Let It FlowLet It Flow by Elvin Bishop
Buy used from: $58.99
Bishop's first Capricorn album had a major impact and helped me discover Southern Rock outside the usual Allman's records.
Joe Ely/Honky Tonk MasqueradeJoe Ely/Honky Tonk Masquerade by Joe Ely
Buy new: $18.98 / Used from: $9.99
Joe's first and second albums cannot be beaten for good-time, rockin' country. Started my journey into Butch Hancock, Terry Allan, Jimmie Dale Gilmore and the whole gammut of Texas singer-songwriters.
Doug Sahm and BandDoug Sahm and Band by Doug Sahm
Buy new: $12.98 / Used from: $7.64
I came quite late to the music of the great Doug Sahm. This album send me on one of the most satisfying musical journeys I have undertaken and holds a special place in my heart. I now own around 50+ albums (vinyl and CD) where Doug is a major player. He helped me discover Augie Meyers, Rocky Morales, Joe King Carassco and a slew of great Texas roots music musicians. Thanks Doug. R.I.P.
Big Boss Man/Down in VirginiaBig Boss Man/Down in Virginia by Jimmy Reed
I fell in love with Jimmy's simple, lazy beat through his Bluesway albums. Down In Virginia is one of my all-time favourite blues albums. He didn't send me on any particular journey of discovery except for his own stuff. Many have tried to replicate his sound but I am yet to discover anyone who matches or betters it.
For the Last TimeFor the Last Time by Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $2.25
This album changed my view of country music and sent me on a wonderful journey of discovery. Western swing, blues, jazz, pop; it's all here in spades. Wonderfully complex arrangements and absolutely superb muscianship. This album had a major effect on me.
Will the Circle Be Unbroken (30th Anniversary Edition)Will the Circle Be Unbroken (30th Anniversary Edition) by The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band
Buy new: $23.99 / Used from: $12.79
When this first album came out it gave me the motivation to take my guitar playing a lot more seriously. It also introduced me to the late, great Vassar Clements.
Hot RatsHot Rats by Frank Zappa
Buy used from: $7.37
This is a great Zappa album. Full of superb guitar playing and weird songs. Helped me discover Captain Beefheart!!!
Lost in the OzoneLost in the Ozone by Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $4.74
Aaaah, The Commander. They burned bright and hot for a short period but were a major influence. Got me into Asleep at the Wheel and others. Didn't take themselves too seriously and played with humour and skill. They got me into a lot of old-timey contry music for which I'll be ever grateful.
The Marshall Tucker BandThe Marshall Tucker Band by The Marshall Tucker Band
Buy new: $9.97 / Used from: $7.99
Their first 3 albums were a major influence. Southern Rock with blues, country and jazz overtones. A wonderful band with one of the best songwiter/guitarists ever to come out of the South.
Testament: The Complete Slash Recordings (1981-1985)Testament: The Complete Slash Recordings (1981-1985) by The Blasters
Buy used from: $29.38
Their first album (American Music) was a major influence. Got me into Dave Alvin and Gene Taylor. This album is everything they recorded for Slash and is a very important roots music document. An Essential album.
