![]() | Bach: Brandenburg Concertos / Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment by Johann Sebastian Bach
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $6.98 This is fun and joyful music that for many people may be their first attraction to the amazing sound world of J.S. Bach. If you're not sure if you'll like classical music, but want to just make one purchase to test the waters, then I suggest you get this version of Bach's Brandenburg Concertos.
![]() | Bach: Orchestral Suites Nos. 1-4
Buy new: $9.98 / Used from: $2.74 Once you've listened to Bach's Brandenburg concertos, you'll probably want more of his music. I recommend his orchestral suites, they're very "user friendly" to ears unaccustomed to classical music.
![]() | Bach: Sonatas & Partitas
Buy used from: $107.78 Do you associate the virtuoso solo violin with the romantic frenzy of Paganini's legendary performances? Well, listen to these masterpieces written by J.S. Bach, and played masterfully by Itzhak Perlman, and you'll associate the virtuoso solo violin with the names of Bach and Perlman. I also recommend Bach's violin concertos by Perlman.
![]() | Complete Harpsichord Concertos by Bach
Buy new: $23.98 / Used from: $16.99 The faster paced movements of these concertos sound absolutely magical to my ears. (Note: Igor Kipnis recorded a better version of these concertos, but until his CD set comes back in print, this is a good alternate choice). See my Space Music listmania for further comments on this great composition by Bach.
![]() | Bach - Mass in B minor / Argenta, Nichols, Chance, Stafford, Milner, W. Evans, Gardiner by Johann Sebastian Bach
Buy new: $32.99 / Used from: $14.55 Some experts in Classical music declare that this is the greatest of all Western art music. I tend to agree, however I didn't put it at the beginning of this list because its probably not an easy introduction to classical music for most new listeners. If you like it, I also recommend Bach's St. Matthew Passion by Istvan Gati on the Naxos label.
![]() | Mozart: The Great Serenades
Buy new: $15.99 / Used from: $7.99 There are hundreds if not thousands of recordings of Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, and you might be tempted to buy a dirt cheap version of this composition, but you're better off buying this double CD set that contains this famous composition, plus many others, masterfully played under the direction of Sir Neville Marriner.
![]() | Mozart: The Late Symphonies: Nos. 25, 29, 35, 36, 38, 39, 40, 41
Buy used from: $17.65 Here's an amazing collection of the BEST symphonies by Mozart, and in my opinion some of the best symphonies ever written. Beethoven's symphonies get a lot of praise, and I cherish them dearly, but when I was first learning about classical music the symphonies of Mozart were generally more easy for me to listen to and enjoy than Beethoven's.
![]() | Mozart: Piano Concertos Nos. 17 & 18
Buy used from: $4.88 Here's a safe bet, you can chose any piano concerto by Mozart and the odds are that you'll be captivated by the beauty of the piano notes that fall like refreshing rain. I believe that the cream of the crop of his piano concertos are numbers 17 and 18, played impeccably by Murray Perahia.
![]() | Mozart: Die Zauberflöte [The Magic Flute]
Buy new: $23.98 / Used from: $13.87 Don't let the non-English singing prevent you from enjoying this masterpiece. This version has a handy English translation, and once you've read the libretto its pretty easy to follow the storyline as you listen to the music. Or just close your eyes and relax and listen to the singing as if it were abstract musical notes, as you would listen to a violin or piano.
![]() | Beethoven: Complete Symphonies; Overtures; Missa Solemnis [Box Set]
Buy used from: $74.99 This 7 CD set has all of Beethoven's symphonies, plus various overtures and Missa Solemnis. The music is played on period instruments like those actually used in Beethoven's lifetime, so it might sound a little different than modernish versions you might have heard. It might take effort to find a cheap, used copy of this out of print recording.
![]() | Beethoven: Favourite Piano Sonatas by Ludwig van Beethoven
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $6.80 Here, in a double CD set, are the wonderful and famous piano sonatas of Beethoven, played with love, precision, and power by Alfred Brendel. My favorite is the hauntingly beautiful Moonlight Sonata.
![]() | Beethoven: Concerto for violin in D
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $6.99 There have been a distinguished line of master violinists, but among the current ones I think that Itzhak Perlman is the best. And on this splendid recording he masterfully plays the greatest romantic violin concerto ever written.
![]() | Haydn: 6 "London" Symphonies by Sir Colin Davis
Buy used from: $9.99 Remember the quote by Will Rogers who said he never met a man he didn't like. Well some Classical experts declare that they never heard a Haydn symphony they didn't like. In addition to Mozart's symphonies above, here's what I consider the best of the best of classical era symphonies (I count Beethoven's great symphonies as part of the romantic era).
![]() | Franz Joseph Haydn: The Creation by Donna Carter
Buy new: $23.99 / Used from: $16.93 As great as Haydn's symphonies are, perhaps his crowning masterpiece is The Creation. I especially enjoy this version, which is beautifully conducted by Robert Shaw, because its sung in English.
