It may surprise a few listeners, but Uto Ughi's recording of these works is my all-time favorite--he's better than anyone that I have ever heard, including Milstein, Perlman, and Szeryng. To top it off, the recorded sound is exceptional, which makes this my primary recommendation. Regrettably, the asking price--$213--is ridiculous (look elsewhere).

My other favorite recording of these works is an Erato label release that Oleg Kagan made in the last years of his life from "live" concerts. These are some of the most impassioned, heart-wrenching, ethereal, and committed performances in my entire collection. Unfortunately, I don't know if this "Live Classics" issue is made from the same concerts--the Erato set is currently "unavailable."

Another incredibly brilliant violinist who died far too young--Rabin just may be the most gifted violinist that I have ever encountered. This boxed set--one of the treasures of my collection--includes a single recording of Bach's Sonata No. 3 for Solo Violin, BWV 1005.

Josef Suk is one of my all-time favorite violinists, and these recordings would be my first choice, next to Milstein, if I hadn't heard Kagan on Erato, and Ughi on RCA.

These are legendary recordings that have certainly stood the test of time. Milstein's technique still puts me in awe. Very recommendable.

If, like me, you are sometimes at odds with "original image processing," here is an earlier--perhaps less tampered with--DG release of the same Milstein recording above.

Extraordinary playing from one so young; although her Mozart Violin Concerto recordings have impressed me even more.
