Death WishDeath Wish
Buy new: $9.49 / Used from: $3.69
Before all the other vigilante movies there was the original, Death Wish. In this film Charles Bronson plays Paul Kersey, an architect whose wife & daughter are accosted by muggers. When the law is unable to bring Kersey’s attackers to justice he does. This movie had controversy written all over it. Consequently Death Wish spawned 4 sequels & is probably one of Bronson’s most memorable roles.
Dirty Harry (Two-Disc Special Edition)Dirty Harry (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $6.19
Just like Death Wish, this movie set the standard for the rebel cop genre and Clint Eastwood. In this flick Clint plays Harry Callahan, a police officer who is sick and tired of all the loopholes in the legal system. These ambiguities become apparent when the Scorpio Killer becomes a real thorn in Callahan’s side.
Taxi Driver (Collector's Edition)Taxi Driver (Collector's Edition)
Buy used from: $1.62
Is it a Grindhouse film, is it an exploitation film or is just an avant-garde film? Robert DeNiro displays excellent character development as Travis Bickle in this movie. What a wonderful vision of abnormal psychology that Martin Scorsese paints.
...And Justice For All...And Justice For All
Buy new: $9.95 / Used from: $1.94
In this movie Al Pacino plays a lawyer with a sense of guilt. Many might state that the former notion is an oxymoron. Nevertheless, Pacino gives a wonderful performance as a lawyer looking to do the right thing. The last 15 minutes is worth the price of admission.
Daughters of DarknessDaughters of Darkness
Buy used from: $7.11
This might be the epitome of an artsy movie. There is a lot of symbolism, imagery, interesting special effects and curious directing in this movie. There are only 4 major characters, so the minimalism of individuals gives this movie an intimate vibe. I swear John Karlen looks like Luke Skywalker. When the credits roll & the hypnotic score begins to play, I still get chills.
The Velvet VampireThe Velvet Vampire
Buy new: $9.95 / Used from: $6.51
In this dreamy erotic-thriller, a married couple spends the weekend with a vampire in a desert. Now in this movie the traditional vampire rules are broken a bit, but it is still a fun ride. The woman who plays the vampire is absolutely beautiful. This movie is in the same vein, pun intended, as “Daughters of Darkness” but not as good.
The MechanicThe Mechanic
Buy new: $11.49 / Used from: $6.79
In this movie, Charles Bronson plays a “mechanic”, yet he doesn’t fix cars. A “mechanic” is a contracted killer and/or hit man. Charles Bronson gives a very gritty performance & is smooth & astute the entire picture. The elements of the existentialist are displayed rather nicely in this film.
The GauntletThe Gauntlet
Buy new: $5.79 / Used from: $2.48
Clint, Clint plays another cop named Ben Shockley who is somewhat Dirty Harry-ish named in this crime drama. Shockley’s mission is escort witness, a hooker, from Las Vegas to Phoenix. Sounds simple, but it isn’t & the result is a roller coaster ride that ends with a bus & a billion bullets.
Dawn of the Dead (Ultimate Edition)Dawn of the Dead (Ultimate Edition)
Buy new: $37.49 / Used from: $12.00
What can I say? This film created the standard for zombie movies. George Romero is able to mix socialism, humor, gore, action, drama & horror all into one movie. It might be a little B by today’s divining rod, but this is still a classic.
Corvette SummerCorvette Summer
Buy new: $5.79 / Used from: $9.10
I know that this movie is a bit campy & maybe not true Avant-garde, but it isn’t your normal teenage comedy. I mean seeing Mark Hamill playing a teenager obsessed with find a corvette & Annie Potts as a “wannabe” hooker is priceless. This movie is not your average fair of the 1970s that is for sure.
Mr MajestykMr Majestyk
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $5.52
Yet again another Charles Bronson film can you tell I’m a fan? In this movie Mr. Majestyk (Bronson) just wants to grow & sell watermelons. Sadly, Mr. Majestyk gets indirectly involved with the Mob & now the Mob won’t leave him alone. After watching this movie I will never look at a watermelon the same way again.
I Spit On Your Grave (Millennium Edition)I Spit On Your Grave (Millennium Edition)
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $29.98
This film is probably one of the most controversial films in cinema history. This is the story about the rape, abasement, revenge & redemption of Jennifer Hills. Some feel this movie is a twisted vision of perversion. While others feel this is a tale of atonement & a political statement of feminism. I personally feel this is avant-garde at its best & pushes the envelope.
A Force of OneA Force of One
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $2.01
This movie probably is the catapult for what Chuck Norris is today. Chuck plays a karate champion that is aiding the police in finding drug dealers who are killing cops with martial art techniques. I didn’t say it was award winning, but a different type of film, with lots of roundhouse kicks.
Play Misty for MePlay Misty for Me
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $5.93
Before Fatal Attraction, there was this movie. In this movie Clint Eastwood plays a DJ who messes around with the wrong girl. When Clint ends the fling, that is when the histrionics begin. This movie is very original & the first flick Clint ever directed.
ManhattanManhattan
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $7.50
In this film, shot in black & white, Woody touches on love, infidelity, philosophy, humor & of course satire. This movie was shot with such beauty & really touches the human spirit. This movie is a wonderful piece of cinema.
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (Two-Disc Special Edition)One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $24.49 / Used from: $6.11
This is a pretty well known film & an Academy Award winner. Nevertheless, this is a wonderful character study in psychology. Jack Nicholson is amazing in this movie. A very tense movie with some humor sprinkled throughout. This is a fine example when Avant-garde meets Hollywood.
