![]() | Mozart: The Piano Concertos [Box Set]
Buy new: $63.98 / Used from: $35.40 A fulfilling culmination of some of the most breathtaking piano music ever composed. Mozart's piano concerti are the most Mozartian music he ever created. Anda is a master who should be much more acknowledged! His playing is subtle and forceful at the right moments.
![]() | Mozart: Piano Concertos Nos. 6, 17 & 21 / Géza Anda
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $5.95 A wondrous recording that must be the peak of perfection for number 17 (I'm still comparing 21 to other masters' recordings). No. 6 is also quite joyous and enjoyable on a peaceful evening.
![]() | Mozart: Piano Concertos No 19 & 27 / Haskil, Fricsay
Buy used from: $8.99 The finest piano concerto recordings on disc. Haskil's has got to be one of the most sincere playing styles of the 20th century, and all of her recordings are worth investigating. Restrained and in total control, the Perfect Clara is suited to Mozart's style: surface tranquility giving way to layers of meaning and sadness.
![]() | Mozart: Piano Concerto No.20, Beethoven: Piano Concerto No.3
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $6.36 Richter's version of No. 20 in D minor has always seemed the standout. The Romance is especially beautiful, and he transforms it beyond the pale repetitiveness of many other performers. Both of Clara Haskil's are excellent as well, though not in as good sound.
![]() | Mozart: Symphonien Nos. 35-41
Buy new: $21.99 / Used from: $10.48 Karl Bohm was one of the best Mozart conducters, so this set of Mozart's best symphonies it a delight to find. Seeming to defy all other renditions, this has all the charm and devastating fire of Mozart's Da Ponte operas.
![]() | Mozart: The Violin Sonatas
Buy new: $40.99 / Used from: $19.99 Truly the most heartfelt performances of these wonderfully varied works. There are many greats here, especially K 454.
![]() | Complete String Quintets by Mozart
Buy new: $23.98 / Used from: $16.19 The string quintets in minor are a great surprise - and a rather neglected one - from Mozart's late years. The playing is superb.
![]() | Mozart / Brahms: Clarinet Quintets by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $10.95 Brahms structured his chamber masterpiece on Mozart's to a large degree, and with good reason. Both intimate and highly moving, the Emerson Quartet manages a splendid performance.
![]() | Great Recordings Of The Century - Mozart: Clarinet Concerto, Sinfonia Concertante / Meyer, Vonk by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $6.27 A beautiful recording of the Clarinet Concerto in A that Mozart composed shortly before he died, as well as the lesser known Sinfonia Concertante rendered remarkably well here.
![]() | Mozart: Serenades for Wind Ensemble
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $8.88 This calming set of two masterpieces is beautifully played by the Berlin Philharmonic, without a conducter. The Serenade for 13 winds is very famous, and its elegant movements will undoubtedly charm!
![]() | Mozart: Great Mass in C minor /McNair * Montague * Rolfe Johnson * Hauptmann * English Baroque Soloists * Gardiner by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $6.99 Written as a wedding present for his wife, this mass fits in well between Bach's B minor mass and Beethoven's Missa Solemnis. In the choral numbers the music is largely of a Baroque nature, while the solo parts revel in operatic overtones from Mozart's own day. As such, it is a moving overview of mass writing techniques over a long span of time.
![]() | Mozart - Idomeneo / Rolfe Johnson · von Otter · Martinpelto · McNair · N. Robson · Winslade · EBS · Gardiner by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Buy new: $50.98 / Used from: $17.94 Mozart's first operatic masterpiece is also a surprisingly heartfelt opera seria. The form was dying out in Mozart's day, but he still managed to instill it with life. The plot, however, is disjointed. Gardiner's period construction is highly recommended, and gave the opera its first great renewal.
![]() | Mozart: Die Entführung aus dem Serail
Buy new: $23.98 / Used from: $14.24 A splendid version of the opera that launched Mozart to success. The music was famously described by Emperor Joseph II as having "too many notes." However, that is most likely erroneously translated. It should say: "A great many notes." Quite a difference. Included is Exultate, Jubilate.
