Music That's Good For The Head!
By an Amazon.com customer
Electric LadylandElectric Ladyland by The Jimi Hendrix Experience
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $6.99
My favortite album of all time!
Hot RatsHot Rats by Frank Zappa
Buy used from: $7.38
Frank at his best, and a great introduction to jazz-fusion.
The Inner Mounting FlameThe Inner Mounting Flame by John McLaughlin & Mahavishnu Orchestra
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $3.59
If you're not familiar with Mahavishnu Orchestra, I highly recommend!
London CallingLondon Calling by The Clash
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $3.39
It's unfortunate that The Clash get sterotyped as "punk," because the music borrows from so many different styles. A double album with no clunkers!
Pet SoundsPet Sounds by The Beach Boys
Buy used from: $1.10
I only bought it because I kept seeing it on every "Greatest Albums" list. I must admit that I didn't "get it" at first, but, after repeated listenings I understand the praise it receives.
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club BandSgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band by The Beatles
Buy new: $16.99 / Used from: $2.99
should require no explanation...
Life's Too GoodLife's Too Good by The Sugarcubes
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $0.83
The best band to come out of Iceland! Bjork at her quirky best!
Giant StepsGiant Steps by John Coltrane
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $2.82
To the uninitiated, I would simply say that Coltrane needs to be experienced. Giant Steps is my favorite album/song.
Bitches BrewBitches Brew by Miles Davis
Buy used from: $7.98
If you want to be cool, leave disc 2 in your player for a few weeks - it will rub off on you.
Hunky DoryHunky Dory by David Bowie
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $5.49
All of the Bowie albums before Let's Dance are excellent. Whereas most of his fans would choose Ziggy Stardust as his masterpiece, I go with Hunky Dory.
MeddleMeddle by Pink Floyd
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $4.98
For those who are only familiar with the Pink Floyd songs that are classic rock staples (and those are excellent, by the way), you should really try Meddle. Along with Saucerful of Secrets, my favorite Floyd.
More Songs About Buildings and FoodMore Songs About Buildings and Food by Talking Heads
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $4.96
I've converted so many people into Talking Heads fans....such a cool band. If you've only ever heard the MTV stuff like Burning Down the House or Once In A Lifetime, you are missing out on one of the best bands ever.
Layla and Other Assorted Love SongsLayla and Other Assorted Love Songs by Derek and the Dominos
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $3.78
I can't think of anything to say about this album other than I love it start to finish - an all-time favorite!
Marquee MoonMarquee Moon by Television
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $2.18
Late 70's kind of new wave....two fine guitarists, but not in a rippin' guitar solo kind of way - just cool rhythms from distortion-free guitars.
801 Live801 Live by 801
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $6.49
Great live album featuring Brian Eno and Phil Manzanera (of Roxy Music fame). Their cover of the Beatles' Tomorrow Never Knows is unbeleivable!
Electric WarriorElectric Warrior by T. Rex
Buy used from: $3.99
I think I originally bought this just so I could have "Get It On (Bang A Gong)" but the entire album is excellent!
Their Satanic Majesties RequestTheir Satanic Majesties Request by The Rolling Stones
Buy used from: $4.75
The Stones album that nobody ever knows, despite it being one of their best! I've read that this was their answer to Sgt. Pepper's! It's not quite on that level, but it's definitely tripped out and a good listen.
OdelayOdelay by Beck
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $0.28
I love that Beck borrows from so many different styles. I like all of his albums, but this is my favorite.
The Best of Django ReinhardtThe Best of Django Reinhardt by Django Reinhardt
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $4.30
Anybody that is into guitar should familiarize themself with Django Reinhardt - it's not for everybody - the recordings are very old, and he is usually accompanied by a violinist (which has been the main reason people I have had listen to him cite for not liking the music). You'll swear that there are at least two people playing guitar most of the time when it is, in fact, one French, Gypsy.
