1965. Jobim began his tour across America in New York, studying seagulls on a friend's balcony and asking what is their name in English, not too long after, he'd be living in California, playing host, dining with fellow artist, and recruiting South American and Cuban musicians for record sessions. 1967. Jobim had already recorded the album Wave in America, and sitting in his favorite club back home in Rio when Frank Sinatra got him on the phone and told Jobim it was to time to come back and do an album with him. Recording sessions drenched in cigarette smoke.

1970. After living in California and being wined and dined by Hollywood royalty, I think Jobim was getting homesick for Rio, throughout his life Jobim would own a number of properties in and around Rio, I look at the album Tide as a sort of homecoming, features Hermeto Pascoal and Airto.
