Almost FamousAlmost Famous
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $2.00
(B) Works better as a story about a rock band than as a coming of age narrative, which never appeals to me much. Quite good, except that I don't find Hudson's witless rock skank terribly appealing.
The Haunting in Connecticut (Single-Disc Edition)The Haunting in Connecticut (Single-Disc Edition)
Buy new: $9.49 / Used from: $2.29
(C) The story to this haunted house flick is relatively interesting, but it suffers from modern overkill. Too many ghosts, too many forced scares, too long etc. It might've worked if it displayed any subtlety.
Black Magic (Shaw Brothers Special Edition)Black Magic (Shaw Brothers Special Edition)
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $1.98
(C) Early Shaw bros. horror movie plays too much like a goofy soap opera with black magic tossed in. It passes the time okay, though.
The MirrorThe Mirror
Buy new: $25.49 / Used from: $14.95
(C+) A relatively short, personal film from Tarkovsky ultimately lacks the human interest of Solaris, Stalker and Andrei Rublev. Apparently he needs 3 full hours to really draw me in.
Dr. LambDr. Lamb
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $8.55
(B) Another gruesome modern thriller from Hong Kong. Has the usual bit of inexplicable slapstick, but it's quite interesting and unsettling as a whole.
Point Break (Pure Adrenaline Edition)Point Break (Pure Adrenaline Edition)
Buy new: $10.49 / Used from: $3.17
(B) Has the most infamously ridiculous backstory in action movie history, yet it still delivers where it matters most. On the downside, I consider Reeves somewhat unjustly maligned as a whole, but this is not the film I'd use to make that case.
HorsemenHorsemen
Buy new: $19.99 / Used from: $1.47
(D+) It's rare to see a pure Seven ripoff anymore. Horsemen looks nice, but it steadily spirals to a painfully stupid climax and "twist."
Tales from the Darkside: The MovieTales from the Darkside: The Movie
Buy new: $9.49 / Used from: $3.64
(B) Fun anthology film has a surprisingly prominent cast. It generates the kind of charmingly straight faced silliness that defines much television horror.
OutlanderOutlander
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $8.20
(C+) Spaceman comes to medieval Norway and must join the Vikings to battle an alien monster. Has all the elements needed for a fun b-movie, plus 30 minutes of deadwood.
Orphan [Theatrical Release]Orphan [Theatrical Release]
(B+) Spectacularly outlandish thriller plays like a tawdry 70s exploitation flick with an A-list cast and budget. Impossible to take seriously, but still dramatically effective. It's a little slow to start, though.
Reign of FireReign of Fire
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $0.95
(B) Most summer blockbusters don't do much for me, but I liked in theaters 7 years ago, and I like it now. It promises post-apocalyptic dragons and delivers fully. The CGI holds up way better than most, and Bale/McConnaghey make fun leads.
Evil CatEvil Cat
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $9.15
(B-) Another martial arts/horror combination. This one's about a cat curse and reminds a lot of The Evil Dead. I prefer the more gruesome and bizarre entries, but this is still a pleasant watch.
Nature's GraveNature's Grave
Buy new: $22.49 / Used from: $4.19
(C+) Remake of the completely forgotten Australian eco-horror film "The Long Weekend." A bit better than that film and with gorgeous scenery, but it still suffers from the same flaws. (Too slow, cartoonishly evil male lead, whiny female lead, "nature" is the protagonist etc.)
Toolbox MurdersToolbox Murders
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $1.97
(C+) Competent enough slasher, but I'm just not as in to slashers as I am most horror styles. Hooper has made worse, but this can't help but remind us of what flukes TCM and Poltergeist were.
ShockShock
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $7.26
(C) M. Bava's last film has a typically thin, semi-incoherent plot, but his stylish visuals aren't on full display. Too bad.
The SacrificeThe Sacrifice
Buy new: $35.99 / Used from: $27.06
(C+) Tarkovsky goes all Bergman on us for his last film. Occasionally quite moving but mostly kinda flat. Tarkovsky again clearly values ideas over entertainment, but at his best he can work both effectively.
