Metropolis (Restored Authorized Edition)Metropolis (Restored Authorized Edition)
Buy new: $25.49 / Used from: $19.63
This Expressionist silent film by Fritz Lang was made in Weimar Germany. Based on a socialist novel by Thea Von Harbou, Metropolis is a cinematic masterpiece and classic of the sci-fi genre. With its Art Deco and Modernist aesthetic it is a truly visually stunning and arresting movie. Metropolis has been cleaned up and restored as closely as possible to its original condition for the DVD release.
Die NibelungenDie Nibelungen
Buy new: $32.99 / Used from: $27.06
Die Nibelungen is loosely based on Richard Wagner's epic Ring Cycle and ancient Germanic mythology. These two silent movies: Siegfried and Kriemhild's Revenge were made by master filmmaker Fritz Lang and are the first true fantasy films to be made for the silver screen. They are quite haunting, evocative and poetic and now on DVD one can appreciate their brilliance.
Picnic at Hanging Rock - Criterion CollectionPicnic at Hanging Rock - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $20.99 / Used from: $15.15
Peter Weir's dream like 1975 film is the supposed true story of the mysterious dissaperance of three boarding school girls and a teacher at Hanging Rock, in the Australian state of Victoria. Set in the year 1900 this film is very elegant, moody and impressionistic with its story of a pleasant outing in the sunny Aussie bush going tragically wrong.
The Dark Crystal (25th Anniversary Edition)The Dark Crystal (25th Anniversary Edition)
Buy new: $20.49 / Used from: $6.14
The Dark Crystal is for me one of the most enchanting and evocative children's films ever made. Jim Henson viewed puppetry as an art form to be explored and perfected and he suceeds with this groundbreaking film. Its truly delightful to watch and is good escapist fun.
Labyrinth (Anniversary Edition)Labyrinth (Anniversary Edition)
Buy new: $20.99 / Used from: $8.41
This entertaing and sweet natured film is certainly a pleasure to watch. Coming from the unique imagination of Jim Henson it is more light hearted and humorous than The Dark Crystal and is fun to watch on a rainy day. David Bowie as the "goblin king" is fey, debonair and as always, handsome.
The Cell (New Line Platinum Series)The Cell (New Line Platinum Series)
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.55
The Cell is a very disturbing and confronting film with its nightmarish yet beautifully surreal visuals. It is an exploration of the disturbed mind of a tortured serial killer who turns his innocent victims into albino barbi-dolls. The films heroine must travel into the killers warped subconscious mind in order to save his last terrified victim... and the clock is ticking.
Pan's Labyrinth (New Line Two-Disc Platinum Series)Pan's Labyrinth (New Line Two-Disc Platinum Series)
Buy new: $22.99 / Used from: $3.04
This enchanting Spanish language film is incredibly sweet natured... yet at times confrontingly brutal. Set in 1940s rural Spain during the rise to power of the Fascists it follows the imaginative adventures of a twelve year old girl, Ofelia. Pan's Labyrinth is made by the director of Hellboy, Guillermo Del Torro and this broodingly dark fairytale is his best effort to date.
Bedrooms & HallwaysBedrooms & Hallways
Buy used from: $4.98
This quirky British film is the tale of a group of blokes in a "mens group" exploring their bodies and sexuality to hilarious results. The line between straight and gay is blurred as the men begin to break down their masculine barriers, thus learning that love has no bounds. With its pointed humour Bedrooms & Hallways will invariably appeal to bisexual and maybe even "metrosexual" men.
The Doors (Special Edition)The Doors (Special Edition)
Buy new: $6.49 / Used from: $0.91
The Doors is a bio-pic of the life and times of the broodingly handsome, highly talented and charismatic lead singer of the Doors. Jim Morrison (1943-1971) was a highly temperamental and volatile artist who explored the darker aspects of the counterculture. The hunky Val Kilmer was perfectly cast to play this musical and poetic genius who tragically died at the peak of his career.
