![]() | Beethoven: Piano Concertos 1-5/Choral Fantasia - Daniel Barenboim, Otto Klemperer, New Philharmonia Orchestra & John Alldis Choir
Buy new: $34.98 / Used from: $9.95 Don't look at the stars: this odd May-December pairing of Barenboim and Klemperer creates a whole greater than the sum of its parts. Clear, detailed, unsentimental but beautifully phrased and suitably dramatic. The same performances come in Klemperer's bargain-priced symphony set.
![]() | Beethoven: Piano Concertos Nos.1 - 4
Buy new: $32.99 / Used from: $50.20 Beautifully played, classic performances of the first 4 concerti (the 5th comes in a separate package), recorded in excellent early stereo and well remastered.
![]() | Beethoven: Complete Piano Concertos [Australia] by Kempff
Buy new: $17.98 / Used from: $39.36 Kempff's version of the "Emperor" concerto completes his 1960's stereo concerto cycle. This set also includes an excellent version of the Triple Concerto, a very good version of the violin concerto with Wolfgang Schneiderhan, and the Romances for violin in fine performances by David Oistrach.
![]() | Beethoven: Piano Concertos Nos. 1-5 by Ludwig van Beethoven
Buy new: $46.99 / Used from: $12.49 A radical rethinking of the piano concerti by an outstanding French pianist and one of the most original conductors of the 21st century. Successful and provocative. Not a "standard" set by any means, but a great addition to your collection.
![]() | Rubinstein Collection, Vol. 57
Buy new: $7.98 / Used from: $10.77 Rubinstein teams up with Eric Leinsdoft and the Boston Symphony for a great cycle of the concertos in the romantic idiom. Expect rubato and a few finger slips here and there, none of which matter when the music making has this much heart and joy. This volume contains concerti #1 and #3.
![]() | Rubinstein Collection, Vol. 58
Buy new: $8.98 / Used from: $3.99 Volume 2 of the Rubinstein/Leinsdoft concerto set, with cercerti #4 and #5.
![]() | Rubinstein Collection, Vol. 59
Buy used from: $39.39 Volume 3 of the Rubinstein/Leinsdorf complete concerto set contains concerto #2 as well as a highly romantic and successful traversal of the Brahms piano concerto #1.
![]() | Great Recordings Of The Century - Beethoven; Mendelssohn: Violin Concertos / Furtwangler, Menuhin by Wilhelm Furtwangler
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $5.55 A very spiritual reading of this work by two giants of the romantic era in a recording which best balances performance and (mono) sound quality.
![]() | Artist Profile: Leonid Kogan
Buy used from: $78.00 Out of print, but it contains the best stereo performance of the violin concerto. Kogan's immense technique is put in service of a great intellect and deep emotion in this outstanding recording.
![]() | Beethoven: Violin Concerto; Mozart: Violin Concerto No. 5
Buy used from: $43.17 A more readily available recording of Kogan playing the violin concerto, this one in very good mono sound. The Mozart is also beautiful.
![]() | Beethoven: Violin Concertos; Bach: Partita No. 2, BWV 1004 - Chaconne
Buy new: $25.98 / Used from: $49.97 An outstanding performance of the violin concerto by two giants, energetic and beautiful. The sound is live concert 1959 mono.
![]() | Beethoven: Violin Concerto; Violin Romances
Buy new: $6.98 / Used from: $2.59 One of the best "classical" (as opposed to romantic) versions of this concerto. Fast tempos, lean orchestral textures, period-performance phrasing, and excellent stereo sound.
![]() | Beethoven: Complete String Quartets by Ludwig van Beethoven
Buy used from: $194.98 Satisfying performances of the string quartets that rise to a spiritual level of conversation in the late ones. The sound is early stereo but acceptable.
![]() | Beethoven: The Late String Quartets Nos 12-16 by Lindsay String Quartet
Buy used from: $74.97 Probably the greatest versions of the late quartets recorded in the stereo era. Fortunately, all of the Lindsay's supurb versions of the quartets have been reissued. You will have to buy the rest in single discs. Just search under "Beethoven + string quartet + Lindsay".
![]() | Beethoven: The Nine Symphonies / Maag, Padua and Veneto Orch
Buy new: $53.98 / Used from: $27.49 Distinguised, passionate and unfailingly musical performances of the symphonies by a great conductor with a small chamber orchestra. There is something "right" about each symphony, and each listen reveals new beauties. My current favorite.
