Flyte (Septimus Heap, Book 2)Flyte (Septimus Heap, Book 2) by Angie Sage
Buy used from: $6.65
I recommend. I'm sold on this series.
Morality for Beautiful Girls (No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency, Book 3)Morality for Beautiful Girls (No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency, Book 3) by Alexander McCall Smith
Buy new: $10.08 / Used from: $0.01
I recommend. I'm also sold on this series.
The Princes of Ireland: The Dublin SagaThe Princes of Ireland: The Dublin Saga by Edward Rutherfurd
Buy new: $11.53 / Used from: $0.17
Your call. I liked the introduction to Irish history. There's a fair amount of sex and in a few cases the author takes it too far. Any values are left to the characters: some have worthy ones, others don't.
The Rebels of Ireland: The Dublin SagaThe Rebels of Ireland: The Dublin Saga by Edward Rutherfurd
Buy new: $11.53 / Used from: $1.45
Ditto "The Princes of Ireland".
Eclipse Special Edition (The Twilight Saga)Eclipse Special Edition (The Twilight Saga) by Stephenie Meyer
Buy used from: $5.99
I recommend, though Meyer pushes it to my limit. The making out scenes are provocative but ultimately the author's values (which I share) win out.
The Host: A NovelThe Host: A Novel by Stephenie Meyer
Buy new: $14.97 / Used from: $9.97
I recommend. Once again, Meyers pushes my limits, but values win out in the end. Beware... I haven't read a book that gripped me like this one in a long time. Not only did I not feel sleepy as I turned page, after page, I didn't feel hungry! This story is as profound as it is tantalizing.
Suite FrancaiseSuite Francaise by Irene Nemirovsky
Buy new: $10.20 / Used from: $0.01
I recommend. Not a happy book, but well written... It provides a take on WWII I hadn't read or seen before. Be aware that though there are no "sex scenes", it comes across as common to have relations outside of marriage and this practice is not necessarily viewed as immoral.
The Westing Game (Puffin Modern Classics)The Westing Game (Puffin Modern Classics) by Ellen Raskin
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $0.16
I recommend. Quite the story!
Rapunzel's RevengeRapunzel's Revenge by Shannon Hale
Buy new: $12.91 / Used from: $9.80
I recommend. I think maybe graphic novels aren't my thing. But there's certainly nothing offensive here.
Breaking Dawn (The Twilight Saga, Book 4)Breaking Dawn (The Twilight Saga, Book 4) by Stephenie Meyer
Buy new: $10.50 / Used from: $9.81
I recommend. Meyer pushes me to my limit again - and maybe a little over.
Wives and DaughtersWives and Daughters by Elizabeth Gaskell
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $9.48
I recommend! The BBC "Cranford" production introduced me to Elizabeth Gaskell. I'm a fan!
So Brave, Young and Handsome: A NovelSo Brave, Young and Handsome: A Novel by Leif Enger
Buy new: $16.32 / Used from: $0.01
I recommend! I'll follow Leif Enger's prose anywhere. Happily, he keeps things "clean" while dealing with both the seamy and upstanding elements of life in this world.
The Joys of LoveThe Joys of Love by Madeleine L'Engle
Buy new: $11.53 / Used from: $0.78
I recommend. As always, L'Engle is frank. She doesn't shy away from sex, but handles it carefully in a way I admire. I'm glad her nieces got this work published.
Death in the GardenDeath in the Garden by Elizabeth Ironside
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $0.01
I recommend. We're in a murder mystery here, folks, and where there's murder, there is immorality. Ironside treats adult topics without wallowing in them.
The Cranford Chronicles (Vintage Classics)The Cranford Chronicles (Vintage Classics) by Elizabeth Gaskell
Buy new: $9.95 / Used from: $4.95
I recommend! Gaskell makes me laugh out loud. Also check out the BBC production of Cranford. That's what got me started on this kick...
The Last LectureThe Last Lecture by Randy Pausch
Buy new: $14.27 / Used from: $3.28
I recommend. There's likely not anything in here you don't already know. But I like reading books about dying every so often because they help me keep perspective.
An Excellent Mystery: The Eleventh Chronicle of Brother CadfaelAn Excellent Mystery: The Eleventh Chronicle of Brother Cadfael by Ellis Peters
Buy used from: $1.98
I recommend. Don't know what I'll do when I hit the end of this series...
Storm FrontStorm Front by Jim Butcher
Buy used from: $1,377.98
I prevaricate. I'd rate this one PG-13. There isn't much foul language, but when it's there, it's very foul. For the most part it treats sex by just stating the facts. But the facts are pretty foul, too. At the same it's a very entertaining book.
These is my Words: The Diary of Sarah Agnes Prine, 1881-1901 (P.S.)These is my Words: The Diary of Sarah Agnes Prine, 1881-1901 (P.S.) by Nancy Turner
Buy new: $10.79 / Used from: $5.31
I recommend! A little gem of a book. Thanks, Colleen!
RulesRules by Cynthia Lord
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $1.87
I recommend. Very readable story about dealing with autism.
For the Love of Mike (Molly Murphy Mysteries)For the Love of Mike (Molly Murphy Mysteries) by Rhys Bowen
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $1.58
I recommend. I'll see this series through.
