By an Amazon.com customer
Elmer Gantry (Signet Classics)Elmer Gantry (Signet Classics) by Sinclair Lewis
Buy new: $7.95 / Used from: $1.67
A large, systematic take-down of religious hypocrisy that tells the story of the rise of an Evangelical preacher in the 1920s. As relevant now as the day it was published.
From the Land of FearFrom the Land of Fear by Harlan Ellison
Buy used from: $3.50
I've been working through some Ellison short story collections over the past couple of years. Fascinating science fiction, and one of the masters of his craft (regardless of the fact that personally he's a bastard).
God And The StateGod And The State by Mikhail Aleksandrovich Bakunin
Buy new: $13.22 / Used from: $8.85
Classic work of anarchist philosophy. Fractured and incomplete, and occasionally digressive, but still necessary reading for anyone interested in the subject.
Four Archetypes: Mother/Rebirth/Spirit/Trickster (Vol. 9i)Four Archetypes: Mother/Rebirth/Spirit/Trickster (Vol. 9i) by C. G. Jung
Buy new: $13.46 / Used from: $0.85
Fascinating and readable piece of comparative psychology from Jung.
Kitchen Confidential Updated Ed: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly (P.S.)Kitchen Confidential Updated Ed: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly (P.S.) by Anthony Bourdain
Buy new: $10.85 / Used from: $4.85
Funny, brash and honest memoir about coming up through the ranks of NYC restaurants. The breakthrough work of one of my favorite writers and personalities. I'm surprised it took me this long to get to it.
FlatlandFlatland by Edwin A. Abbott
Buy new: $21.99 / Used from: $5.67
Impressive novella that tells a story from the perspective of a two-dimensional being. Abbott's ability to visualize the life of geometric concepts is amazing, and his implied comments on our own limited perspective make for great reading.
The PlagueThe Plague by Albert Camus
Buy new: $10.04 / Used from: $2.67
Brilliant existentialist novel that tells the story of a French Algerian city overtaken by a deadly plague. As doctors, city workers and others combat the disease, they examine their lives reflected against the close proximity of death.
The Areas of My ExpertiseThe Areas of My Expertise by John Hodgman
Buy new: $10.08 / Used from: $0.01
Funny "compendium of complete world knowledge" by the ever-enjoyable Hodgeman. Great for those who appreciate this sort of absurdist humor, but it can be wearisome after awhile. Worth it, in small doses.
ValisValis by Philip K. Dick
Buy new: $10.04 / Used from: $3.10
The first of Dick's trilogy dealing with his own psychotic incidences. Writing himself into the book (sort of), Dick tells the story of Horselover Fat (an alter-ego for the author), a sci-fi writer who experiences a connection with a god-like being through a blast of pink light. Intense and thought-provoking.
Amusing Ourselves to Death: Public Discourse in the Age of Show BusinessAmusing Ourselves to Death: Public Discourse in the Age of Show Business by Neil Postman
Buy new: $9.75 / Used from: $4.45
An interesting critique of television's effect on our way of viewing the world. Some of the references are obviously outdated and some of the predictions didn't quite come to pass, but the general concept is solid. Necessary reading for comm theory junkies and cultural critics.
Acres and PainsAcres and Pains by S. J. Perelman
Buy new: $12.95 / Used from: $1.65
Perelman is one of my favorite humor writers. This, an account of the various problems he encounters owning a small farm in Pennsylvania, would make perfect introduction to his works. It's short, but packed with more comic invention and wordplay than any work twice its length you would care to name.
Island (Perennial Classics)Island (Perennial Classics) by Aldous Huxley
Buy new: $10.19 / Used from: $4.39
A reverse of Huxley's "Brave New World," this one concerning a small utopia of peace and intelligence destroyed by the modern world. No real characters and the barest plot, but Huxley's ideas are worth reading.
Donovan's BrainDonovan's Brain by Curt Siodmak
Buy new: $17.56 / Used from: $2.98
Nice little piece of classic science fiction, heavy on mad-scientist craziness an weird happenings. A good read with some spooky moments.
The Essential Ken Wilber: An Introductory Reader. The Essential Ken Wilber: An Introductory Reader. by Ken Wilber
Buy new: $12.71 / Used from: $3.40
An excellent and readable overview of Wilber's work, taking selections from his writings through the late 1970s through the mid 1990s. The subject matter ranges from psychology to spirituality to meditation to mysticism. A solid primary reader for anyone interested in these topics. Especially good for people who generally find spirituality discussions distasteful.
The Sheltering Sky (P.S.)The Sheltering Sky (P.S.) by Paul Bowles
Buy new: $10.19 / Used from: $4.00
Interesting bit of travel fiction concerning a couples' trip through North Africa in the 1950s, a trip that ends in tragedy and self-destruction. Full of pointed introspection, self-obsession and fascinating character studies.
Synchronicity: An Acausal Connecting Principle (Vol. 8)Synchronicity: An Acausal Connecting Principle (Vol. 8) by C. G. Jung
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $4.23
One of Jung's parapsychology works, this one concerning the search for an underlying principle that will explain "meaningful coincidence." Jung's metaphysical ideas about the nature of time are interesting, but the extended explanation of an experiment to prove his findings is truly dull, not to mention scientifically dubious. Great for fans, but not the place to start with Jung.
