A Few of My Favorite Classic Horror Films
By an Amazon.com customer
Tales From the Crypt / Vault of Horror (Double Feature)Tales From the Crypt / Vault of Horror (Double Feature)
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $4.19
Tales From the Crypt is an outstanding effort, I think. I love the stories chosen to make up this film, some truly unsettling moments! Sadly, Vault of Horror is the edited version of the film, while not nearly as strong as Tales From the Crypt, if you can see it, unedited, it's much more enjoyable.
The Lost ContinentThe Lost Continent
Buy new: $19.97
This was my first-ever Hammer film! I was about 6 or 7 and saw it on late-night TV. While most consider this a lesser effort from Hammer Studios, even today, it remains one of my favorite Hammer films.
Island of Terror [VHS]Island of Terror [VHS]
Buy used from: $9.95
I love this film! This film has an outstanding cast, headed by the always wonderful, Peter Cushing. While many fans feel the creature effects are laughable, the audio effects are quite gruesome, I think.
Horror of DraculaHorror of Dracula
Buy new: $8.49 / Used from: $2.80
Sue me......I think this Hammer film is the best Dracula film version out there. The pairing of Cushing and Lee was genius and the supporting cast held their own, as well.
The Curse of FrankensteinThe Curse of Frankenstein
Buy new: $11.49 / Used from: $3.83
This film often gets abused for the 'Creature' effects. Trust me, I think they're perfect and how can you not enjoy a film where Cushing and Lee are once again part of the fun?
The MummyThe Mummy
Buy new: $5.79 / Used from: $3.09
Hammer's take on the Mummy is one to behold. Again, pairing Cushing and Lee is perfect and Lee conveys more feelings using just his eyes than many people can using an entire body.
The Thing from Another WorldThe Thing from Another World
Buy new: $5.79 / Used from: $5.98
This is the film I heard about for years, before I ever saw it. I wasn't disappointed with my first viewing and I can still settle in and watch this, any time.
Them! (Snap Case)Them! (Snap Case)
Buy new: $17.49 / Used from: $8.15
I first saw this on Saturday afternoon TV, when I was about 4. Watched it with my cousins and I think our Mom's loved it, because we never moved from in front of the TV, the entire time the film was on.
The Exorcist (25th Anniversary Special Edition)The Exorcist (25th Anniversary Special Edition)
Buy used from: $6.59
OK, I can admit it, this film still manages to creep me out. Seems this film is often called, 'overrated' by horror fans, today, but I'm not ashamed to admit, it creeps me out!
The Birds (Collector's Edition)The Birds (Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $15.99 / Used from: $11.08
Saw this on TV as a kid and again, it's another that had a lasting affect on me. Great film with an outstanding cast. Hard not to get some scenes out of your head, either!
Gojira / Godzilla Deluxe Collector's Edition (Gojira/Godzilla [1954] / Godzilla, King of the Monsters [1956])Gojira / Godzilla Deluxe Collector's Edition (Gojira/Godzilla [1954] / Godzilla, King of the Monsters [1956])
Buy new: $15.99 / Used from: $8.98
Most of us grew up with the 'Americanized' film, Godzilla, King of the Monsters, but the original Japanese version of the film must be seen, too. It's a much darker film than the film shows with the added Raymond Burr scenes.
The Monster That Challenged the WorldThe Monster That Challenged the World
Buy used from: $2.69
This probably doesn't sound like much on paper, but this really is one of those 'fun' 50s films. Giant, prehistoric mollusks probably don't sound too scary or creepy, but this film does manage to be just that, creepy at times.
Night of the LepusNight of the Lepus
Buy used from: $98.99
Giant, man-eating....bunnies! I kid you not! Now, you're probably thinking this is too laughable to enjoy, but it's played just as serious as can be and it is a little unnerving seeing these fluffy cottontails attacking and eating humans!
The Green Slime [VHS]The Green Slime [VHS]
Buy used from: $12.90
For many folks, the opening tune is the best part of the film. Me, I enjoy it.....the poster may be the best aspect of the film, in all honesty, but I do like the tentacled, one-eyed beasties, a lot!
Frankenstein Must Be DestroyedFrankenstein Must Be Destroyed
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $4.99
This is a wonderful entry into the Hammer Frankenstein series. It probably shows Baron Frankenstein at his most brutal and the end result is a film definitely worth checking out.
The Terrornauts [VHS]The Terrornauts [VHS]
Buy used from: $15.75
Love it....love it....love it. The effects and creatures look like something from the classic Dr Who series, which isn't a bad thing at all, in my opinion. In one scene, most of the characters are even wearing what appears to be bathing caps! This is one film that you definitely need to see to appreciate.
