Electric ArgumentsElectric Arguments by The Fireman and Youth Paul McCartney
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $5.32
Amazing album. The best of the year—yes, even better than Kanye's latest masterpiece. It goes more places than a 65 years old may have to, specially being Paul McCartney. And yet, being McCartney is exactly what made this gem happened.
808s & Heartbreak808s & Heartbreak by Kanye West
Buy new: $10.97 / Used from: $3.68
Once again, Kanye makes a perfect album. Sensual, moving, making every beat tell its story. This is good music by any standards. Kanye grows and the music says what it has to say.
Shake AwayShake Away by Lila Downs
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $7.25
Lila has been putting out great albums from the beginning. In many ways, this is a culmination of what she has pursued all along, Mexican traditional music in dialogue with Rock and Rap ... and more. Extraordinary "world" music.
Dear ScienceDear Science by TV on the Radio
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $6.18
Possibly, their best so far. As much as Cookie Mountain was a remarkable album, I think that Dear Science covers that territory and ventures further. The good news is who says you have to choose one over the other. More great music from Brooklyn, NY.
Friend for LifeFriend for Life by Ersi Arvizu
Buy new: $17.98 / Used from: $0.01
Arvizu may just be the most authentic voice you'll hear all year. The album grooves and cries in just the most appropriate places. Praise her voice and heart, and thank Ry Cooder for producing.
Gossip In The GrainGossip In The Grain by Ray LaMontagne
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $11.35
If there was any need for proof that Trouble was not a fluke, this album makes it clear. The Astral Weeks vibe of his debut is here too, yet production and songwriting have matured. Track 2 is absolutely gorgeous.
Ana HinaAna Hina by Natacha Atlas & the Mazeeka Ensemble
Buy new: $19.98 / Used from: $6.39
Natacha has been around quite a while. After collaborations with Peter Gabriel and experiments with Electronica, she has chosen to go back to his Middle-Eastern roots and put out an album's worth of great songs (ainly famous ones from the 50's) honoring her roots.
Every DayEvery Day by The Cinematic Orchestra
Buy used from: $6.78
Not big on live albums, really, except once in a while when a band give their great songs, and they bring something else to the proceedings than phoning it in, studio-style. Breathe, track 7, alone makes this something took into. Really.
The Mande VariationsThe Mande Variations by Toumani Diabate
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $9.95
A Diabate album is always a strong candidate for the best of its year. This one is nothing less than a reunion of old spirits, and many have come. Gorgeous.
Nova SérieNova Série by O Rappa
Buy new: $25.98 / Used from: $66.57
The album that counts is 7 Vezes, their new release. Go find it, and buy it. They are Brazilian Reggae/Rock band and they are excellent. Followers of Franti/Spearhead are bound to love it.
CardinologyCardinology by Ryan Adams & the Cardinals
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $4.84
That Ryan Adam is as talented as prolific is no big news. What's worth saying is that Cardinology is one of his strongest albums in along time. Definitely, among the best has given us.
L' AfricainL' Africain by Tiken Jah Fakoly
Buy new: $51.99 / Used from: $60.47
Fakoly's Reggae has no equals. This is as much Marley as it is the soul of Africa itself. You must know this man.
WamatoWamato by Les Amazones de Guinée
Buy new: $20.99 / Used from: $16.01
A band formed a long time ago from female members of the Guinean army. I don't know what that may conjure up for you but the music is stunning. This platoon knows how to attack a groove.
Working Man's CafeWorking Man's Cafe by Ray Davies
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $8.99
Davies' new solo album picks up where Other People's Lives left off. Davies writes like few of his (or any!) generation do. Healthy skepticism for messed up times.
WAS NOT WAS - BOOWAS NOT WAS - BOO
Buy used from: $2.87
Although it's not up there with What Up Dog or Are You OK, the Was brothers can still write and play some mean tunes, the Funk and some ballads here still deserve being paid attention to. Key to the worth of this album is the voice of Sweet Pea Atkinson and the apparently strabnge choices for guest vocalists, This time is Kris Kristoferson.
Just A Little Lovin'Just A Little Lovin' by Shelby Lynne
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $4.93
A beautiful album all the way through. Lynne's pipes are resilient and ever so mature. Not easy to squeeze new tugs at the heart from classics like these.
Mar DulceMar Dulce by Bajofondo
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $6.98
For me this may be Bajofondo's best album so far. Gems abound (Cristal, Hoy, Costello's piece) and Buenos Aires sears itself in your mind.
