![]() | Other Boleyn Girl by Philippa Gregory
Buy used from: $3.99 This was my first historical novel and still my favorite. I haven't loved all of Philippa Gregory's novels, but this is the best. The movie was awful but that's neither here nor there...

![]() | Nefertiti: A Novel by Michelle Moran
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $6.25 This was the first book I read about ancient Egypt. I had a teacher in 7th grade who was a hard core Egypt fan - and thus I stayed as far away as I possibly could. But this is amazing! For anyone who liked "The Other Boleyn Girl", this is somewhat the same type of story. Two sisters and their love/hate relationship in the eyes of the royal court. Great story all around!
![]() | The Heretic Queen: A Novel by Michelle Moran
Buy new: $16.47 / Used from: $3.75 This story picks up a generation after "Nefertiti". Another great story about characters I previously knew nothing about. I love the idea that the two characters were really a love match - and that it's written on walls from thousands of years ago. It's always nice when history actually lines up with the story!
![]() | The Pillars of the Earth (Deluxe Edition) (Oprah's Book Club) by Ken Follett
Buy new: $16.47 / Used from: $1.90 I can't even begin to describe how amazing this book is. I picked it up at the airport when I ran out of things to read on the plane. It's quite thick, so I figured it would last. At first I plodded through it, but about 50 pages in I'd find myself in the middle of another task and wondering what was going to happen next. I got really involved in the characters and their stories. Wonderful!!
![]() | World Without End by Ken Follett
Buy new: $12.87 / Used from: $5.87 Another great Ken Follett. What is really amazing about these books is the way they all connect. There are many characters and the story takes place over many years. But it always seems like something someone did 10 years ago comes back and has this HUGE impact on everyone. And you never see it coming! It's always surprising and great. A really gifted author.
![]() | Mademoiselle Boleyn by Robin Maxwell
Buy new: $10.08 / Used from: $0.01 The best Robin Maxwell book, in my opinion. Although parts of it are (so I hear) totally unrealistic, I still love it. This makes Anne Boleyn seem like a normal person, instead of the evil woman she is normally portrayed as.
![]() | The Last Boleyn: A Novel by Karen Harper
Buy new: $10.88 / Used from: $2.49 Another great book on Mary Boleyn. I really like how this one starts off with Mary being young and innocent and then follows her as she grows into an amazing woman who defies her family to marry the man she loves. Great book!
![]() | The First Princess of Wales: A Novel by Karen Harper
Buy new: $10.76 / Used from: $0.29 This is a great book and the only of its period that I've read. If you like the Tudor period but are bored with the same characters, give this one a try. It's wonderfully interesting if only because it's a story we haven't already heard 20 times.
![]() | The Fatal Fashione (Elizabeth I Mysteries, Book 8) by Ms. Karen Harper
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $0.01 This series is my quilty pleasure. What is great about them is that they don't rely totally on fact. Could that have happened? Maybe. But I love that Harper has taken the characters and developed them into these very interesting characters.
![]() | Her Royal Spyness (A Royal Spyness Mystery) by Rhys Bowen
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $1.86 A hilarious novel set in the 1920's (if I remember correctly). The character is witty and smart, and the plot moves quickly. A great read!
![]() | A Royal Pain (A Royal Spyness Mystery) by Rhys Bowen
Buy new: $16.29 / Used from: $0.78 Second in the Royal Spyness series. These sounds weird, but give them a try!
![]() | Rivals for the Crown by Kathleen Givens
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.01 I really liked this book, even though it wasn't what I normally read. The characters were interesting, and I liked how they tied in with each other. A bit of a guilty read, but still wonderful!
![]() | And Only to Deceive by Tasha Alexander
Buy new: $10.04 / Used from: $0.19 This series really took me by surprise. This was the first group of mysteries that I had liked in a while. The main character is very realistic - constantly changing and growing. The plots tend to be a bit dark, but the writer is very comfortable with her characters so nothing seems out of place.
![]() | A Fatal Waltz by Tasha Alexander
Buy new: $18.68 / Used from: $1.44 Another Tash Alexander
![]() | A Poisoned Season by Tasha Alexander
Buy new: $10.04 / Used from: $1.24 Another Tasha Alexander
![]() | The Uncrowned Queen: A Novel by Posie Graeme-Evans
Buy new: $11.97 / Used from: $0.01 These three books top the list of my guilty historical fiction. If you're looking for an easy (and not very accurate) historical fiction, these are for you. Lots of drama, but good story telling.
![]() | The Exiled: A Novel by Posie Graeme-Evans
Buy new: $11.70 / Used from: $0.01 Second in the series
![]() | The Innocent: A Novel by Posie Graeme-Evans
Buy new: $10.20 / Used from: $0.08 First in the series
![]() | Little Women (Signet Classics) by Louisa May Alcott
Buy new: $3.95 / Used from: $1.50 Of course, Little Women makes this list. Louisa May Alcott grew up in Concord, MA (about 10 minutes away from me) so I grew up knowing all about her life and writings. She was, and still is, an amazing woman!