OrlandoOrlando
Buy used from: $48.00
Orlando is the film version of Virginia Woolf's classic modernist novel of a young gender-changing aristocrats journey through the centuries, beginning in the Elizabethan era and ending in the early 20th century. It is an exploration of gender identity and changing sexual mores in English culture, This movie will invariably appeal to feminists and educated transsexual women.
The Wicker Man (Limited Edition)The Wicker Man (Limited Edition)
Buy used from: $25.99
The Wicker Man is the tale of an uptight Protestant police officer investigating the disappearance of a young girl. He travels to an isolated Scottish island where the community has reverted to nature worshiping paganism. However the truth is rather different than he is led to believe... and he means more to this community than he could ever realize!
Velvet GoldmineVelvet Goldmine
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $5.25
Velvet Goldmine is the fictional story of gender-bending and self destructive rockers in the early 1970s during the fabulous Glam Rock era. It is a tale of blooming sexuality and bisexual experimentation among this group of carefree "pretty boys" who live by the hedonistic precept of "sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll"... and pay a price for their excessive lifestyle.
Robin HoodRobin Hood
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $4.07
This 1990s version of the Robin Hood legend is for me the most realistic, gritty and yet romantic made into a film so far. Patrick Bergen is well cast as the honorable, proud, fey and irrepressible Saxon nobleman cum freedom fighter. A British made movie it is much better than many other bigger budget Hollywood films made about Robin Hood and his merry band of outlaws.
Star Trek: The Motion Pictures DVD Collection (Motion Picture/ Wrath of Khan/ Search for Spock/ Voyage Home/ Final Frontier/ Undiscovered Country/ Generations/ First Contact/ Insurrection/ Nemesis)Star Trek: The Motion Pictures DVD Collection (Motion Picture/ Wrath of Khan/ Search for Spock/ Voyage Home/ Final Frontier/ Undiscovered Country/ Generations/ First Contact/ Insurrection/ Nemesis)
Buy used from: $139.99
These ten Star Trek films vary greatly in quality, some being exceptional sci-fi and others still being like glorified television episodes. I much prefer the various television series myself for there is more scope for character development and great storytelling. But still these movies fit in rather nicely to the Trek canon and are an absolute must have for any avid trekkie.
The Rocky Horror Picture Show (25th Anniversary Edition)The Rocky Horror Picture Show (25th Anniversary Edition)
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $8.60
The Rocky Horror Picture Show is the most camp, orgiastic and outrageous Rock 'n' Roll musical I have ever seen. It follows the story of an amoral transvestite and uninhibited bisexual alien stuck on earth who is out to gratify his every carnal desire... no matter what the cost. Made in 1975 this sinfully subversive movie has attained cult status and is as funny as the year it came out.
The Sixth Sense (Two-Disc Vista Series)The Sixth Sense (Two-Disc Vista Series)
Buy new: $26.99 / Used from: $2.53
The Sixth Sense is about a shy young boy who sees dead people everywhere. A skeptical but compassionate child psychologist reaches out to this terrified kid and teaches him to come to terms with his gift... and in the end learns a frightening truth about himself. This is a haunting and gloomy film that teaches us there could be more to existence than we can perceive or science can yet prove.
Queen of the Damned (Widescreen Edition)Queen of the Damned (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $5.79 / Used from: $1.99
This version of Queen of the Damned is the "sequel" to the timeless Interview with the Vampire. It is a fairly enjoyable cinematic journey through Anne Rice's dark and romantic world of charismatic, seductive, graceful and immortal vampires, and beautiful witches. But I must say that it is nowhere near the calibre of Neil Jordan's baroquely gothic 1994 masterpiece.
Fairy Tale - A True StoryFairy Tale - A True Story
Buy new: $9.98 / Used from: $2.85
Fairy Tale is the true story of two young girls during the Edwardian era who claimed to see fairies at the bottom of their family garden. This innocent claim sparked a media circus and an enduring mania for fairies in Great Britain. Fairy Tale: A True Story is an enchantingly lovely film for it conveys the openness, naivety and wonder of childhood in a sweet natured and uncynical way.