EverEver by Gail Carson Levine
Buy new: $12.23 / Used from: $3.99
I recommend. Be aware that this book poses some major theological questions that could cause confusion for the theologically uncertain...
Everything is IlluminatedEverything is Illuminated by Jonathan Safran Foer
Buy used from: $3.59
I don't recommend. I decided to put it down before I finished it because the vulgarity was too much. I read as much as I did because the way the story is put together is interesting. Too bad it's ruined with infantile bodily function humor.
Inkdeath (Inkheart)Inkdeath (Inkheart) by Cornelia Funke
Buy new: $14.61 / Used from: $13.34
I recommend. I think anyone who has visited far away lands and times and worlds courtesy of a book will enjoy this series. (This is the last book in the series, on the chance you didn't know that already.)
The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie SocietyThe Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer
Buy new: $14.96 / Used from: $3.25
I recommend!!!!! Please don't let my five exclamation marks raise your expectations too high, but really, this is one of the best books I've read in awhile. I sing the authors' praises for creating not only a fabulous read, but it's clean!
Murder at the Vicarage: A Miss Marple Mystery (Agatha Christie Collection)Murder at the Vicarage: A Miss Marple Mystery (Agatha Christie Collection) by Agatha Christie
Buy new: $9.60 / Used from: $0.32
I recommend. I'm sure you know Miss Marple. I blazed through everything by Agatha Christie I could get my hands on by the time I was a teenager. She's worth re-visiting.
Brideshead RevisitedBrideshead Revisited by Evelyn Waugh
Buy new: $9.74 / Used from: $3.14
You decide. The book is fairly clean... It deals with adultery and hints at homosexuality, though it doesn't go into scenes on either topic. One main character is an alcoholic. I guess this book gets all sorts of literary praise, but I didn't grow to care much about the characters except for feeling sorry for them all being so mixed up.
So YesterdaySo Yesterday by Scott Westerfeld
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $0.01
I recommend. I recall one to three instances of bad language. Very fun. Main character has a good relationship with his parents - refreshing!
4:50 From Paddington: A Miss Marple Mystery (Agatha Christie Collection)4:50 From Paddington: A Miss Marple Mystery (Agatha Christie Collection) by Agatha Christie
Buy new: $10.20 / Used from: $3.40
I recommend. I'm picking up things I didn't see as a young reader. I *love* Miss Marple's "niece".
Kittens for DummiesKittens for Dummies by Dusty Rainbolt
Buy new: $11.55 / Used from: $0.01
I recommend. I'm planning to buy this one after reading the library's copy - before I get a kitten or two.
Retired Kid, TheRetired Kid, The by Jon Agee
Buy new: $10.48 / Used from: $7.25
I recommend. Couldn't resist the title!
Charlie Bone and The Beast (Children Of The Red King, Book 6)Charlie Bone and The Beast (Children Of The Red King, Book 6) by Jenny Nimmo
Buy new: $9.35 / Used from: $4.45
I recommend. Continuing to enjoy the series, though I feel like Nimmo left too many loose ends in this one...
The Lace Reader: A NovelThe Lace Reader: A Novel by Brunonia Barry
Buy new: $17.96 / Used from: $0.48
I don't recommend. It's definitely intriguing and a decent handling of sexual abuse - it never gets too graphic but nevertheless communicates the terrible consequences. I give it demerits for too much foul language.
Marley & Me: Life and Love with the World's Worst DogMarley & Me: Life and Love with the World's Worst Dog by John Grogan
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.01
I recommend. I'm a cat person, and I enjoyed it. It even made me cry. Be aware the book discusses sex, but in an appropriate manner. The author's views on pre-marital sex may not match yours. A few instances of bad language.
The Monsters of TempletonThe Monsters of Templeton by Lauren Groff
Buy new: $11.96 / Used from: $0.01
I don't recommend. This book has a major potty mouth problem and there's lots of free love going on. It's a shame (how many times have I said that?). The writing is interesting. The author also manages to pull off a hopeful ending in spite of a lot of bad stuff that happens.
Bel CantoBel Canto by Ann Patchett
Buy new: $10.04 / Used from: $0.47
You decide. A fascinating tale of hostages and their keepers. Unfortunately, fornication and adultry play their parts towards the end of the book. In one case, the fornication contains a little too much detail. In the other case, the adultry isn't described, just condoned. I remember only one instance of foul language.
The Underneath (Ala Notable Children's Books. Middle Readers)The Underneath (Ala Notable Children's Books. Middle Readers) by Kathi Appelt
Buy new: $12.23 / Used from: $6.56
I recommend. This is good storytelling in language that sings.
The Irregulars: Roald Dahl and the British Spy Ring in Wartime WashingtonThe Irregulars: Roald Dahl and the British Spy Ring in Wartime Washington by Jennet Conant
Buy new: $20.12 / Used from: $0.15
I got bored halfway through the book and stopped reading. Remember I don't do well with nonfiction...
In Like Flynn (Molly Murphy Mysteries)In Like Flynn (Molly Murphy Mysteries) by Rhys Bowen
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $1.59
I prevaricate. What bothers me is that Molly commits fornication in this book. It seems she believes in free love. The jury is still out as to whether the sex scene was too descriptive.
