A fulfilling culmination of some of the most breathtaking piano music ever composed. Mozart's piano concerti are the most Mozartian music he ever created. Anda is a master who should be much more acknowledged! His playing is subtle and forceful at the right moments.

The finest piano concerto recordings on disc. Haskil's has got to be one of the most sincere playing styles of the 20th century, and all of her recordings are worth investigating. Restrained and in total control, the Perfect Clara is suited to Mozart's style: surface tranquility giving way to layers of meaning and sadness.

Karl Bohm was one of the best Mozart conducters, so this set of Mozart's best symphonies it a delight to find. Seeming to defy all other renditions, this has all the charm and devastating fire of Mozart's Da Ponte operas.

The string quintets in minor are a great surprise - and a rather neglected one - from Mozart's late years. The playing is superb.

A beautiful recording of the Clarinet Concerto in A that Mozart composed shortly before he died, as well as the lesser known Sinfonia Concertante rendered remarkably well here.

Written as a wedding present for his wife, this mass fits in well between Bach's B minor mass and Beethoven's Missa Solemnis. In the choral numbers the music is largely of a Baroque nature, while the solo parts revel in operatic overtones from Mozart's own day. As such, it is a moving overview of mass writing techniques over a long span of time.

A splendid version of the opera that launched Mozart to success. The music was famously described by Emperor Joseph II as having "too many notes." However, that is most likely erroneously translated. It should say: "A great many notes." Quite a difference. Included is Exultate, Jubilate.

Although arguably Mozart's most perfect opera (Kierkegaard argued for a sect devoted to Mozart, based largely on Don Giovanni), I've always had a difficult time judging between versions. While Jacobs conducting is highly dramatic and Weisser as the Don is believable the style lacks solidity.

But if neither of those is to your liking, try a true Mozartian: Fricsay. Quirky in some aspects, but definitely my favorite. The Commendatore scene at the climax of the opera is the most chilling version I've yet heard - and the way Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau sings it makes for a truly heroic Don Giovanni.

Either this or "Le Nozze di Figaro" is the best place to start with Mozart's operas, which are some of the best works in the operatic repertoire. This also comes with the complete libretto, so you can understand the heavenly singing.

Soloman's introspective biography gives accounts of Mozart's life that set it apart from others - it makes you feel closer to the composer as a human rather than just a genius. This psychobiography gives room to several astounding chapters on the music alone - can give new perspectives. Highly recommended, but read one other biography before hand so as to avoid confusion at time jumps.

This delves into many of the Mozart family letters, which reveal a lot about their relationships, Mozart's music, and, perhaps shockingly to some, his occasionally crude character (though always forgiven).