![]() | Beethoven: The Complete Symphonies and Piano Concertos
Buy new: $56.49 / Used from: $45.00 Monumental, powerful and slow performances of the symphonies with a large symphony orchestra and featuring great instrumental details. The Barenboim/Klemperer concertos come with it. The price is a bargain.
![]() | Beethoven: The 9 Symphonies [Box Set] by Ludwig van Beethoven
Buy new: $52.98 / Used from: $34.00 Furtwangler was one of the great romantic Beethoven interpreters of the first half of the 20th century. These studio recordings do not have the passion and fire of his live recordings but they are in much better (mono) sound. The 9th symphony, which Furtwanger refused to record in the studio, is the famous Bayreuth performance from 1951.
![]() | Ludwig van Beethoven: The 9 Symphonies - Arturo Toscanini / NBC Symphony Orchestra by Ludwig van Beethoven (Composer)
Buy new: $18.97 / Used from: $16.75 Toscanini was Furtwangler's antipode, brilliant and visceral. These studio recordings are justly famous, although some, like the 7th, are too hard-driven. The mono sound in this reissue is fine.
![]() | Beethoven: Symphonies Nos. 2/4/5/7; Pierre Monteux
Buy used from: $39.21 Monteux offers committed, rhythmic, dramatic and very musical large-orchestra versions featuring quick tempos and lean textures in very good stereo sound. This set comes in two 2-fers. His 9th symphony is out of print.
![]() | Beethoven: Symphonies Nos. 1, 3, 6, 8
Buy new: $17.98 / Used from: $6.45 The remainder of symphonies 1-8 under Monteux. The versions of #s 1, 6, and 8 have never been surpassed.
![]() | Beethoven: Symphony No. 9
Buy used from: $2.50 Get Maag's spectacular Beethoven 9th to fill out your set of Monteux performances (if you don't buy Maag's complete set!).
![]() | Ludwig van Beethoven: 9 Symphonien by Gundula Janowitz
Buy new: $32.99 / Used from: $15.19 Karajan kept a copy of Toscanini's recordings next to the podium during these 1963 recording sessions so his orchestra would know what he wanted. The sound is great, the orchestra plays beautifully, and the performances are as close to musical depth as Karajan ever got.
![]() | Beethoven: The Nine Symphonies by Ludwig van Beethoven
Buy used from: $15.63 The best place to find out what the hubbub is about the new Barenreiter edition of the symphonies. Zinman follows the new versions strictly, using period-performance style with modern instruments. The performances are stylish, frequently powerful, and very well recorded.
![]() | Beethoven - Die Symphonien (Symphonies 1-9) / Abbado, Berlin Philharmonic by Ludwig van Beethoven
Buy new: $81.99 / Used from: $39.50 A more flexible version of the Barenreiter edition than Zinman's, with greater emotional depth and featuring a relatively leaner-sounding Berlin Philharmonic than usual. These are distinguished readings worth your attention.
![]() | Furtwangler Conducts Beethoven - Beethoven: symphonies no 3,4,5, & 9, Leonore
Buy new: $45.98 / Used from: $26.50 Not a complete set (only 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 9) and in live-performance WWII mono sound, but these are extraordinary, intense, provocative performances that have never been equalled. The sound is good considering its sources. A great supplement to any other recordings you may have.
![]() | Beethoven: Piano Sonatas
Buy new: $79.99 / Used from: $38.98 THE ultimate set of the sonatas, recorded from 1932-1935 and in good transfers. If you can stand the mono sound and the finger-flubs (especially in the lates sonatas), you will be greatly rewarded.
![]() | Beethoven: The Complete Piano Sonatas & Diabelli Variations [Box Set]
Buy new: $101.99 / Used from: $79.99 No one matches Schnabel for emotional projection and intellectual comprehension in the sonatas, but Kuerti comes awfully close, and he's more technically secure and recorded in far better (stereo) sound. These performances reward relistening.
![]() | Beethoven: The Complete Piano Sonatas
Buy new: $57.99 / Used from: $37.49 IF Kuerti is the emotional performer, Kempff is the classicist. While these performances are more contained, they lay out the structure of each piece with clarity and power.
![]() | Beethoven: The Piano Sonatas [Box Set]
Buy new: $66.99 / Used from: $38.98 Mature, insightful and lovingly detailed performances, many coming close to perfection.