Le Cercle Rouge (The Red Circle) - Criterion CollectionLe Cercle Rouge (The Red Circle) - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $35.49 / Used from: $16.99
(B-) Stylish Melville crime flick is the epitome of hip, but it lacks human interest and builds rather slowly.
Lawrence of Arabia (Collector's Edition, 2 discs) - DVDLawrence of Arabia (Collector's Edition, 2 discs) - DVD
Buy new: $22.49 / Used from: $12.40
(A) The first half of this film remains some of the most epic, visually extraordinary material ever shot. The rest isn't as strong, but this is still a deservedly legendary film.
We're Going to Eat YouWe're Going to Eat You
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $9.46
(B-) More martial arts/horror/comedy from HK. The action is generally excellent, but it could use more horror and runs out of steam for a while in the middle. Directed by Tsui Hark.
Watership Down (Deluxe Edition)Watership Down (Deluxe Edition)
Buy new: $17.49 / Used from: $11.27
(B) I have the vaguest recollections of reading this as a child. It is indeed atypically adult and bleak for a movie with talking bunnies. We also learn valuable lessons, such as that bunnies are naturally fascist and militarist.
Le Doulos - Criterion CollectionLe Doulos - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $32.49 / Used from: $21.99
(B+) Uber-stylish noir from Melville with terrifice B&W cinematography and a nicely labyrinthine plot. The human element is a bit lacking again, but everything else works.
District 9 [Theatrical Release]District 9 [Theatrical Release]
(B) The allegory is a tad silly (though more complicated than most would have you believe), but at heart this is just a violent, exciting bit of action sci-fi. The film overstays its welcomes slightly, however.
SurveillanceSurveillance
Buy new: $19.99 / Used from: $5.48
(D) Ridiculous J. Lynch thriller is stupid, tedious and filled with irritating characters. It's perhaps not meant to be taken entirely seriously, it doesn't offer the viewer anything.
The Devil's TombThe Devil's Tomb
Buy new: $19.94 / Used from: $2.25
(C+) "The Devil's Tomb" is about as good as this kinda silly direct to dvd material gets. It's not good, but it's never dull either.
KatynKatyn
Buy new: $26.98 / Used from: $12.95
(B) A Polish attempt to portray the atrocities of the Soviets, which are uniformly ignored in American film. Elegant and well-made, if a bit dry at times. The massacre itself is quite unsettling.
Inglourious Basterds [Theatrical Release]Inglourious Basterds [Theatrical Release]
(A) A triumphant return for Tarantino after the mixed bag of "Death Proof." His style hasn't changed, but the WW2 setting freshens it. Terrific all around.
Once Upon a Time in China IIIOnce Upon a Time in China III
Buy new: $9.95 / Used from: $2.78
(B-) Reasonably entertaining Li film though again a step down from the previous film. It's a little heavy on the spectacle, rather than straight up action.
Spirited AwaySpirited Away
Buy new: $18.49 / Used from: $14.48
(B+) Fairly dark, imaginative anime. Nevertheless, if Miyazaki is the be all end all of anime I'm content in my inclination to shun the genre.
AdventurelandAdventureland
Buy new: $19.99 / Used from: $7.98
(B+) Another Apatow associate makes a romantic comedy masquerading as a raunchy comedy. Quite funny and with generally likable characters. Also, it lacks the stylistic dissonance of many films of this sort.
Hamburger Hill (20th Anniversary Edition)Hamburger Hill (20th Anniversary Edition)
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $3.73
(B) Originally ignored as overly conventional, this now makes it stand out in modern war films. A bit cliched, but well shot and acted all around.
The Loreley's GraspThe Loreley's Grasp
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $5.98
(C+) Cheesily entertaining Ossorio film feels much more like a Naschy film. Those of you familiar with Spanish horror of the era know what you'll get.
When the Last Sword Is DrawnWhen the Last Sword Is Drawn
Buy new: $18.99 / Used from: $11.98
(B-) Turns out Japanese Oscar bait is pretty much identical to the American variety. Immaculately produced and well acted, but a bit self important and melodramatic. Comes complete with gratuitous frame story.
