The Lost World (Special Edition) - 1960 & 1925 versionsThe Lost World (Special Edition) - 1960 & 1925 versions
Buy new: $15.99 / Used from: $9.27
"The Lost World" of 1925 is one of the earliest examples. A showpiece for Willis O'Brien's special effects, it is rightfully considered a masterpiece. The Irwin Allen remake, using pet store reptiles in dino drag, is a lesser effort, but campy and fun.
King KongKing Kong
Buy new: $5.79 / Used from: $1.97
Another masterpiece from special effects artist Willis O'Brien, whose eponymous simian character is now a cultural icon. Remade at least twice, but never equalled.
She (Deluxe Two Disc Edition)She (Deluxe Two Disc Edition)
Buy new: $22.49 / Used from: $13.89
Noteworthy adaptation of the great H. Rider Haggard classic. Persistent rumors of a an alternate version in Esperanto with much more sexually explicit content appear to be unfounded, but who knows?
The Land That Time Forgot/The People That Time ForgotThe Land That Time Forgot/The People That Time Forgot
Buy new: $9.98 / Used from: $3.48
Largely derided at the time of their release as kiddie films with shabby dinosaur effects, Amicus Studio's retro fantasy tetralogy has aged suprisingly well in this deplorable age of cheap CGI effects. The first of the four, "The Land that Time Forgot", is the best - a masterpiece of the genre; its sequel, "The People ...", is the least of the four, but still worth a viewing.
At the Earth's CoreAt the Earth's Core
Buy used from: $3.33
"At the Earth's Core" is the second of Amicus Studios' excellent tetralogy. The fourth, "The Warlords of Atlantis", is still very difficult to obtain.
Darkest Africa [VHS]Darkest Africa [VHS]
Buy used from: $39.05
Excellent 1930s jungle adventure/lost race serial. A hunter and a feral child battle evil forces of a lost civilization in the heart of darkest Africa. Good special effects and miniatures.
The Lost WorldThe Lost World
Buy used from: $4.54
This outstanding version of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's novel takes significant liberties with the original plot, but in a thrilling and imaginative way. Great cast, script, and special effects (for once I can endorse CGI) make this a real treat.
Jules Verne's the Fabulous Journey to the Center of the Earth (1978) A.K.A. Where Time BeganJules Verne's the Fabulous Journey to the Center of the Earth (1978) A.K.A. Where Time Began
Buy used from: $22.90
A low-budget imitation of the Amicus Studios Edgar Rice Burroughs adaptations with much unintentional humor in the dialogue, this is still not half-bad. Once again, rubber dinosaur puppets and flabby giant gorilla costumes still trump CGI any day.
Mole People [VHS]Mole People [VHS]
Buy used from: $4.00
Campy 1950s Lost Race classic in which the intrepid heroes discover a lost underground city of "Sumerians" (with Egyptian decor) and their monstrous slaves.
Land Unknown [VHS]Land Unknown [VHS]
Buy used from: $2.99
Another delightfully campy 1950s flick involving a group of explorer who crash-land in an Antarctic crater where Mesozoic megafauna still reigns supreme. Features a combination of rubber dinosaur costumes and pet-store reptiles rigged up with fake horns.
Mighty Gorga / One Million AC/DCMighty Gorga / One Million AC/DC
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $4.75
"The Mighty Gorga" is an atrocious low-budget remake of "King Kong".
Unknown IslandUnknown Island
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $5.79
Fairly enjoyable yarn concerning explorers on a South Pacific island with dinosaurs. The giant gorilla is actually intended to be a giant ground sloth.
The Valley of GwangiThe Valley of Gwangi
Buy new: $19.49 / Used from: $12.99
Cowboys discover a lost valley in Mexico where dinosaurs still roam. Stop-motion effects by Ray Harryhausen are the highlight of this classic fantasy-adventure film.
Land of the Lost: The Complete SeriesLand of the Lost: The Complete Series
Buy used from: $89.99
A family of three enter an interdimensional portal, landing them on a planet where dinosaurs, hominids, and lizard-men ("Sleestaks") also dwell. The dinosaurs are brought to life by stop-motion animation. Ground-breaking juvenile television entertainment from Sid & Marty Krofft.
Missile to the MoonMissile to the Moon
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $3.89
A group of astronauts discover a subterranean all-female lost race on the moon. Deservedly regarded as a camp cult classic. Also featured are rock-men and a giant spider.
Lost HorizonLost Horizon
Buy new: $16.49 / Used from: $10.85
A Lost Race classic involving a motley group of travelers/refugees stumbling upon an exotic Utopian society in the Himalayas ("Shangri-La"). Or is it a Utopia?
The Lost ContinentThe Lost Continent
Buy used from: $18.53
Atypical Hammer film adapted from Dennis Wheatley's "Uncharted Seas". An assortment of losers aboard an old steamer stumble upon a lost civilization of conquistadores in the Sargasso Sea. Great special effects - including carnivorous seaweed, a giant octopus, and a battle 'twixt giant crab and sea scorpion - make this a classic.
Hercules and the Captive Women (1961)Hercules and the Captive Women (1961)
Buy new: $9.99
Hercules travels to a renascent and minatory Atlantis to save his pal Androcles from the clutches of an evil queen bent on turning all of humanity into zombified slaves. The demigod Proteus makes an appearance as a reptile-humanoid with whom Hercules does battle. One of the best peplum films.
Gold of the Amazon WomenGold of the Amazon Women
Buy used from: $64.45
Mostly mediocre made-for-TV film concerning two men who encounter an all-female Lost Race (the Amazons of the title). Anita Ekberg brings the only touch of class to this production as the cool and ethereal Amazon Queen.
The Last Dinosaur [VHS]The Last Dinosaur [VHS]
Buy used from: $999.99
Made to cash in on the success of Amicus Studio's ERB adaptations, this is actually pretty good. Features decent dino effects, a terrific theme song, and a surprising revelation concerning the life-cycle of ceratopsians.
The Lost ContinentThe Lost Continent
Buy new: $8.49 / Used from: $5.27
Not bad, if not great, lost-world-with-dinosaurs yarn from the early fifties. Special effects range from crude (the stop motion dinosaurs) to surprisingly spectacular (the climactic volcanic eruption).
