My Favorite Albums of 2006
By an Amazon.com customer
SurpriseSurprise by Paul Simon
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $0.98
It wasn't easy choosing between the top three for my favorite of the year, but ultimately Paul Simon's return to form gets the honor. "Surprise" is really a sonic collaboration between Simon and Brian Eno, and the result is Simon's strongest effort by far since his classic "Graceland." I am shocked that this album didn't get more publicity, because it is a triumph...
ContinuumContinuum by John Mayer
Buy used from: $4.47
John Mayer is one of the few true musicians left in a world full of dolled-up musical "entertainers" today. He seems to be someone who makes music, not for the money he can make from it, but because it is truly his passion. Being a great songwriter and gifted guitar player doesn't hurt things, either. He just keeps getting better with each album.
Game TheoryGame Theory by The Roots
Buy new: $10.97 / Used from: $4.69
The Roots finally returned to form in 2006 with "Game Theory," their first album for Def Jam. It is by far their best album since "Things Fall Apart." From beginning to end, it is a sonic journey that is well worth the time and effort...
American V: A Hundred HighwaysAmerican V: A Hundred Highways by Johnny Cash
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $6.99
Rick Rubin didn't finish building the music around Mr. Cash's final vocal tracks until two years after Mr. Cash had died. The result is a sparse, haunting, and beautiful recording. It's not exactly the feel good album of the year, as Mr. Cash sings about his impending mortality. It is, however, a beautiful final movement in a long and illustrious life. God bless Johnny Cash...
Good MonstersGood Monsters by Jars of Clay
Buy new: $15.99 / Used from: $3.41
Jars of Clay has been one of the few Christian bands that are consistently worth listening to over the last decade, and while I don't think "Good Monsters" is their strongest album overall, it is still among the best I heard this year. "Oh My God" is also a strong candidate for my Song of the Year. They are definitely worth checking out...
Get Used to ItGet Used to It by The Brand New Heavies
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $1.80
I'd never really listened to The Brand New Heavies before this album came out, but the funk is thick on this album. They also do a phenomenal cover of "I Don't Know Why (I Love You)," an obscure song that was co-written by Stevie Wonder and recorded by David Ruffin in 1969, that I could listen to all day long.
Pearl JamPearl Jam by Pearl Jam
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $2.61
Apparently, 2006 was quite the year for returning to form. Pearl Jam has always been a band that's appealed to me, but some of their recent albums have been a little hit or miss. This self-titled release, however, was a consistent hit, and is their strongest album since "Vs."
WintersongWintersong by Sarah McLachlan
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $4.72
It's unusual for me to put a holiday album on the list, but Sarah McLachlan has forced me to make an exception. It is darker and more introspective than most holiday albums, and makes for a beautiful listen. Except for her arrangement of "What Child is This" that really doesn't do much for me, the album is strong, and definitely makes my list of top five holiday albums...
People Gonna TalkPeople Gonna Talk by James Hunter
Buy new: $15.99 / Used from: $2.28
I had never heard of James Hunter until I saw this CD at Starbucks, but I decided to pick it up on a whim. I'm glad I took the chance. Hunter is a 40ish British guy with a penchant for recreating old-school R&B. It's not what you would call "groundbreaking," except perhaps in a retro, old school, Sam Cooke kind of way. It's one of the most pleasant surprises I heard in '06...
St. ElsewhereSt. Elsewhere by Gnarls Barkley
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $2.75
One of my favorite purchases of '06 was Danger Mouse's "The Grey Album," a brilliant 2004 mash-up of Jay-Z's black album with elements of The Beatles' white album. Gnarls Barkley is DM's most successful project yet, and while it doesn't quite match up to the creative genius of "The Grey Album," it's still a solid (if unorthodox) album. Plus, I really wanted to mention DM on here...
What It Is! Funky Soul And Rare Grooves (1967-1977)What It Is! Funky Soul And Rare Grooves (1967-1977) by Various Artists
Buy new: $52.99 / Used from: $42.00
Finally, this is the best box set that was released this year. "What It Is!" is a 4-disc set that reaches into the vaults of Atlantic, Atco and Warner Bros. Records and digs up 91 obscure funk gems from 1967 to 1977. There's not a single clunker to be found in the set. It's money well spent...
