Winterreise: Ranking my collection
By an Amazon.com customer
Schubert: WinterreiseSchubert: Winterreise
Buy new: $24.98 / Used from: $9.95
Soprano singing an octave above the published tenor version. Stark beauty, stripped of emotional attachment, painting a bleak landscape -- 4.5 stars
The Hyperion Schubert Edition 30 - Winterreise / Goerne, JohnsonThe Hyperion Schubert Edition 30 - Winterreise / Goerne, Johnson by Franz Schubert
Buy new: $21.98 / Used from: $15.28
Baritone singing DFD. The biggest value is the 100 pages of commentary by accompanist Graham Johnson in the CD booklet. Insightful -- 4.5 stars
Franz Schubert: Winterreise (Winter Journey) - Song Cycle, D. 911Franz Schubert: Winterreise (Winter Journey) - Song Cycle, D. 911 by Franz Schubert
Buy used from: $10.23
A dark baritone follows DFD, except taking Mut! in Gm instead of F#m. Thomas Allen combines with pianist Roger Vignoles for a strongly unified, dramatic presentation -- 4.5 stars
Schubert: Lieder; WinterreiseSchubert: Lieder; Winterreise
Buy used from: $14.49
Same performance as previous, packaged in a 2-CD set with a lieder recital by Arleen Auger. Great value -- 4.5 stars
Die WinterreiseDie Winterreise
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $7.94
Very nice. Prey uses the lighter part of his voice to convey the traveler's fragile instability, with sympathetic warmth from Sawallisch's accompaniment -- 4.5 stars
Schubert: WinterreiseSchubert: Winterreise
Buy used from: $29.94
Sounds like a young Wotan in self-exile from Valhalla. Bass-baritone coloring that strains at a few of the topmost notes. Vocals undermixed in about half of the songs, but still easy to love -- 4.5 stars
Schubert: Die WinterreiseSchubert: Die Winterreise
Buy used from: $12.99
An 83-minute, heart-on-sleeve live marathon. Yet Vickers has the breath control to pull it off, and I love his vocal timbre. Idiosyncratic pronunciation, a utilitarian accompanist, the constant rustle of the ventilation system; despite all that this might be the one set I rescue from a burning building -- 4 stars
Schubert: WinterreiseSchubert: Winterreise

Prégardien is the ideal bari-tenor to perform the published version: he has an easy top and reaches the bottom without strain. His money note is the plangent top G on 'Grabe' in Die Krähe. None better. One just wishes they had recorded this performance with a modern piano instead of the 1825 Viennese fortepiano relic. It sounds no better than my family's old Howard spinet -- 4 stars
Decca Legends--Schubert: Winterreise / Pears, BrittenDecca Legends--Schubert: Winterreise / Pears, Britten by Franz Schubert
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $5.69
A set to revere, even if you don't care for Pears's voice. This team records the Ur-keys from the composer's manuscripts. Therefore songs #6, 10, 12, 22 & 24 are performed higher than the published tenor version. In doing so, Pears opts for a lower, alternate vocal line in the final 'so elend nicht' of Einsamkeit -- 4 stars
Schubert: Die Winterreise / Fischer-DieskauSchubert: Die Winterreise / Fischer-Dieskau
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $3.59
What strikes me most is how right the tempos feel. At 71 minutes, this in the middle of the pack. Jörg Demus gives a steady, eccentricity-free accompaniment. The singer is a respected Schubertian; his voice is not exactly 'sobby,' but he sounds on the verge tears in many of the songs. A valid interpretation, but sometimes you need to hear someone who isn't Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau -- 4 stars
Schubert: WinterreiseSchubert: Winterreise
Buy used from: $9.99
A good transfer of the 1940s source, with a minimum of popping and surface noise. Acoustically, Hotter's voice is rendered in rich fullness, the piano a bit muddy behind. Some of the finest pianissimo singing recorded -- 4 stars
Schubert: Winterreise (Live from Wigmore Hall)Schubert: Winterreise (Live from Wigmore Hall)
Buy used from: $7.50
Goerne's interpretation is much the same as on the Hyperion disc above, with almost identical running times for most of the songs. Choose this CD if you are a fan of Brendel; if you are new to Winterreise go for Johnson's liner notes in the Hyperion release. -- 4 stars

A lyric baritone with an easy lower register sings the version for middle voices, a whole step below the published tenor version -- 4 stars
Schubert: Winterreise (Arranged for Tenor & String Quartet)Schubert: Winterreise (Arranged for Tenor & String Quartet)
Buy new: $16.99 / Used from: $8.90
The cycle works for string quartet because Schubert wrote much of the accompaniment in four-part lines. The performance of Wasserflut give the strongest argument for playing the dotted rhythm against the triplets. One wishes for a more stable tenor to really pull off this interpretation -- 3.5 stars
Schubert: WinterreiseSchubert: Winterreise by Franz Schubert
Buy new: $8.98 / Used from: $5.00
Accoustically dry; the studio padding sucks away all ambiance. 3.5 stars
Schubert: WinterreiseSchubert: Winterreise
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $6.40
Team perform the Ur-keys, except for Einsamkeit as published. They should have gone so far as to transpose some other songs up. In serving the composer's intent, Bostridge does disservice to his high, light tenor. He barely scrapes the low B in Der Lindenbaum. Andsnes's playing, as in Frühlingstraum, is sometimes more whimsical than wistful -- 3 stars
Schubert: WinterreiseSchubert: Winterreise by Schmidt
Buy new: $18.98 / Used from: $8.09
A businesslike 66-minute rendition in the same low-voice keys as Quasthoff and Hotter. Pianist Rudolf Jansen gives a cleanly detailed accompaniment, every nuance articulated. But he is not a patient player: many moments happen half a beat too early in the story. Slow songs are rushed, but fast songs drag for clarity's sake. Unengaging -- 3 stars
Schubert - Winterreise / Hampson · SawallischSchubert - Winterreise / Hampson · Sawallisch by Franz Schubert
Buy used from: $2.95
Singer and accompanist are not on the same page in this performance. Sawallisch gives an intimate parlor reading, while Hampson is in full-blown operatic mode. There is a sort of meeting of minds for the last third of the cycle, but it comes too late -- 2 stars

Schubert: Die Winterreise; Die Schöne MüllerinSchubert: Die Winterreise; Die Schöne Müllerin
Buy new: $12.98 / Used from: $44.67
With all respect to Hans Hotter's performance, this is a horrible transfer of the 1940s analog source. Most songs are nearly a semitone flat; Die Krähe is a quarter tone sharp. Auf dem Flusse is on pitch but apparently digitally stretched: it runs much slower than the Music & Arts transfer. Puzzling, since the 2nd CD of Die schöne Müllerin is quite good -- 1 star

The glamour shot on the cover says a lot: baritone Wolfgang Holzmair sings very prettily, but has no grasp of the cycle's darkness. Warning flags go up when he misses the altered melodic line in the third verse of Gute Nacht. And why am I so annoyed by accompanist Imogen Cooper? -- 1 star