![]() | Dvorak: Symphony no 9 / Kertsz, London Symphony Orchestra (Penguin Music Classics Series) by Wendy Wasserstein
Buy used from: $6.99 In my opinion, Antonin Dvorak is almost close to the musical talent of Mozart and Beethoven. Here is his most famous composition, The New World Symphony #9 (with the sentimental largo "Going home.")
![]() | Dvorak: Slavonic Dances
Buy new: $6.98 / Used from: $2.99 Do you need some joy in your life? How about filling your heart with the rhythms of Dvorak's Slavonic Dances. Dvorak's star of fame began to rise when these charming compositions were first published.
![]() | Dvorak: Serenades Op. 22 & 44
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $7.99 This composition has the wonderful distinction, in my opinion, of instantly dissolving stress. This is a great CD to have for those days when you crash your car driving home after suffering a root canal from a dentist who ran out of anesthesia! (This CD is not "relaxing" in a wimpy sense. Its relaxing because it has the perfect balance of gentle tones and stimulating melodies.)
![]() | Handel - Messiah - Mormon Tabernacle by George Frideric Handel
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $8.86 This miraculously composed music by Handel is associated with spiritual anecdotes. Interpret these as you will: Phil G. Goulding wrote on pg. 201 of his book "Classical Music" (see #39 below) that Handel purportedly said "I did think I saw all heaven before me, and the great God himself," and later said "I think God has visited me."
![]() | Handel: Organ Concertos
Buy new: $21.98 / Used from: $11.30 Although Bach is generally considered the all-time master of the organ, these organ concertos by Handel make a convincing argument that Handel is close to Bach's equal, at least as a composer. I especially enjoy these CDs because the organ is joined with the music of a variety of other instruments in the context of concertos.
![]() | Great Recordings Of The Century - Elgar: Violin Concerto, 'Enigma' Variations / Elgar, Menuhin by Yehudi Menuhin
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $5.62 This is a truly exceptional recording. The sound of Menuhin's violin as he lovingly plays Elgar's concerto is simply beyond the description of words. Its truly a unique beauty that has to be heard to be appreciated. I've searched for years to find another example of music that matches the haunting beauty of this recording, but to no avail.
![]() | Elgar: Cello Concerto & Sea Pictures; Jacqueline Du Pre by Jacqueline Du Pre
Buy used from: $7.65 I haven't read any Classical music critique that didn't rave about the wonders of this CD. Jacqueline Du Pre's amazingly expressive sound of cello playing will probably never be surpassed, and Janet Baker's singing on Sea Pictures is 100% pure beauty.
![]() | Elgar: The Dream of Gerontius
Buy new: $21.98 / Used from: $9.00 When it comes to classical music with English vocals, I especially love the spiritual compositions by Edward Elgar. In addition to the Dream of Gerontius (conducted by Sir John Barbirolli), I love Elgar's compositions The Light of Life, The Apostles, and The Kingdom (all three conducted by the great Richard Hickox).
![]() | Edward Elgar: The Black Knight, Op.25/Scenes From the Bavarian Highlands, Op.27
Buy new: $18.98 / Used from: $9.89 For some great vocal music by Edward Elgar (without a religious connotation) I recommend his compositions The Black Knight and Scenes from the Bavarian Highlands. Be sure to get the version conducted by Richard Hickox!
![]() | Brahms: Symphonies Nos. 1-4; Haydn-Variations; Tragic Overture
Buy used from: $42.94 As much as I love Brahms' symphonies, I must admit that I didn't care for them much when I first heard them. I think it was because I kept expecting to hear a symphony like Mozart's or Haydn's. But when I cleared my preconceived notions and let Brahms' symphonies speak for themselves I was astounded by the majestic music that I had previously failed to appreciate.
![]() | Great Recordings Of The Century - Brahms: Violin Concerto / Giulini, Perlman, Chicago SO by Carlo Maria Giulini
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $1.78 Unlike his symphonies, which may be an acquired taste for many listeners, Brahms' violin concerto is very "user friendly" and quite enjoyable on the first listen. I highly recommend it for listeners who are new to classical music.
![]() | Brahms: Concertos for Piano No. 1 & 2, Fantasia Op. 116 by Ottomar Borwitzky
Buy new: $23.98 / Used from: $10.43 Here are some splendid piano concertos by Brahms that strike a stately balance between classical structure and romantic expressiveness. In the old days (1950s and earlier) Bach, Beethoven and Brahms were considered the top three masters of classical music. Somehow it seems that Brahms' reputation has slightly dropped in the public's opinion (while Mozart's fame sky rocketed).
![]() | Brahms: Two Rhapsodies, Op. 79; Piano Pieces, Opp. 117-119
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $8.46 Perhaps Brahms' music would be more popular if not for the modern public's impatient listening habits of wanting instantly accessible, easy melodies. I think Brahms' music sometimes takes a while to grow on you, but some of his compositions, like these piano rhapsodies (and also his violin concerto - see #25 above) seem instantly accessible, in my opinion.
