Slumdog Millionaire [Theatrical Release]Slumdog Millionaire [Theatrical Release]
The direction is brilliant, the story is profound and reaffirming. Through the cacophony and scars of life, hope and love remain strong. Friends can save each other like musketeers. And everything happens for a reason. It made me ridiculously happy.
The Dark Knight [Theatrical Release]The Dark Knight [Theatrical Release]
Gut-wrenching, heart-wrenching, this movie transcends its genre. An incredibly thoughtful treatise on good and evil, the gray areas in between and the sacrifices and compromises noble souls have to live with in the fight against ruthless darkness.

"Who are these guys?" Well, there's Paul Newman, the white Sidney Poitier, class defined, delivering every line perfectly and Robert Redford, almost doing the impossible by just about out-cooling Newman. Who'd have thought a movie about two guys running away would be so perfect. Thanks to the bond between these two legends, it is.

Dang. This is just awesome. I watch this even when my kids aren't around. The songs are so darn catchy and the animation is sheer originality. Cake-addicted sevens? That's genius. It's all genius.

How good it feels to extend a helping hand and get swept up into the beat. How alive! The pace of this movie is very slow, but it let's you feel the awkwardness and hesitation. We are so blest to be born in this country. When did we are an immigrant people?

"Let my love open your heart." An earnest movie with amazing music. Reminded me of classic Hepburn/Grant romantic comedies. Near perfect, if only they had not thrown in a few of the moments. Dane Cook annoys me so much, which worked quite well here.
Iron Man (Ultimate Two-Disc Edition + BD Live) [Blu-ray]Iron Man (Ultimate Two-Disc Edition + BD Live) [Blu-ray]

It was a good summer for superhero movies, ay? This one is just cool. Thoroughly enjoyable, but not very deep. Metallic cotton candy.
The Sting (Universal Legacy Series)The Sting (Universal Legacy Series)
Buy new: $22.49 / Used from: $12.46
I am in the minority that the Newman/Redford brotherly connection in Butch Cassidy makes it the better movie. I will agree that George Roy Hill is a very underappreciated director. Another classic movie. I couldn't believe how even on the second viewing, they were still able to mislead me several times. Matchstick Men and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels say "thank you" to The Sting.
Gone Baby GoneGone Baby Gone by Casey Affleck
Buy new: $18.99 / Used from: $1.45
First thought: I love Amy Ryan. She's mad genius and I will rent anything with her in it. Second thought: Who'd have thought Ben Affleck was capable of such a thoughtful, provocative film? Third thought (pointed out by my wife)-Why doesn't the uncle just report her to Social Services and they raise the kid. That's a pretty big plot hole that renders the rest of the movie moot.

A quirky, original and lovable creation. Poop jokes never stop being funny. The directors smartly never betray the heart of Kenny for a cheap laugh.
Romancing the StoneRomancing the Stone

It has all the elements of a perfect movie but falls just short of greatness. Still, lots of nostalgia value and certainly in Zemeckis' top 5 best movies.
The Kite RunnerThe Kite Runner
Buy new: $17.49 / Used from: $1.54
I admire that the director let the story be the compelling force of the film and cast ethnic actors that skillfully brought catharsis to this cultural saga of redemption. The perfect pacing the book achieves is off and CGI kites couldn't be more fake, but still a noble effort.

Meryl Streep's children and grandchildren will be able to watch this performance, one of the most total inhabitations of a character's skin ever, and be proud. The rest of us can just watch in amazement.

Is there anyone who hasn't wanted a Mini Cooper after seeing this? Like the car, the movie itself is sleek, distinct and a fun ride.
Hot Fuzz (Widescreen Edition)Hot Fuzz (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $1.50
What a grand final 30 minutes it is. You will really need some ice cream. The Fuzz-O-Meter on the bonus features also is quite entertaining, revealing an abundance of references to other action flicks.

When Sarah Palin was announced as VP nominee, this is what I thought of. What's not to like about this charming and optimistic little movie? You've got the versatile Kevin Kline, the lovely and shockingly still without an Oscar Sigourney Weaver, Ving Rhames with hair and Bonnie Hunt making us laugh for the entire 90 seconds she's on film.
In the Heat of the NightIn the Heat of the Night

Good movies about race point out the prejudices we all harbor-this was a brave choice for Jewison and Poitier. I think this movie holds up well, it is also a good representative movie for that decade.
Serenity (Widescreen Edition)Serenity (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $3.79
Way to go for getting closure for a very unique series. But...the plot is more than just a little iffy when it comes to morality and no kiss for Mal and Inara? Criminal.
The Lives of OthersThe Lives of Others
Buy new: $14.94 / Used from: $4.69
Another small interesting German tale. Neighbors turn against neighbor and lovers turn into informants, while an unlikely guardian leaves a fingerprint on the life of his unsuspecting ward.
Batman Begins (Two-Disc Special Edition)Batman Begins (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $15.99 / Used from: $4.83
I appreciated it more the second time around when you can look at it as a successful exposition. Still, just an average superhero film and a below average bow from the talented Mr. Nolan. And the bonus features just might be more interesting than the film itself
CocoonCocoon

