![]() | Stomp 442 by Anthrax
Buy used from: $15.83 Although their popularity had waned by this time the music is again speed metal with a slight poppy edge to it. Hey, even Dimebag Darrell plays on this record!
![]() | Technical Ecstasy by Black Sabbath
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $3.95 A bit before Ozzy decided to leave the band. There was plenty of turmoil, but they turned out a beautiful yet dark album. Check out "You Won't Change Me" and "It's Alright" to see what I mean.
![]() | Dada by Alice Cooper
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $5.71 This album is usually harder to find and/or more expensive. In the 80s Alice kept some pop sensibilities with 'Constrictor' and this album. The lead instrumental is quite creepy and the last track is the album's dark pop masterpiece.
![]() | Astronomica by Crimson Glory
Buy new: $16.95 / Used from: $7.99 A lesser known progressive metal band. Extremely talented as most in that genre of music need to be. Although most fans prefer the earlier albums, I found this one to be more accessible. Almost every track is a winner and be sure to listen after the album is over to hear a long discussion about a UFO.
![]() | Stormbringer by Deep Purple
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $10.94 David Coverdale's vocals are amazing on this album. The title track alone is worth buying this cd. Glenn Hughes is also a great addition to this masterpiece on vocals and bass.
![]() | Prisoners in Paradise by Europe
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $4.64 Europe was always an underrated band that got thrown in with every other band that wore long hair. The majority of their albums are more glam rock than anything, but this album has Joey Tempest doing everything from screaming like a banshee, to sounding exactly like Jon Bon Jovi. A bit edgier than their previous two releases.
![]() | Selling England by the Pound by Genesis
Buy new: $12.98 / Used from: $4.64 Although a favorite of us Genesis fans, virtually unknown by everyone else (especially in the States). "I Know What I Like" was a minor success on the album, but their long progressive pieces are even more impressive.
![]() | Stormwatch by Jethro Tull
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $5.25 A fairly unpopular Tull release, but undeservedly so. It has great songs with a few gentle medeival-type instrumentals thrown in. Also the song "Dark Ages" is one of the band's best.
![]() | 11-17-70 by Elton John
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $4.01 Most people don't release a live album with only one or two albums out, but in 1970 that's exactly what Elton did. It is a very raw, intimate concert. Not the sound though, the remastering they've done since the 70s sounds great. An 18 minute "Burn Down The Mission" is the real showpiece here.
![]() | Journey by Journey
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $5.88 Journey's first album is probably the best of the records without Steve Perry. That's right folks, Journey had a few albums before Steve Perry was invited to join the band! This album leans more progressive with a couple of amazing instrumentals and Neal Schon rocking on every song.
![]() | Somewhere to Elsewhere by Kansas
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $5.75 Even in the year 2000, a lot of Kansas' original members were still with the band. That made this album an overlooked gem of that year. "Myriad", "Look At The Time", heck 90% of this album's songs are five stars.
![]() | House of God by King Diamond
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $3.24 King Diamond always had a little pop sensibility even with Mercyful Fate's nine minute long songs. This album proves that. Even though it was fairly ignored by metalheads it should be purchased of any metal fan who enjoys technical speed metal.
![]() | Solo in Soho by Phil Lynott
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $10.68 I admit when I first got this disc I didn't care too much for it, so give it another listen. He branches out from Thin Lizzy with everything from disco to reggae on this one. He gets help on the album from people like Huey Lewis and Mark Knopfler. "Tattoo" could've been his biggest hit.
![]() | Choba B CCCP (Back in the USSR) by Paul McCartney
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $4.57 Paul's infamous disc originally only released in Russia. This is the "I Saw Her Standing There" type of Paul again. On this album is nothing but raw, one take cover songs from some of the artists he admired. "Summertime" is still my favorite Paul song.
![]() | Joe Preston by Melvins
Buy new: $12.98 / Used from: $6.36 Even if you don't know who the Melvins are you could enjoy this album. I would call most of the music here ambient. The last 23 minutes especially would not sound out of place on a Tangerine Dream or Brian Eno record.
![]() | Pithecanthropus Erectus by Charles Mingus
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $4.04 The only jazz entry here, but I do love this genre of music. Charles Mingus is one of the greatest bassists of all time. I don't remember the jazz critics loving this album, but for us regular folks the title track carries one of the catchiest tunes in all of jazz.
![]() | Their Satanic Majesties Request by The Rolling Stones
Buy new: $10.97 / Used from: $7.97 You may have heard the song "She's A Rainbow" on that Apple computers commercial and it is a great song. However, this work of art is full of even greater songs. Considering how many wonderful songs these guys have, I still do not feel out of place putting "The Citadel" in my top 5.
![]() | Initium by Samhain
Buy used from: $44.90 A fairly difficult album to find, but if you're a punk or Danzig fan - find it now! The album does sound like it was recorded in a garage, but that kind of adds to it's punk charm. Glenn Danzig does an entire record of all brilliant hardcore punk songs. I don't think the Misfits ever got as good as this.
![]() | Look at Yourself by Uriah Heep
Buy new: $6.98 / Used from: $1.92 Initially I only bought this album because it was $4. I didn't care a lot for 'Demons And Wizards', but I figured another one of their albums was worth a four spot. After listening to the entire album I would have paid $100 to own it! It is progressive, hard rock, pop, a little jazz, these guys can play. This album proves it.
![]() | Hot Rats by Frank Zappa
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $6.99 Half the world knows who Frank Zappa is, but how many of you own one of his albums? Musically he's all over the place. This album is almost strictly a jazz affair though, with one hard rocking jam with Captain Beefheart. Mostly instrumental, the songs are extended work outs on the guitar, drums and horn sections. If you want to try out Zappa for the first time, try out 'Hot Rats'.
