the story is dull.
Blade of FuryBlade of Fury
Buy used from: $30.99
Cynthia Khan with a sword again.
Duel to the DeathDuel to the Death
Buy new: $29.95 / Used from: $14.55
A disappointing climax, rare in Hong Kong action films, but otherwise fine.
Full ThrottleFull Throttle
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $11.50
Motorcycle street racing with Andy Lau.
Painted SkinPainted Skin
Buy used from: $24.90
The first half, an unusual ghost story, is better than the more action oriented second half.
The Legend of SpeedThe Legend of Speed
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $6.98
Street racing. Picks up in the second half. Great title.
Erotic Ghost StoryErotic Ghost Story
Better than the second one. Haven't seen the third. I liked the fight near the end with the gals in colorful outfits shooting colorful energy bolts from their hands.