Lawrence of Arabia (Collector's Edition, 2 discs) - DVDLawrence of Arabia (Collector's Edition, 2 discs) - DVD
Buy new: $22.49 / Used from: $12.40
Lieutenant-Colonel T. E. Lawrence (1888-1935) was an officer in the British army who was stationed in the Middle East during World War I. This enigmatic and eccentric man was actively sympathetic to the Arab uprising against Turkish colonial rule. Loosely based on his autobiography The Seven Pillars of Wisdom the epic Lawrence of Arabia is a must see for any serious film buff.
Blade Runner (Five-Disc Ultimate Collector's Edition)Blade Runner (Five-Disc Ultimate Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $70.99 / Used from: $39.18
As one of the greatest and most influential sci-fi films ever made this tale of a cynical "blade runner" reluctantly hunting down awol replicants is moody, evocative and philosophical. Its great to see justice finally being done to this timeless film after years of neglect, and this definitive five DVD box set is a must have for any science fiction film buff.
Dune (Extended Edition)Dune (Extended Edition)
Buy used from: $11.89
Dune is the controversial film version of Frank Herbert's classic novel. It follows the story of young Paul Atredies on the harsh desert plant of Arrakis. After his fathers murder he and his mother are taken in by the native Fremen tribes, they see him as a messiah who will liberate them from oppressive Harkonnen rule. This atmospheric and surreal film is superior to the Sci-Fi Channel series.
What Dreams May ComeWhat Dreams May Come
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $2.21
This visually beautiful film starring Robin Williams is an exploration of the deep bonds that can hold two soulmates together... even after death, and rebirth. What Dreams May Come is a highly romantic and sentimental film, while it has its faults it is still lovely and warm hearted.
The Ultimate Matrix Collection (The Matrix/ The Matrix Reloaded/ The Matrix Revolutions/ The Animatrix)The Ultimate Matrix Collection (The Matrix/ The Matrix Reloaded/ The Matrix Revolutions/ The Animatrix)
Buy used from: $23.79
The Matrix Trilogy follows the metaphysical awakening and evolution of "Neo" from oblivious slave... to enlightened overman. Most of humanity are used by self aware machines as an energy source, being plugged into a vastly complex virtual world called "the matrix" few people ever question their reality. These films have breathtaking action, revolutionary CGI and a deeply philosophical message.
The Crow (Miramax/Dimension Collector's Series)The Crow (Miramax/Dimension Collector's Series)
Buy new: $15.99 / Used from: $6.95
The Crow starring the handsome Brandon Lee is a very gloomy, enigmatic and expressionistic film. With a thumping soundtrack it tells the tale of Goth musician Eric Draven, who one fateful night along with his beautiful fiance is brutally murdered by a gang of thugs. He comes back from the grave one year later to exact vengeance on those responsible for this random and meaningless crime.
Fantastic PlanetFantastic Planet
Buy used from: $26.94
I remember viewing Fantastic Planet as a child and finding it strangely frightening. This eerie Czech/French coproduction was made in 1973 and has an intense psychedelic quality. Set in the distant future on a bizarre alien world, "tamed" humans (Oms) are kept as pets by giant blue humanoids (Draags). Fantastic Planet is essentially an allegory of revolt against foreign oppression.
Girl, InterruptedGirl, Interrupted
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $0.70
As someone who has been diagnosed with "borderline personality disorder" and who has spent a considerable amount of time in psych wards, this film resonates with my experience. Susan Kaysen (Winoa Ryder) and the sociopathic Lisa (Angelina Jolie) form the centre of a clique of troubled young women who's bonds help them stay sane in an otherwise dehumanizing institution.
Monty Python's Life Of Brian - The Immaculate EditionMonty Python's Life Of Brian - The Immaculate Edition
Buy new: $10.49 / Used from: $6.75
Monty Python's Life of Brian is the most consistently hilarious and pointedly satirical film ever made. Set in ancient Judea during Roman occupation, humble Brian Cohen has been mistaken by "the three wise men" as the Messiah... setting off a farcical chain of events. This blasphemously subversive film ridicules both the blind faith of his followers and the political factions who manipulate him.