The movie has some weak points (cough cough stevegutenberg cough), but love me some Jessica Tandy. Why don't they make more movies like this, that give actors who have honed their craft to perfection a chance to amaze us?
White ChristmasWhite Christmas

Definitely shows its age. There are some super cheesy moments, some bizarre dance numbers, and a disturbing display of anorexia. But when the general walks in and all his troops sing for him...oh, i'm such a softie.
The Bourne Ultimatum (Widescreen Edition)The Bourne Ultimatum (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $1.69
Honestly, my favorite part was when the credits rolled with Moby's synergetic "Extreme Days." There is a lot of rough and tumble action-which is all very cool-but there is no true heart to this movie and no real message to be gained from the twisty plot other than, "Watch out for the corrupt people in power." Ohhhh...profound.
It Could Happen to YouIt Could Happen to You
Buy new: $9.49 / Used from: $3.38
When I was younger, this movie seemed really charming, but now, it just seems very naive that two married people would just spend so much time together. And then you find out the real-life cop and waitress stayed happily married to their respective spouses. Kind of a romantic slap in the face.
Be Kind RewindBe Kind Rewind

Sigourney Weaver is following us. This is the fourth movie in a month that she has popped up in. As for the movie itself, it has heart, but it also has a helping of relativism (It's our history! We can change it!-bleh) It has funny zany Jack Black and annoying zany Jack Black. It is inventive, but 90 percent of the inventiveness was revealed in the trailer.
Get Smart (Single-Disc Widescreen Edition)Get Smart (Single-Disc Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $9.49 / Used from: $1.23
Who were they trying to make a movie for? There is broad childish humor and totally kid-inappropriate adult jokes. This is a sorry attempt to target all audiences, and ultimately makes a film that appeals to no one. It's one redeeming factor is the charm of the cast.
American Gangster (2-Disc Unrated Extended Edition)American Gangster (2-Disc Unrated Extended Edition)
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $1.99
A charismatic monster is still a monster. It doesn't matter how many people remain silent. It doesn't matter if you like him and want to have a drink with him. Interesting story but hated the coda of this movie.
Baby MamaBaby Mama
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $1.45
I just expect more from Tina Fey. It made me laugh a few times, but the average episode of 30 Rock does more. Add to that, the way they trivialize conception and child birth (very similar to the cavalier attitude Juno takes) and well, I just didn't care for it.
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (Single Disc)Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (Single Disc)
Buy new: $15.99 / Used from: $2.18
Spielberg sure does like aliens. I know Indiana Jones is supposed to be a tribute to Saturday afternoon cinema serials, but this is just too much. Too much luckily surviving, barely missing, just happening to stumble across the solution.
Tropic ThunderTropic Thunder
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $1.99
There was just so much seriously vulgar humor that afterwards, I found myself saying, "I know there were some really funny lines in there, but I can't remember any of them now." Tom Cruise: not funny.
The Diving Bell and the ButterflyThe Diving Bell and the Butterfly
Buy new: $17.49 / Used from: $2.28
Wow. This is like the stereotype of a dense foreign film with voiceover and "innovative" angles and plodding plot and whimsical imagery.
Across the Universe (Two-Disc Special Edition)Across the Universe (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy used from: $2.95
I can't imagine being in the theatre, thinking you were going to see a love story to the soundtrack of the Beatles, and instead seeing Mr. Kite, 6 painted Vietnamese women and a gyrating priest. Our emotional connection to these characters (who are all searching for peace in empty arms) has to be conjured just because we're told they're important.

Well...the trailer was great.
Death at a FuneralDeath at a Funeral
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $4.07
Man. This is just not a good movie. There are a few amusing parts (thank you, Alan Tudyk), but the main conflict of the movie is very immoral, the central characters are grating, and the conclusion is extremely smaltzy. Not sure what they were trying for, but the result is a very unfunny, sappy mess where you are left with the painful realization of what a waste of 2 hours that was.
There Will Be BloodThere Will Be Blood
Buy new: $17.49 / Used from: $2.15
Everything was just TOO. MUCH. Especially the grandiose acting and the claustrophobic score that was so invasive I couldn't even think. That ending was wretched, and I'm not talking about the blood. "There will be blasphemy." Dark movies like this have to have an emotional heart; (think Ellen Burstyn in Requiem) this movie just had a gaping void left where the two men had sold their souls.
