FactotumFactotum by Charles Bukowski
Buy new: $12.23 / Used from: $6.99
An easy read - took me a day. Anyone who has ever been out of work, or drunk, or both at the same time will get a kick out of this one.
Wonder Boys: A NovelWonder Boys: A Novel by Michael Chabon
Buy used from: $0.01
After Mysteries of Pittsburgh, this was a reaffirmation of my undying love for the works of Michael Chabon. Read him!
Whalestoe LettersWhalestoe Letters by Mark Z. Danielewski
Buy new: $9.95 / Used from: $2.99
Beautiful. Heartbreaking. The vehicle of a mother's love explained with a glimmer of insanity. Interactive in a way only Danielewski can be. You'll love it.
Showing Our Colors: Afro-German Women Speak OutShowing Our Colors: Afro-German Women Speak Out by Katharina Oguntoye
Buy new: $24.95 / Used from: $15.00
If you have any feminist inklings whatsoever this is a book to add to your entourage. If you don't have an entourage of books full of feminist constructs, start accumulating now! But seriously, it's autobiographical and it's serious stuff. You'll start to consider your personal history and it's role in constructing your identity.
Invisible Woman: Growing Up Black in GermanyInvisible Woman: Growing Up Black in Germany by Ika Hugel-Marshall
Buy used from: $3.33
If you took my advice and read Showing Our Colors, this can be the second book in your ever-growing compilation of feminist works. It's honest, folks. It's real. It's stuff everyone should read.
Girl With Curious HairGirl With Curious Hair by David Foster Wallace
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $4.83
My introduction to David Foster Wallace. There was certainly enough there to keep me coming back for more. This guy will get you writing if you just get reading. Favorite story (and by far the one that requires the most attention) Westward the Course of Empire Takes Its Way. There is something for everybody here.
Destined to Witness: Growing Up Black in Nazi GermanyDestined to Witness: Growing Up Black in Nazi Germany by Hans J. Massaquoi
Buy new: $11.48 / Used from: $3.87
Required reading for a German Lit in Translation class - I wouldn't rank it up there with the others. It's entertaining, but it didn't provoke much thought out of me. It's the life, made to seem like adventure, of Hans J Massaquoi starting before WW2 and going well past it.
No Exit and Three Other PlaysNo Exit and Three Other Plays by Jean-Paul Sartre
Buy new: $9.89 / Used from: $2.00
If you're not going to get the book, at least read No Exit. It's true - hell is other people, and you'll find out why. This existential look at hell is well worth your time. Thought provoking and entertaining - it's not even difficult.
An Anatomy of DramaAn Anatomy of Drama by Martin Esslin
Buy new: $14.00 / Used from: $0.75
Eh - more required reading for, you guessed it, a Drama class. Some of it is interesting. It's short and sweet, and apparently this guy's the official when it comes to this stuff. If you want to read this, make sure you are interested in drama, what it is, where it came from, why it is structured the way it is, and all the stuff you never even thought about being interested in.
The Broom of the System: A NovelThe Broom of the System: A Novel by David Foster Wallace
Buy new: $10.88 / Used from: $6.34
My first David Foster Wallace novel, and WOW. I couldn't stop reading it. It's everything a novel should be. Incredible stories intertwined with great characterization, dialogue - and enough of the absurd and quirky to keep you wondering. Included: a spattering of rhetoric; and, from the mouth of cockateils, a satire of the evangelical.
This Boy's Life: A MemoirThis Boy's Life: A Memoir by Tobias Wolff
Buy new: $10.85 / Used from: $2.00
It's a memoir. If you want to figure out how to write one, read it. Otherwise, unless you have some sort of insatiable urge to re-live Wolff's childhood, steer clear.
Oblivion: StoriesOblivion: Stories by David Foster Wallace
Buy new: $10.19 / Used from: $7.19
So I'm on a Wallace kick - but seriously, read something by him, please! More short stories - and all so different. You can't possibly read it without liking some of them. If anyone has any insight whatsoever in regards to "Mister Squishy"...fire away!
Light in August (The Corrected Text)Light in August (The Corrected Text) by William Faulkner
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $0.17
Well, it's Faulkner, and from what I understand, an easy Faulkner. I enjoyed it - so will you if you are interested in a commentary on racism in the south (come on, it is Faulkner). But, there's more to it than that, and the characterization is pretty neat, you see every one from every possible perspective.
