Pride & PrejudicePride & Prejudice
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $5.50
If you're new to the book and short on time, I absolutely suggest this one. If you're not new to it, I suggest it too--it's a picturesque and artistic interpretation of possibly the sweetest and most sparkling Jane Austen novel.
Pride and Prejudice - The Special Edition (A&E, 1996)Pride and Prejudice - The Special Edition (A&E, 1996)
Buy new: $19.99 / Used from: $15.50
In my opinion, both versions have their strong points--and this version's is definitely that it is not only longer, but also more true to the book--and it has Colin Firth in it!!
Sense & Sensibility (Special Edition)Sense & Sensibility (Special Edition)
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $5.84
This is the only version you'll ever need to watch--and trust me, you'll absolutely love it. There are slight technical differences between it and the book, such as Elinor Dashwood's age (Emma Thompson was 36) but these changes still stayed true to the message of the book
Sense & Sensibility (with Miss Austen Regrets) (BBC TV 2008)Sense & Sensibility (with Miss Austen Regrets) (BBC TV 2008)
Buy new: $28.49 / Used from: $41.81
I've only just begun watching this mini-series. But from what I've seen so far, I correct myself--while the 1995 version is the best Sense and Sensibility FILM to date, this most certainly shall turn out to be the best series of it...possibly ever.
Masterpiece Theatre: Northanger AbbeyMasterpiece Theatre: Northanger Abbey
Buy new: $16.99 / Used from: $41.57
The best Northanger Abbey film made so far--if you love the book, you'll love this movie. The actors are charming and go along great together--also, the costumes are amazing for the lower budget masterpiece films have.
Mansfield Park (1999)Mansfield Park (1999)
Buy new: $9.49 / Used from: $7.69
The better version of mansfield park--some dislike it because it changes the main character's personality into one more like Jane Austen's own personality--however everything else aside it stays true to the message of the book, and is a memorable experience in itself.
PersuasionPersuasion
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $5.23
The best version of Persuasion--captures all the subtle changes and showings of emotion between Anne and Fredrick. Extremely true to the book.
Emma (A&E, 1997)Emma (A&E, 1997)
Buy new: $15.49 / Used from: $6.95
Hands down the best version of Emma--Kate Beckinsale sparkles in the role, and all else falls into place. You'll fall in love with the book after watching this even if you haven't liked it as much as Jane's other books.
Becoming JaneBecoming Jane
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $3.00
Many negative things COULD be said about this movie--that Anne Hathaway's accent was horrible, and that it probably isn't historically correct--but in its attempts to shed some light on why she did not marry, and why she was able to write such wonderful classics, the movie does well--marvelously in fact.