![]() | Pride and Prejudice (Oxford World's Classics) by Jane Austen
Buy new: $7.95 / Used from: $3.59 By far my favorite Jane Austen novel. Probably because I read it first when I was about 9, and it was the first classic I managed to get through. I didn't really understand the whole story then - but I was so proud of myself! Since then I've read this book about twice a year and have it on my iPod. Love it!
![]() | The Birth of Venus: A Novel by Sarah Dunant
Buy new: $10.20 / Used from: $0.01 This is one of those books that is amazing, but still leaves you feeling like you missed something. I found the whole story (as well as the writing) to be very moving and vivid. Certainly worth a read.
![]() | Emma (Modern Library Classics) by Jane Austen
Buy new: $7.95 / Used from: $2.21 I read the other day that Jane Austen was very annoyed when her readers liked Emma, because she had written her as a character that people would be annoyed by. But I think we can all relate to Emma on some level. We've all been a bit head-in-the-clouds before!
![]() | The Lost Diary of Don Juan: An Account of the True Arts of Passion and the Perilous Adventure of Love by Douglas Carlton Abrams
Buy used from: $12.00 This was a really interesting story! I had never read anything about Don Juan before, and knew little about him besides the fact that he was somewhat of a player. But this book gives him alot more depth and really portrays him as a man instead of just a myth.
![]() | Zorro: A Novel (P.S.) by Isabel Allende
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $0.01 Who doesn't love a story with pirates, swordfights, romance and history? Great for a rainy day when you're stuck inside.
![]() | The Red Tent: A Novel by Anita Diamant
Buy new: $10.20 / Used from: $3.68 I think many people have opted to not read this story because they worry it may be too Biblical. But it's really not! Very moving story about a young woman who has to face some huge challenges.
![]() | Queen's Ransom: A Mystery at Queen Elizabeth I's Court Featuring Ursula Blanchard (Ursula Blanchard Mysteries) by Fiona Buckley
Buy new: $11.25 / Used from: $0.01 These are some more Elizabeth I mysteries. But what is different about this series is that Queen Elizabeth is portrayed as a somewhat ruthless woman. The stories revolve around Ursula, a woman who somehow finds herself playing spy for Queen Elizabeth. It's interesting to watch her struggle with her love of providing for her and her daughter - and her desire to live a normal life. Great series!
![]() | The King's Daughter. A Novel of the First Tudor Queen (Rose of York) by Sandra Worth
Buy new: $10.20 / Used from: $2.49 This is a good book, but I really enjoyed it because I had never heard much about the mother of the great King Henry 8th. According to this story, she weds Henry 7th in order to save England. I had previously heard that the two loved each other, but this makes for a much better story. It does move a bit slow at times, but still an interesting read.
![]() | Silent In The Grave by Deanna Raybourn
Buy used from: $0.01 This is a much darker historical mystery. Julia's husband dies during a party, and everyone assumes it's because he's been sick for awhile. Enter Nicholas Brisbane - a private detective who believes it was a murder, not a natural death. Enter the mystery. Really a great read, but still scared me a bit!
![]() | Silent In The Sanctuary (Lady Julia Grey) by Deanna Raybourn
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $0.01 The second in the Julia/Brisbane mystery series. Julia has been away in Italy with her brothers and is shocked upon return to find that Brisbane is engaged. Mainly because she thought they had a little thing going. Anyhow, there is a rather nasty murder in the sanctuary and someone in the party is responsible. But who?
![]() | Silent On The Moor (A Lady Julia Grey Novel) by Deanna Raybourn
Buy new: $10.04 / Used from: $3.16 This is the third in the Julia/Brisbane mystery series. It hasn't been released yet, so I don't know if it's good or not. But since I'll be reading it, I've added it to the list.
![]() | The Queen's Handmaiden by Jennifer Ashley
Buy new: $11.97 / Used from: $0.01 This is an interesting, breezy little read based on the life of Princess/Queen Elizbeth's dress maker. Again, the story is being told by someone on the outside of the Tudor family. This happens to be told by the niece of Kat Ashley, who was like Elizabeth's substitute mother.
![]() | Innocent Traitor: A Novel of Lady Jane Grey by Alison Weir
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $0.77 This is a great book, based on the story of Lady Jane Grey - who was forced by her family to be queen for nine days. Jane has always been portrayed as a weak little nothing, but this book gives her character and real depth. It's nice to hear the other side of the story.
![]() | The Lady Elizabeth: A Novel (Random House Reader's Circle) by Alison Weir
Buy new: $10.20 / Used from: $0.70 This is a good story, if only because of the actual topic. I didn't notice anything amazing about it, but if you like books on Elizabeth then give this one a read!
![]() | Mary, Called Magdalene by Margaret George
Buy new: $10.88 / Used from: $0.01 I've had some issues getting through Margaret George's other books because I find some of her characters rather annoying. But I've always liked her writing and this is a great book. Not overly Biblical, this story focus more on the people than the religion. Great read!
