Bad GirlsBad Girls by Donna Summer
Buy new: $25.99 / Used from: $9.99
Definitely one for the dance floor, but also seeing Donna veering into a rock (“Hot stuff”, “My baby understands”) and country-ish (“On my honour”) direction. The deluxe edition comes with extended versions of some of her hits, including the rare "Foxes" version of "On the radio".
Donna SummerDonna Summer by Donna Summer
Buy used from: $74.95
Along with “Bad girls”, this is another favourite album of mine. I love the musical diversity; R&B, Eurodisco (“love is just a breath away”), Rock (the Springsteen penned “Protection”), and even Jazz (“Lush life”) with super producer Quincy Jones at the helm.
BadBad by Michael Jackson
Buy used from: $2.73
My favourite Michael Jackson album chock full of great songs; “Liberian girl”, “Dirty Diana”, and the Prince-like “Speed demon” to mention a few.
Songs in the Key of LifeSongs in the Key of Life by Stevie Wonder

This one is definitely one to make you think. Stevie’s magnum opus.
Here, My DearHere, My Dear by Marvin Gaye
Buy new: $7.97 / Used from: $4.69
Largely overlooked album by Marvin, but simply awesome. Taking the jazz/soul/funk style of “What’s going on” and marrying it to lyrics dealing with a painful divorce. A winner! Take a listen to the jazzy “Sparrow” or the more upbeat “Time to get it together”.
The Miseducation of Lauryn HillThe Miseducation of Lauryn Hill by Lauryn Hill
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $1.47
Awesome solo debut from the stupendously talented Ms. Hill. Waiting for her to get her act together and return with another masterpiece.
Back to BlackBack to Black by Amy Winehouse

Retro jazz/soul chanteuse from the UK. Now she’s unleashed a horde of copycats from the UK.
EmbryaEmbrya by Maxwell
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $1.50
My favourite album from my favourite Neo Soul male singer. Experimental and ground-breaking, and that amazing voice (take a listen to his vocal gymnastics on “Submerge”, “Know these things”, or “Luxury: Cococure”).
New Amerykah, Pt. 1: 4th World WarNew Amerykah, Pt. 1: 4th World War by Erykah Badu
Buy new: $10.97 / Used from: $4.73
Even more ground-breaking and experimental, deep lyrics with little weird sonic flourishes, and still fun.

Awesome blend on poetry, soul, jazz and hip hop.

Tough choice as all their albums are amazing.
UprisingUprising by Bob Marley & the Wailers

Part of the soundtrack of my youth. “Forever loving Jah” is awesome, and not forgetting his acoustic classic “Redemption song”.

“There is a light that never goes out” is my favourite Smiths song ever. This collection has most of my favourites.
True DemocracyTrue Democracy by Steel Pulse

Parallel LinesParallel Lines by Blondie

Ground-breaking million-selling alternative rock album from Christian music trio DC Talk, which opened the way for other acts like Newsboys, Audio Adrenaline and Jars of Clay. Nirvana for the saved!

Introducing the Hardline According to Terence Trent d'ArbyIntroducing the Hardline According to Terence Trent d'Arby by Terence Trent d'Arby
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $1.00
Long before Neo soul had a name, Terence Trent D’arby was doing just that. Fantastic debut and an amazing vocalist. The album has a very diverse sound, from the reggae-ish “Rain”, to “Let’s go forward”, to the James Brown “Dance little sister”.

“Englishman in New York”, “Fragile” and “They dance alone”, three songs with different styles from this fantastic album.
OK ComputerOK Computer by Radiohead
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $2.79
Radiohead took a step into the distorted direction and were never the same. “Lucky” is spine tingling.
The Velvet RopeThe Velvet Rope by Janet Jackson
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $0.97
Janet’s Mangum opus. From the cutting violins of Vanessa Mae on the title track, through the angry rock of “What about” and the disco “Together again”, the sonic palette is diverse.
On the RadioOn the Radio by Donna Summer
Buy new: $17.98 / Used from: $5.92
There may be more extensive collections of Ms Summer’s music, but I have a soft spot for this one. With the hits edited and segued together like on her studio albums, this was the album that introduced “No more tears” and “On the radio” to the world.

Tina’s massive comeback album, containing (in my opinion) the best ever version of “Let’s stay together”. The bonus tracks (on the deluxe edition) are brilliant, including “Rock & roll widow” which was the B-side to “What’s love got to do with it”.