![]() | Great Recordings Of The Century - Schubert: Symphonies nos. 3, 5, & 6 / Beecham, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra by Sir Thomas Beecham
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $7.44 I think that _the_ greatest tragedy in the history of classical music was the untimely death of the youthful Schubert. Listen to his symphonies and you'll wonder if he might have been declared the greatest composer of all time if he had lived longer and continued to compose masterpiece after masterpiece.
![]() | Schubert: Symphonies No.8 "Unfinished" & No.9 "The Great"
Buy used from: $8.99 In my opinion, the closest that music has come to expressing the raw emotion of a tragically bursting heart (not a wimpering broken heart) is the unfinished symphony by Schubert. Also see Mahler's tragic symphony listed below at #37.
![]() | Schubert: Die Winterreise / Fischer-Dieskau
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $4.79 I believe that this vocal music with a wintery program by Schubert is paradoxically capable of melting the most hardened and icy hearts because of the emotional beauty of the instrumental and sung notes. Although its sung in German, there's an English translation in the liner notes.
![]() | Clara & Robert Schumann: Piano Concertos
Buy used from: $4.29 Although I haven't found a professional review of this CD, and Clara Schumann isn't considered one of the greatest composers, I'm including it on the list anyway. Clara was a very accomplished pianist but, because of the social norms of the era she lived in, never rose to the heights of composing fame that her famous husband did. Here are two lovely piano concertos written by husband and wife.
![]() | Tchaikovsky: Piano Concerto No. 1; The Nutcracker Suite by Pyotr Il'yich Tchaikovsky
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $9.66 This is THE famous piano concerto by Tchaikovsky. You will probably recognize it if you listen to a sound sample. Martha Argerich is one of the greatest living pianists, and this recording is proof positive. The nutcracker suite on this CD is not the orchestrated version, but is the version for solo piano.
![]() | Holst: The Planets / R. Strauss: Also Sprach Zarathustra
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $6.98 Each of the planets is given a unique musical composition except Pluto, which hadn't been discovered yet in Holst's time. This CD also has a composition by Richard Strauss that was used in the movie "2001: A Space Odyssey." This CD is very enjoyable on the first listen.
![]() | Fauré: Piano Quartets 1 & 2
Buy used from: $13.00 For a taste of French romanticism, dignified culture, and just plain enjoyable fun, try these wonderful piano quartets written by Gabriel Faure and played exquisitely by Domus. I also recommend Faure's piano quintets, also played by Domus.
![]() | Mahler: Symphony No. 2 / Klemperer, Philharmonia Orchestra by Gustav Mahler
Buy used from: $15.99 Mahler predicted "Meine Zeit wird noch kommen" (My time is yet to come) when he contemplated a future in which his musical compositions would be understood and appreciated. Perhaps Mahler's current popularity is due to the cathartic effect of his symphonies and the yearning of the modern public to rise above the dreadful horrors of modern life. This symphony symbolizes new life after death.
![]() | Mahler: Symphony No. 5
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $5.99 This is perhaps Mahler's most famous symphony. The fourth movement (adagietto) contains some of the loveliest music set to strings ever written. Listen to sound samples of the fourth movement - you've probably heard the music before but didn't realize who wrote it.
![]() | Mahler: Symphony No. 6
Buy used from: $2.61 This is Mahler's "tragic" symphony. The energy of this composition is sure to get your blood racing. For a truly cathartic experience, listen to this CD in conjunction with Schubert's unfinished symphony eight (see #29 above).
![]() | Copland: Old American Songs/Canticle Of Freedom/Four Motets
Buy new: $7.98 / Used from: $3.40 Here's a charming slice of Americana written by the great American composer Aaron Copland. The songs are rather folk-like and really aren't overtly religious, even though they are sung by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.
![]() | Classical Music by Phil G. Goulding
Buy new: $14.04 / Used from: $0.56 I heartily recommend this book for those interested in learning about classical music. Eventually you'll form your own opinions and preferences, but this book is a handy guide for the beginner. Note: the book cover does not depict J.S. Bach, but mistakenly depicts his son J.C. Bach instead (the middle guy). See the top right of this web page for a correct depiction of J.S. Bach.
![]() | Looney Tunes - Golden Collection, Volume Two
Buy new: $49.99 / Used from: $8.24 SURPRISE! Just for silly fun try some classic cartoon parodies of the music of Strauss (A Corny Concerto), Listz (Rhapsody Rabbit) and Wagner (What's Opera Doc?). Volume 1 in the series (not shown) contains parodies of Rossini (Rabbit of Seville), Suppe (Baton Bunny) and Stokowski (Long Haired Hare). Vol. 3 contains a parody of Brahms (Pigs in a Polka). All but Pigs in a Polka feature Bugs Bunny!