The Last Thing He WantedThe Last Thing He Wanted by Joan Didion
Buy new: $11.86 / Used from: $0.49
I heard Joan Didion might be good. I'll never know. This one didn't cut, as they say, the mustard, and there's no mustard left to try again. Might be a good read if you like ketchup. Good luck.
A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering GeniusA Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius by Dave Eggers
Buy new: $10.20 / Used from: $0.74
Not many books will make me laugh out loud. Eggers cracked me up on more than one occasion. This is a great pick me up, and if you have ever been a teenager or a twenty something, had anyone who meant something to you die, and have any inkling towards sarcasm whatsoever, you're bound to enjoy this book. It gets a little dull in a few spots, but it kept me smiling through federal jury duty!.
Less Than ZeroLess Than Zero by Bret Easton Ellis
Buy new: $10.08 / Used from: $4.75
Total stars for this book? The title says it all.
A Million Little PiecesA Million Little Pieces by James Frey
Buy new: $10.85 / Used from: $0.01
I couldn't resist when I saw it at Salvation Army for 50 cents. I enjoyed it. I don't really care about the memoir issues, Oprah, etc. It's interesting, I swear. Take from it what you will.
House of LeavesHouse of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski
Buy new: $13.57 / Used from: $9.50
After The Whalestoe Letters I had to read this. My favorite part about this book? The Whalestoe Letters - which are included in the appendix. It's good at first...very successful with the suspense, but a bit anti-climactic for me. Once again - highly interactive. My second favorite part about this book? People's faces as they try to discreetly watch you read this in a public place.
Sons and Lovers (Modern Library Classics)Sons and Lovers (Modern Library Classics) by D.H. Lawrence
Buy new: $9.32 / Used from: $1.99
A must for British Lit, I suppose...a little too much for me. Paul loves Miriam, Paul loves Clara, but most of all, Paul loves his Mother in an all too Freudian way...but then I guess that's the point. What does sex do to self? What is the relationship between sex and love? Etc. Read it if you must. I would have been fine without it.
Franny and ZooeyFranny and Zooey by J.D. Salinger
Buy new: $9.88 / Used from: $2.48
Yes! Please read it! Please! You'll especially love it, I'm sure, if you are an English student...or find yourself exceptionally intelligent, or have a mother who doesn't value your bathroom time, or are looking for your path to God and find everyone around you a fraud. Great characters.
Howards End (Dover Thrift Editions)Howards End (Dover Thrift Editions) by E. M. Forster
Buy new: $3.50 / Used from: $0.95
Interesting if you are into that oh so boring British upper class chit chat about the outing to the opera sort of thing. Otherwise, not so much. It has it's ups and downs.
Mrs. DallowayMrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf
Buy new: $9.10 / Used from: $0.01
If you like stream of consciousness - read it. If you haven't been introduced to it yet, read it. Please do not attempt an autobiographical reading of sorts. Enjoy Septimus Smith. This book has it's Freudian aspects as well - but that's the time period we're working with folks, so expect it.
Lucky Jim (Penguin Classics)Lucky Jim (Penguin Classics) by Kingsley Amis
Buy new: $10.20 / Used from: $2.34
It's a fun one. If you're in college or if you've been in college, you'll probably like it. If you're thinking about going to college, maybe wait until you're there to read it, you probably still have such high hopes.
A House for Mr. BiswasA House for Mr. Biswas by V.S. Naipaul
Buy new: $10.85 / Used from: $2.46
If you like historical elements mixed in with your fiction, you'll like it. It's about the English Empire - colonialism...a family from India displaced to Trinidad, and the struggles one Mr. Biswas encounters through the ENTIRE span of his life. Not a quick read, but not too difficult either. Nice bits of humor sprinkled throughout.
On BeautyOn Beauty by Zadie Smith
Buy new: $10.20 / Used from: $0.01
It's Howard's End all over again, but it's contemporary. I started out not liking it too much because it was a rewrite, but it definitly picks up. Skill level: easy - and it is entertaining. You'll get a good look at modern racial constructs (from within, from without), the politics of university life, and a look at the struggles of one marriage. I'd read it again.
The World According to GarpThe World According to Garp by John Irving
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.01
Makes me want to read more by John Irving. Anything that could possibly happen and everything that couldn't happens in this book. One man's lifetime wrapped up snuggly between two covers, and it's worth your time!
