Brokeback Mountain (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)Brokeback Mountain (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $16.99 / Used from: $2.44
1.) “Jack Twist" in BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN As a closeted gay rodeo cowboy, Gyllenhaal gives his most accomplished performance to date in a landmark film. With ample nuance, he infuses Jack with an infectious guilelessness, making us hurt along with him when he erupts into bitter sorrow over a life consistently denied. Won a British Film Academy Award and his 1st Oscar nod.
Donnie Darko - The Director's Cut (Two-Disc Special Edition)Donnie Darko - The Director's Cut (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $6.75
2.) “Donnie Darko” in DONNIE DARKO In what some regard as his signature role, Gyllenhaal portrays a moody teen plagued by nightmarish visions that could actually be foretelling. It’s a testament to his talents that Donnie- as well as this hybrid of a film- come across so compelling and memorable. Won an Independent Spirit nod for his breakthrough performance in what has become a cult classic.
The Good GirlThe Good Girl
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $0.60
3.) “Holden” in THE GOOD GIRL Between this and “Darko”, Gyllenhaal proved he had gift for playing likable nonconformists. His work as an alluring but disturbed store cashier, who has an affair with a married coworker (Aniston), is just stellar. He gives Holden an intense, uneasy quality that evokes a lonely, dislocated soul. Received a Golden Satellite nomination for his work.
Jarhead (Widescreen Edition)Jarhead (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $0.01
4.) “Anthony Swofford” in JARHEAD Playing a rookie Marine recruit during the Gulf War, Gyllenhaal embodies the palpable dislocation that results from youthful nativity succumbing to bitter understanding. As his character faces an existential meltdown, Gyllenhaal carefully reminds us that the first casualty of war- any kind of war- is innocence. Won a Hollywood Film Festival Award.
Zodiac (Widescreen Edition)Zodiac (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $0.98
5.) “Robert Graysmith” in ZODIAC David Fincher’s stark docudrama, detailing the crimes and aftermath of San Francisco’s infamous Zodiac killer, features more of Gyllenhaal’s skilled, carefully observed work. As a man haunted by the unsolved crimes, he exudes brilliant “Hardy Boy” enthusiasm that soon gives way to obsession and finally, paranoia. Teen Choice Awards nominee.
RenditionRendition
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $0.01
6.) “Douglas Freeman” in RENDITION The film has its share of flaws but Gyllenhaal still turns in a nicely restrained performance as a morally perplexed CIA operative. Interestingly, the best moments of his work are watching him actually NOT say or do anything (see the film and you’ll understand why). Scored a Teen Choice Award nod.
Moonlight MileMoonlight Mile
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $1.31
7.) “Joe Nast” in MOONLIGHT MILE Although response to the film was rather tepid, Gyllenhaal held is own opposite legends Dustin Hoffman and Susan Sarandon. His delivery of a monologue concerning his dearly departed fiancé is stirring and impressively handled.
ProofProof
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $1.00
08.) “Hal” in PROOF. On the surface it seems a fairly simple role; cute love interest of a conflicted college peer. But there’s more here as he reveals himself to be the protégée of the girl’s brilliant but disturbed mathematician father. Cute looking, he subtlety lets us know that under his character’s seemingly sweet-boy exterior may lie a few ulterior motives. San Diego Critics Award winner.
Bubble BoyBubble Boy
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $1.25
9.) “Jimmy Livingston” in BUBBLE BOY Okay, at first glance one would expect this quirky romantic comedy to be an insipid, unbearable mess (I did), but in actuality it’s not all that bad. Largely thanks to Gyllenhaal’s sweetly-comedic, dedicated performance that fully allows him to exercise his signature, irreverent playfulness.
October Sky (Special Edition)October Sky (Special Edition)
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $3.99
10.) “Homer Hickam” in OCTOBER SKY Not quite his breakthrough performance but early evidence of the fledgling great actor within. Playing a small town boy obsessed with building his own rocket, Gyllenhaal brings the perfect amount of boyish enthusiasm, charm and earnestness to a commendable family film. Revived a Young Artists Award nomination.
