![]() | Twilight (The Twilight Saga, Book 1) by Stephenie Meyer
Buy new: $4.25 Although it may not be the best example of skilled writing, it gets them interested and has become a part of pop culture and is therefore a necessary addition.
![]() | Harry Potter Paperback Box Set (Books 1-7) by J.K. Rowling
Buy new: $50.85 This is beyond necessary. This series has gotten more non-readers to start reading than you would ever believe. Not to mention that it actually has some literary merit. I know of at least one college that now offers an entire semester class devoted solely to studying the Harry Potter series.
![]() | Holes by Louis Sachar
This may be a bit "young" for high school readers but is a really great read for those who are usually uninterested or those who are a bit behind in reading skills. Great to recommended for boys.
![]() | Speak: 10th Anniversary Edition by Laurie Halse Anderson
Buy new: $8.63 / Used from: $4.99 Slow at the start but usually grabs the attention of girls. You may need to be careful with this one due to the discussion of rape.
![]() | Peter Pan: Peter and Wendy and Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens by J.M. Barrie
Buy new: $8.00 / Used from: $4.85 This will always be one of my favorite books. J.M. Barrie's writing is amazing. It is much more elevated that one might think after watching the Disney movie version. Yet, Barrie is so playful and incorporates adventure that will appeal to both girls and boys.
![]() | The Wrinkle in Time Quintet Boxed Set (A Wrinkle in Time, A Wind in the Door, A Swiftly Tilting Planet, Many Waters, An Acceptable Time) by Madeleine L'Engle
Buy new: $20.46 Everybody seems to love this.
![]() | The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger
Buy new: $9.79 This is required reading where I'm from but it really was one of my favorite books from high school. People seem to either really love or absolutely hate this book. Those who can appreciate a book for it's character portrayals are the type that should read it.
![]() | Lord of the Flies by William Golding
Also required reading in my neck of the woods, this is another of my most favorite books of all time. There is something very haunting about this book. The imagery it creates in the minds of teenage students never seems to leave them.
![]() | The Giver by Lois Lowry
Buy new: $6.99 Even though this seems to be just a quick, easy read, the themes discussed are shocking and really pull students in to the plot. Again, it may be a little "young" for high school students but would probably be picked up numerous times for leisure reading.
![]() | Gossip Girl Boxed Set by Cecily von Ziegesar
Buy new: $21.77 Girls can go through these as quickly as gossip itself. Gossip Girl is a television series now, as well.
![]() | Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants / Second Summer of the Sisterhood / Girls in Pants (3 Book Set) by Ann Brashares
This is fun to read but actually tackles some pretty big moments in four adolescent girls' lives.
![]() | Beowulf (Signet Classics) by Anonymous
Buy new: $4.95 Again, often required but definitely enjoyed if not.
![]() | Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson
Buy new: $6.99 There's really nothing wrong with reading younger books in high school. Especially if you didn't get to read them before.
![]() | The Hobbit: 70th Anniversary Edition by J.R.R. Tolkien
Buy new: $15.75 / Used from: $15.00 I didn't actually like this when I read it but so many people do. So, it deserves a spot on the shelf.
![]() | Touching Spirit Bear (rack) by Ben Mikaelsen
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $3.18 A great story for boys that starts with a punk and ends with something entirely different. Very interesting. May also be good for girls.
![]() | Monster by Walter Dean Myers
Buy new: $8.99 The movie script format that repeats in intervals throughout the novel may trip up some readers but proves to be an interesting style to read.
![]() | ON THE BRIGHTSIDE, I'M NOW THE GIRLFRIEND OF A SEX GOD / KNOCKED OUT BY MY NUNGA-NUNGAS / ANGUS, thongs and FULL-FRONTAL SNOGGING (3 BOOK SET) (Confessions of Georgia Nicolson, Vols 1-3) by Louise Rennison
This, along with a few companion books like it, is a comedic take on those awkward years when boys lose there cooties and become a girl's sole desire.
![]() | Stargirl (Readers Circle) by Jerry Spinelli
Buy new: $6.99 |
![]() | This Lullaby by Sarah Dessen
Buy new: $8.99 Sarah Dessen is on my list of favorites for YA novelists. All of her books have been great and have a different tone than most of those girly over-the-top books dealing with teenage relationships.
![]() | Girl, Interrupted by Susanna Kaysen
Buy new: $10.08 Probably appropriate only for the older students. Still, it's a great account of an almost normal girl's time in and out of a mental hospital. The movie was well-done, also.
![]() | The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky
Buy new: $10.08 |
![]() | Go Ask Alice by Anonymous
Buy new: $9.99 Everybody should read this. And I do mean EVERYBODY.
