![]() | Infernal Affairs (Wu jian dao)
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $2.77 (B+) Very tightly plotted and intriguing, though Scorsese's remake easily outdoes it by adding in more character/humor and other things.
![]() | Colossus - The Forbin Project
Buy used from: $28.90 (B-) I enjoy evil-omnipotent computer stories, and this one is pretty well done.
![]() | Bringing Out the Dead
Buy new: $9.98 / Used from: $2.13 (B) Good visuals, acting and some interesting characters almost make up for this movie's not really going anywhere in particular.
![]() | Zombie
Buy new: $15.99 / Used from: $7.98 (B) Not quite as much fun as horror connoisseurs will tell you it is, but still a good watch.
![]() | Gangs of New York (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $1.96 (B-) A ton of time of talent and effort went into what is ultimately a very average, run of the mill script. Solid overall, but far from great.
![]() | Run Lola Run
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $3.88 (B+) Fun, clever high-concept film. It occasionally goes overboard with the hyper-kinetic style, but it at least has a purpose here.
![]() | City Of The Living Dead
Buy used from: $6.33 (B-) Best known for it's gore/camp quotient, but I think it's got some conventional positives too, like the excellent, if derivative score and strong atmosphere.
![]() | Slither (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $11.49 / Used from: $0.41 (B+) One of those rare horror-comedies that doesn't turn into a total farce, so it at least maintains some drama, if not true horror. Anyway, nice gore, pretty funny etc.
![]() | Demon Seed
Buy used from: $3.50 (B) An evil supercomputer decides to get it on with Julie Christie and her sexy English accent. 'Nuff said.
![]() | The Aviator (Two-Disc Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $9.49 / Used from: $0.01 (B) Formulaic Oscar-bait from Scorsese, but well done. Blanchett is as annoying as all hell, though. Perhaps Hepburn really was that irritating, I dunno.
![]() | They Came Back
Buy new: $11.49 / Used from: $2.49 (B-) This time the dead return but are mostly just despondent and weird. Not much actually happens, but it has some good ideas and a nice general eeriness.
![]() | Riki-Oh - The Story of Ricky
Buy new: $18.49 / Used from: $15.92 (B+) Rationally terrible but also awesome gorefest. I've never seen anything else quite like it.
![]() | Tae Guk Gi - The Brotherhood of War
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $4.02 (B) Generic modern war movie Korea style. Nothing new, but well put together.
![]() | Feast (Unrated Edition)
Buy new: $11.49 / Used from: $1.86 (C) Largely stupid, but it has some nice gore and a bit of charm that makes it watchable.
![]() | Rest Stop (Unrated Edition)
Buy new: $11.49 / Used from: $0.51 (D) This movie reminds me why I don't watch too many direct to dvd films: They usually suck. I'll need to remember that...
![]() | Invasion of the Body Snatchers [Region 2]
Buy used from: $4.80 (A-) First-rate atmospheric horror. Superior to the original, and a brilliant realization of the classic premise.
![]() | Requiem for a Dream (Director's Cut)
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $2.85 (D+) The most annoying film I've seen recently. A number of dimwitted, unappealing characters do drugs while Arronofsky uses the same 3 stylistic tricks he knows about 1000 times. The characters aren't likable, so it's just tedious and self-important. Co-Starring Ellen Bustryn as an elderly Jewish chipmunk.
![]() | The Lower Depths (Kurosawa 1957) / The Lower Depths (Renoir 1936) - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $35.99 / Used from: $10.49 (B+) (Just the Kurosawa film) Not one of his best movies, but still a well-told, interesting and sometimes powerful film.
![]() | American Psycho (Uncut Killer Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $1.98 (B) A fairly shallow and trivial film in spite of the hype, controversy and its own pretentions, but "American Psycho" has got enough wit and style (plus Bale's great performance) to make it worth a watch.
![]() | Amores Perros
Buy new: $6.49 / Used from: $4.14 (A-) A fantastic, elaborate debut from Inarritu. He's a real talent, obviously.
![]() | Shaft
Buy new: $9.98 / Used from: $0.88 (B) Very cheap and with some terrible performances, but a lot of fun and Roundtree is very cool in the titular role.
![]() | Thank You for Smoking (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $2.32 (B+) A legitimately intelligent and insightful black comedy/satire, though it's perhaps a bit light on the actual story.
![]() | Waiting for Guffman
Buy new: $5.79 / Used from: $3.59 (B) Not generally laugh out loud funny for me, but "Waiting For Guffman" is consistently amusing and pleasantly good-natured.
![]() | Strangers with Candy
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $1.72 (B+) It's not as funny as the show was at its best, but it's still damn funny.
![]() | Pi
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $1.89 (B) Far better than the dull, pretentious "Requiem For A Dream". Some interesting ideas and a good, appropriate visual style, though it seems a bit long even at a mere 85 minutes.
![]() | Fargo (Special Edition)
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $1.88 (A) I hadn't watched this in a while, and I'd half forgotten just how great it is. There's a little too much Minnesota stuff, but it's brilliant otherwise with a strong plot, interesting and likable characters, good visuals and music and flawlessly executed tone changes. The Coen's shouldn't be able to pull it all together, but they do. Their best, and an all-time classic
![]() | After Hours
Buy new: $15.49 / Used from: $2.96 (B) A convoluted, nightmarish black-comedy from Scorsese. Not amongst his best work, but it seems a bit unjustly forgotten nowadays.
![]() | Notorious - Criterion Collection
Buy used from: $32.45 (B) Probably the weakest of the universally reknowned Hitchcock films that I've seen, but that's still far from bad. I could stand for more spy-thriller and less romance, but it's still a good watch and comes to a great climax.
![]() | Network (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $23.49 / Used from: $11.75 (A-) A truly bizarre, outrageous and daring satire. Plenty of great speeches in this one.
![]() | City on Fire
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $1.78 (C) This movie is fortunate that Tarantino knocked off a good portion of this, cause it hasn't got anything worth noticing by itself.
![]() | Jigoku - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $26.99 / Used from: $9.47 (B) The plot is more than a little goofy and overly convoluted, but they make up for it with the terrific visuals of hell and the general mood of the film.
![]() | Kwaidan - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $24.49 / Used from: $13.18 (B) A beautiful, elegant anthology of Japanese ghost stories substantially weakened by a horrendously overlong 3 segment. That thing could stand to have 30 of its 60 minutes lopped off. I'd score a lot higher w/o that, but it's still definitely worth a look.
![]() | Pulp Fiction (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $8.05 (A) Ahh, what can I say that hasn't been said. Willis's wife annoys me, but that's the only flaw in this brilliant film. I still prefer 'Kill Bill' myself, but this one is worthy of all its praise.
![]() | The French Connection (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $4.25 (B+) Tense, tightly wound crime-thriller. Very good performances all around.
![]() | Onibaba - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $27.49 / Used from: $16.99 (B-) Terrific mood and scenery, but it's got a fairly dull plot. Too bad, it coulda been great.
![]() | Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $15.49 / Used from: $2.50 (B+) Severely entertaining noir/hard-boiled detective parody/hommage. Like most self-referential films it's a bit obvious at times, but it has a lot of genuine cleverness and still works dramatically. Great, appealing performance from Downey, too.
![]() | Altered States
Buy new: $9.49 / Used from: $1.68 (B-) Quite silly and filled with tedious, pseudo-scientific dialogue, but it's got plenty of cool old-school SFX and the generally strong performances give the generally goofy plot some weight.
