The Great GatsbyThe Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald
Buy new: $10.08 / Used from: $2.91
This book is my LIFE. I read it at least once a month, and I own six copies in case of emergency. It's about so much more than just rich people partying, and it's moved me in so many ways.
A Farewell to Arms (Scribner Classics)A Farewell to Arms (Scribner Classics) by Ernest Hemingway
Buy new: $20.45 / Used from: $2.98
The saddest, most brutal, most romantic book I've ever read. Its examination of the psychological impact of war is unparalleled, yet it's also oddly spiritual. Hemingway knew what he was talking about when he said that love is a religion.
Franny and ZooeyFranny and Zooey by J.D. Salinger
Buy new: $9.88 / Used from: $3.88
I'm partial to the Franny section over the Zooey one, but they're both AMAZING. I absolutely love what Salinger says in Franny about people trying to be different and ending up exactly the same.
The Importance of Being Earnest and Four Other Plays (Barnes & Noble Classics)The Importance of Being Earnest and Four Other Plays (Barnes & Noble Classics) by Oscar Wilde
Buy new: $6.95 / Used from: $0.01
'Gwendolen, I must get christened at onceĀ—I mean we must get married at once!'To quote Oscar himself, it's a trivial comedy for serious people.
Camille: The Lady of the Camellias (Signet Classic)Camille: The Lady of the Camellias (Signet Classic) by Alexandre Dumas
Buy used from: $0.01
I'm not usually one for outright romance, but I'll make an exception for this book. It's so beautifully written, and far darker than the Greta Garbo film.
On the Road (Penguin Great Books of the 20th Century)On the Road (Penguin Great Books of the 20th Century) by Jack Kerouac
Buy new: $10.88 / Used from: $5.40
Oh, this book changed my life. I'll go to Frisco with you, Sal Paradise!
Madame Bovary (Penguin Classics)Madame Bovary (Penguin Classics) by Gustave Flaubert
Buy new: $8.64 / Used from: $3.32
If you're not sobbing by the ending, you're probably made of stone. This is one of my top five favorite books ever, and my heart aches for Emma every time I read it.
Wuthering Heights (Barnes & Noble Classics)Wuthering Heights (Barnes & Noble Classics) by Emily Brontë
Buy new: $5.95 / Used from: $3.98
This book is so dark and twisted, and I LOVE IT. It's about a sick relationship between two messed-up people and the havoc that their love brings to subsequent generations. Not a light summer romance, but still amazing. You'll probably need a flow chart to keep the family members straight, though.
Jane Eyre (Fine Edition)Jane Eyre (Fine Edition) by Charlotte Bronte
Buy new: $26.95 / Used from: $18.58
We can all see ourselves in Jane Eyre, though I can never decide if I like this or Wuthering Heights more. I'm torn between the Bronte sisters!
The Pursuit of Love & Love in a Cold Climate: Two NovelsThe Pursuit of Love & Love in a Cold Climate: Two Novels by Nancy Mitford
Buy new: $10.85 / Used from: $2.82
If I'm being honest, I prefer 'The Pursuit of Love' over 'Love in a Cold Climate'. It's a tragicomedy, and I love when my books get unexpectedly dark!
