![]() | All Shall Be Well; And All Shall Be Well; And All Manner of Things Shall Be Well: A Novel by Tod Wodicka
Buy new: $16.46 / Used from: $0.01 My novel. The story of Burt Hecker.
![]() | Hildegard von Bingen: Ordo Virtutum
Buy new: $15.93 / Used from: $8.48 This is my favorite recording of Hildegard's music. Without these CDs there would be no novel. Best of all, it comes complete with a scary, screaming Latin Lucifer! Essential, stunning stuff.
![]() | A Feather on the Breath of God
Buy new: $21.98 / Used from: $6.12 Burt Hecker's favorite album of all time. A quiet classic. (Though, personally, I prefer Sequentia.)
![]() | Hildegard von Bingen: Voice of the Blood
Buy new: $7.98 / Used from: $4.88 Gory, bloodthirsty chant ... Nah. Actually, here's not a bad place to start an unhealthy Hildegard obsession if the idea of a screaming Latin Lucifer puts you off. Intense, almost hysterically calm music.
![]() | Early Music (Lachrymae Antiquae)
Buy new: $17.98 / Used from: $3.39 This CD is by the KRONOS QUARTET, not Jack Body. It's got pieces by John Cage, Guillaume de Machaut, Moondog, Hildegard von Bingen, Perotin, Harry Partch ... it's a new, better past. A reenaction of the highest order.
![]() | Messe de Notre Dame (Guillaume de Machaut)/ Ensemble Organum (Marcel Peres) by Gregorian Chant
Buy used from: $17.98 Machaut - with hiccups. A Hecker family favorite.
![]() | Gothic Music in Bohemia 13th-15th Century
Buy used from: $18.07 "The Bohemians have a stench. It's macabre. The women terrify me." - Burt Hecker
![]() | Arvo Pärt: Da Pacem by Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir
Buy new: $21.98 / Used from: $8.90 And can't Arvo himself be pegged as something of a medieval re-enactor? One of my favorite beards in contemporary classical music. This recording post-dates the completion of the novel, but I'm sure Burt would approve. Put it on the headphones: chant like cold water pouring into your ears. In a good way!
![]() | Gesualdo: Tenebrae by Carlo Gesualdo
Buy new: $35.98 / Used from: $20.92 Carlo Gesualdo (1560-1613) went on to murder his wife and his wife's lover: gangsta chant!
![]() | Inmost Light by Current 93
Buy new: $45.98 / Used from: $28.95 Lots of the novel was written with Current 93 egging me on from the background. This music is very important to me. Honest and out-there - a rare combination. Soul music.
![]() | Liberation by Jackie-O Motherfucker
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $9.99 Tristan Hecker's band, The Sound Defenestration Collective, was directly inspired by the music of this band and the Sunburned Hand of the Man. Gentle, elegiac chaos.
![]() | Rare Wood by The Sunburned Hand of the Man
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $2.42 Yo ho ho.
![]() | I Said, This Is the Son of Nihilism by Keiji Haino
Buy used from: $107.00 Get past the jawdropping guitar-as-a-wind-tunnel-or-black-hole section, and Mr. Haino gives us some gloriously disembodied, almost medieval-style vocals. Otherworldy in the same way as Hildegard von Bingen or very-late-period Coltrane or Aphex Twin's Selected Ambient Works Vol 2. This is one of the greatest single noises I've ever heard. Good for writing.
![]() | John Wesley Harding by Bob Dylan
Buy new: $7.98 / Used from: $4.99 Kitty Hecker's favorite album. Ideal for dish-washing.
![]() | Space Is the Place by Sun Ra and His Astro Intergalactic Infinity Arkestra
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $5.75 Tristan and Lenka have a poster of this album in their Prague flat. An inspiration to free jazzers and interstellar re-enactors everywhere.
![]() | New Morning by Bob Dylan
Buy used from: $1.20 Burt Hecker believes that this album has a particularly sinister cover. Watch out, kids. Uncle Zimmerman's watching...
![]() | Bach: Matthaus-Passion (St Matthew Passion) BWV 244 /Bostridge * Selig * Rubens * Scholl * Gura * Henschel * Collegium Vocale * Herreweghe (+CD-Rom) by Collegium Vocale Gent
Buy used from: $74.95 One of Kitty Hecker's favorite wild, wigged Europeans. Mine too.
![]() | Photograph: The Very Best of Ringo Starr (CD & DVD) by Ringo Starr
Buy new: $24.98 / Used from: $10.88 "Ringo Starr had been more intimate than sex" - Burt Hecker
![]() | The Black Madonna
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $4.03 "Ecstatic dancing (...) offers an example of medieval music therapy. Priestly dancing as an element of the divine service has now completely disappeared from the Christian rite" ... and a damn shame too! Can't get enough of this lately.
![]() | Sapphie by Richard Youngs
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $7.91 The singular, incredible music of Richard Youngs also accompanied a lot of the writing of the novel. I think we even had this one playing during the birth of my son. Apparently did nothing for the pain.
![]() | Human Animal by Wolf Eyes
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $1.75 Oddly calming!
![]() | The Royal Scam by Steely Dan
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $7.74 Nicely compliments Wolf Eyes. Well, the cover anyway. Sort of.
![]() | Bile Inferno by Iva Bittová & Vladimir Vaclavek
Part III of the novel takes place in the Czech Republic, a country I lived in - or a state of mind I was stranded in? - for the better and worse parts of five years. Beer, bad food, sour faces and ... Iva Bittova. One of the world's great talents. This double CD is her masterpiece. Worth any price you have to pay.
