Shakespeare Book of ListsShakespeare Book of Lists by Michael Lomonico
Buy new: $14.03 / Used from: $2.99
This book's title doesn't even come close to expressing its entertainment value for Shakespeare fans. You'll find everything from a list of all 70 words Shakespeare used to describe the male genitalia to the 80 words that most often confuse modern readers. Indispensable fun.
MacbethMacbeth
Buy new: $17.49 / Used from: $10.44
If you've never seen Macbeth, this is a good place to start. Polanski's production is well done and easily accessible. This is the first film Polanski made following Charles Manson's murder of Sharon Tate, who was carrying Polanski's child. Bloody brutality reigns.
Macbeth / McKellen, Dench (Thames Shakespeare Collection)Macbeth / McKellen, Dench (Thames Shakespeare Collection)
Buy new: $12.95 / Used from: $6.60
Watch this version after viewing the Polanski version. With its minimalist set and modern costuming, this production is more demanding, but the performances by McKellen and Dench are unsurpassed. You'll want to leave the lights on as you watch; this is truly a horror story.
Romeo & JulietRomeo & Juliet
Buy new: $9.49 / Used from: $3.59
If you are seeing Romeo and Juliet for the first time, this is the production to start with. The story, the characters and the time period are all powerfully represented. More than forty years have gone by since this film was produced, and it still holds up.
William Shakespeare's Romeo + JulietWilliam Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $3.98
Watch this version after seeing the Zeffirelli production. Set in Verona Beach, California, Luhrman's film fuses Shakespeare's language with the violence of modern corporate gangsters. The film is fast and furious, infused with what sometimes feels like a magic realist style. The result does not please everyone, but DiCaprio and Danes both give strong performances.

Greenblatt has been faulted for taking speculation too far, but his exploration of the possible forces and influences that shaped Shakespeare make for insightful, satisfying reading.

Why oh why did this series have to end? The third season was astounding. You'll never see King Lear the same way again. Every Shakespeare fan should own this series.
Teaching Shakespeare: A Handbook for Teachers (Cambridge School Shakespeare)Teaching Shakespeare: A Handbook for Teachers (Cambridge School Shakespeare) by Rex Gibson

A must for anyone teaching Shakespeare to high school students for the first time. The Cambridge editions of Shakespeare's plays are also fabulous, including numerous photographs from real productions and thorough notes about difficult passages.

This is the place to start if you have never seen Taming before. The production is set in Renaissance Italy, and the performances by Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton are unforgettable.
The Taming of the Shrew (Broadway Theatre Archive)The Taming of the Shrew (Broadway Theatre Archive)
Buy new: $19.99 / Used from: $15.77
And this is what to see next. This frolicking version is done in Comedia del Arte style, a suitable choice considering that Shakespeare used elements of the Comedia form throughout this play. This is a wonderful way to introduce students to both Shakespeare and the old Italian comedic form. And did I say how much fun you will have?
10 Things I Hate About You10 Things I Hate About You
Buy used from: $6.15
Most of my students had seen this movie but did not realize that it was based on Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew. Although few teachers will have time to show the entire film in class, it beautifully demonstrates the universality of Shakespeare's themes and provides a terrific extra credit assignment.
Twelfth NightTwelfth Night
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $6.98
If you've never seen 12th Night, start here. Helena Bonham Carter's Olivia and Ben Kingsley's Feste set the bar high for those actors who will follow. The music in this production is particularly beautiful, though I could never manage to see Imogen Stubbs as anything but the girl that she is.
Twelfth Night (Thames Shakespeare Collection)Twelfth Night (Thames Shakespeare Collection)
Buy new: $12.95 / Used from: $1.88
This is the second 12th Night production to see. Purists will prefer this version, though it lacks the high quality soundtrack and editing of the Trevor Nunn film. Still, the acting is strong throughout and this production will provide unique insights.
She's the Man (Widescreen Edition)She's the Man (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $2.44
If you are teaching 12th Night to high school students, you must see this film. It is Shakespeare's story reapplied to the world of modern teenagers. Even though most of your students will have seen this, show your class at least one scene, discussing it in light of Shakespeare's story. Great fun.
Much Ado About NothingMuch Ado About Nothing
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $3.85
For those new to Shakespeare's work, this is a terrific place to begin. Branagh's production is joyous, accessible, and thoroughly Shakespearean. Branagh and Thompson are Beatrice and Benedict at their most lovable, and knowing that the two actors were married at the time adds to the magic.
HamletHamlet
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $3.60
Wait until you've learned to love at least four other Shakespeare plays before you tackle Hamlet, but when you do, this is a good place to start. Includes performances by Bill Murray as Polonius and Julia Stiles as Ophelia. The corporate setting works well.
William Shakespeare's Hamlet (Two-Disc Special Edition)William Shakespeare's Hamlet (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $8.66 / Used from: $15.95
Branagh did not cut a single line from the bard's great play when he produced this four-hour version of Hamlet. The production is insightful, the acting powerful, but this version is not for the beginner.
HamletHamlet
Buy new: $5.79 / Used from: $5.02
Few critics were impressed by Mel Gibson's Hamlet, but don't let them keep you from enjoying this production. Gibson's raw energy is an appropriate match for the part, even if he was not quite equal to the role's intellectual demands. Helena Bonham Carter's Ophelia is a haunting study in mental illness, and Glenn Close's Gertrude defines the part.
OthelloOthello
Buy new: $16.49 / Used from: $9.67
If you are seeing Othello for the first time, this is a great place to start. Insightful, accessible production. Branagh provides a powerful introduction to Iago, one of the world's great villains.
O (Two-Disc Special Edition)O (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $1.98
Here is Othello reapplied to the world of modern teenagers. Unfortunately, this production is probably too violent to show in public school, but a teacher might pull a scene or two to demonstrate Shakespeare's continuing relevance.
Shakespeare After AllShakespeare After All by Marjorie Garber
Buy new: $13.60 / Used from: $10.99
This is a must-have for Shakespeare lovers. Garber offers commentary on most all of Shakespeare's plays, providing insights into their historical context and poetic elements.

Asimov's commentaries on Shakespeare's plays offer an invaluable resource, despite (or because of?) his opinionated insights and cranky admonitions. His passion for Shakespeare permeates every word.
