Apricots on the Nile: A Memoir with RecipesApricots on the Nile: A Memoir with Recipes by Colette Rossant
Buy new: $10.26 / Used from: $4.19
Rossant describes her Egyptian-French Upbringing. This book is really interesting because of its introduction into 1920s Egypt's culture and food.
Monsoon Diary: Reveries and Recipes from South IndiaMonsoon Diary: Reveries and Recipes from South India by Shoba Narayan
Buy used from: $1.85
Narayan speaks of her life in both India and the United States. Narayan is from a Brahman caste so her recipes are Vegetarian. Her novel introduced me to new fruits, vegetables, and spices. Another great book to learn about a different culture.
Like Water for Chocolate: A Novel in Monthly Installments with Recipes, Romances, and Home RemediesLike Water for Chocolate: A Novel in Monthly Installments with Recipes, Romances, and Home Remedies by Laura Esquivel
Buy new: $10.04 / Used from: $0.87
Esquivel's book is probably the best love story I have read so far. The book tells the story of Tita who has to care for her mother instead of marry the man she loves. Tita is an excellent cook and the many recipes reflect her life. The movie is also delicious.
Tender at the Bone: Growing Up at the TableTender at the Bone: Growing Up at the Table by Ruth Reichl
Buy new: $10.85 / Used from: $0.01
Reichl is best known as the NY Times Newspaper Restaurant Critic and Gourmet Magazine Editor in Chief. Her 3 autobiographies (lets all hope she pens more) recount her life from childhood to critic. This is my favorite one of her series. All of them include extremely good recipes.

Novel Cuisine: Recipes That Recreate the Culinary Highlights of Favorite NovelsNovel Cuisine: Recipes That Recreate the Culinary Highlights of Favorite Novels by Elaine Borish
Buy used from: $0.74
This book takes recipes and meals from different great novels and gives excerpts on how to prepare them. The excerpts come from cookbooks of that time so the instructions may be difficult to follow. Some recipes are also a little unusual for this day and age such as Collops (from Kidnapped), mutton pasty (from Lorna Doone, and Oatcakes (from Frankenstein).
Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary UnderbellyKitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly by Anthony Bourdain
Buy new: $17.15 / Used from: $2.45
I cant say that I like most chefs who become authors but this book is really great. Anthony Bourdain describes his rebellious upbringing to making his way into the cooking arena. I have seen his show No Reservatios and I thought he may be arrogant and crass, but he is actually a really good writer and worth his reputaton.