![]() | Mozart - Le nozze di Figaro / Gens · Ciofi · Kirchschlager · Regazzo · Keenlyside · McLaughlin · van Rensburg · Abete · Rial · Concerto Köln · René Jacobs by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Buy new: $55.98 / Used from: $24.30 A fresh transition from some other out-dated "Figaros", this is a great introduction to the opera, and possibly the only one you will ever need. Conducter Rene Jacobs et al have given this opera back its youthful spirit, and for that we should all be grateful. The singing is sublime, and in many places perfection. I can't imagine "Figaro" any other way.
![]() | Mozart - Don Giovanni / Weisser, Regazzo, Pendatchanska, Pasichnyk, Tarver, Im, Borchev, Guerzoni, RIAS, Freiburg, Jacobs (Hybr)
Buy used from: $35.00 Although arguably Mozart's most perfect opera (Kierkegaard argued for a sect devoted to Mozart, based largely on Don Giovanni), I've always had a difficult time judging between versions. While Jacobs conducting is highly dramatic and Weisser as the Don is believable the style lacks solidity.
![]() | Mozart: Don Giovanni by Mozart
Buy used from: $23.47 A great opera, often called the best ever composed, by the great Mozart-Da Ponte partnership. Another great bonus is that this comes with the complete libretto--truly breath taking....The boistrous singing of the Don and Leporello are astounding, but the ladies are the best reason to get this recording. Most likely this is your best choice for this opera...
![]() | Mozart - Don Giovanni / Fischer-Dieskau, Fricsay by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Buy used from: $78.83 But if neither of those is to your liking, try a true Mozartian: Fricsay. Quirky in some aspects, but definitely my favorite. The Commendatore scene at the climax of the opera is the most chilling version I've yet heard - and the way Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau sings it makes for a truly heroic Don Giovanni.
![]() | Mozart - Così fan tutte / Gens · Fink · Güra · Boone · Spagnoli · Oddone · Concerto Köln · Jacobs
Buy used from: $39.99 Jacobs' revelatory Cosi deserves to be heard by anyone who loves Mozart! - simple as that. In many ways, this is Mozart's most interesting opera for voices. With only four main characters and two minor ones, Mozart manages to combine these voice textures in telling and inventive ways throughout.
![]() | Mozart: Die Zauberflote
Buy used from: $44.94 Either this or "Le Nozze di Figaro" is the best place to start with Mozart's operas, which are some of the best works in the operatic repertoire. This also comes with the complete libretto, so you can understand the heavenly singing.
![]() | Mozart - Requiem / Augér, Bartoli, Cole, Pape, Wiener Phil., Solti
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $6.85 Bartoli is dazzling here, and this is a LIVE recording from December 5, 1991 - 200 years to the day since Mozart died. It gives this recording an amazing respect. It is truly captivating.
![]() | Mozart: A Life by Maynard Solomon
Buy new: $16.52 / Used from: $7.38 Soloman's introspective biography gives accounts of Mozart's life that set it apart from others - it makes you feel closer to the composer as a human rather than just a genius. This psychobiography gives room to several astounding chapters on the music alone - can give new perspectives. Highly recommended, but read one other biography before hand so as to avoid confusion at time jumps.
![]() | Mozart by Wolfgang Hildesheimer
Buy new: $30.00 / Used from: $1.78 The highly psychological perspective of Solomon's may not be to everyone's taste. In that event, try Hildesheimer's. He gives an unconventional biography that restrains from idolizing him and dealing pragmatically with his flaws as a man. He also, in the act of a true biographer, refrains from pronouncing his views as fact. He invites the reader to imagine.
![]() | Mozart's Letters, Mozart's Life by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Buy new: $13.57 / Used from: $8.38 This delves into many of the Mozart family letters, which reveal a lot about their relationships, Mozart's music, and, perhaps shockingly to some, his occasionally crude character (though always forgiven).
![]() | Mozart: A Musical Biography by Konrad Kuster
Buy new: $160.00 / Used from: $2.11 An interesting look into the music as it developed throughout Mozart's life, Kuster picks a major turning point work to represent each year or so. Not much is given of the life, so this is suggested more for those wanting an analysis of the music itself.
![]() | Mozart's Operas (A Centennial Book) by Daniel Heartz
Buy new: $26.95 / Used from: $11.38 An interesting collection of essays on various aspects of the major operas, from Idomeneo to La Clemenza di Tito.