Overnight to Many Distant Cities (Contemporary American Fiction)Overnight to Many Distant Cities (Contemporary American Fiction) by Donald Barthelme
Buy used from: $0.01
After working through the "greatest hits" collections "60 stories" and "40 Stories" I've started picking up Barthelme's original collections, which are mostly out of print. While his style takes some getting used to, his sharp observation and wicked sense of humor make almost anything by him worth reading.
Signs and Meaning in the Cinema, New and Enlarged EditionSigns and Meaning in the Cinema, New and Enlarged Edition by Peter Wollen
Buy new: $17.16 / Used from: $4.29
Interesting analysis of semiotics in relation to film. Starts with chapters on Eisenstein and the auteur theory before moving into the prime semiotic discussion. Thick going if you aren't familiar with art theory and art cinema, but a worthwhile read if you are.
Cold Comfort Farm (Penguin Classics Deluxe Edition)Cold Comfort Farm (Penguin Classics Deluxe Edition) by Stella Gibbons
Buy new: $10.20 / Used from: $4.04
Funny satire of a particularly depressing form of British gothic. A bright, fashionable young woman goes to live with relatives in the country. Her country cousins are a depressing lot suffering from every cliche imaginable, right down to the mad old woman in the attic. The young woman goes to work fixing up their messes, breaking the ennui in a hilarious manner. Light, funny and engaging.
At Swim-Two-Birds (John F. Byrne Irish Literature Series)At Swim-Two-Birds (John F. Byrne Irish Literature Series) by Flann O'Brien
Buy new: $10.04 / Used from: $4.89
Brilliant Irish modernist/almost post-modernist novel. Tells the story of a college student who is writing a book about an author who is writing a book whose characters all revolt against him. Satirical, beautifully written and often overwhelming.
Making Money (Discworld Novels)Making Money (Discworld Novels) by Terry Pratchett
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $4.00
I've run out of kind things to say about Pratchett's "Discworld" novels. A good dozen of the books in the series are in constant competition for the "funniest thing I have ever read" title. This isn't an out-and-out classic, but Pratchett's take on monetary policy is clever and very engaging.
Towing Jehovah (Harvest Book)Towing Jehovah (Harvest Book) by James Morrow
Buy new: $10.08 / Used from: $0.65
I'm reading this trilogy over the summer as part of my book club. Concerns the two-mile long corpse of God falling to earth. The Vatican hires a disgraced tanker captain to haul it to a final resting place in the arctic. Dark, biting and brilliant, as well as containing some beautiful passages. Good start to the series.
The Bog People: Iron Age Man Preserved (New York Review Books Classics)The Bog People: Iron Age Man Preserved (New York Review Books Classics) by P.V. Glob
Buy new: $13.22 / Used from: $2.98
A book of popular archeology that examines the various discoveries of Iron Age bodies found in bogs around Northern Europe. The focus on minutia pays off as Glob builds up to introducing theories and ideas about the lives of these well-preserved corpses and the significance of their deaths.
Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human CadaversStiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers by Mary Roach
Buy new: $9.86 / Used from: $2.25
Very entertaining bit of research in the uses of human cadavers, both in modern times and through history. The subject matter is morbid, but Roach has a light touch and an engagingly quirky style that makes it all very readable.
Three Men in a Boat: (To Say Nothing of the Dog) (Dover Value Editions)Three Men in a Boat: (To Say Nothing of the Dog) (Dover Value Editions) by Jerome K. Jerome
Buy new: $5.95 / Used from: $2.74
Classic bit of British humor about a boating trip up the Thames. Goofy, witty and enjoyable. A nice break from the streak of corpse books I've been reading this summer.
Fantomas (Dodo Press)Fantomas (Dodo Press) by Marcel Allain
Buy new: $23.39 / Used from: $24.62
Classic French pulp fiction about the hunt for a mysterious criminal who takes on and sheds identities so frequently it is never clear who he really is, if anyone. Very pulpy and occasionally wooden, but highly entertaining.
Blameless in AbaddonBlameless in Abaddon by James Morrow
Buy new: $17.71 / Used from: $2.00
The second in the "Godhead" trilogy, which deals with what happens to humanity when the literally corpse of god falls to Earth. In this one, a modern-day Job puts the comatose body on trial for crimes against humanity, with much subsequent theological debate and dark humor. Not as rollicking as the first entry, but more intellectually stimulating (if a less gripping read).
Wayward Puritans: A Study in the Sociology of Deviance, Classic EditionWayward Puritans: A Study in the Sociology of Deviance, Classic Edition by Kai T. Erikson
Buy new: $37.90 / Used from: $14.63
A sociological study that uses the history of the Massachusetts Bay colony to advance ideas about the purpose and frequency of "deviant" behavior in a society. The ideas and the history of the book are thought-provoking, though I don't know how much solid evidence can be gleaned from its 300 year old data set.
The Eternal FootmanThe Eternal Footman by James Morrow
Buy new: $19.00 / Used from: $7.97
The conclusion to Morrow's "Godhead" trilogy and the weakest of the bunch. Nihilism takes the form of a literal physiological plague. The survivors search for meaning and cures while looking for a way to rebuild itself. Epic, interesting, but rushed in its construction and not as forceful in its points as the previous entries. Still, a worthwhile conclusion.
Sink the BismarkSink the Bismark by C S Forester
Buy used from: $7.95
Short historical narrative detailing the last nine days of the German battleship "Bismark," which nearly ended Britain's naval superiority during WWII. Exciting, yet extremely brief, skimping on details wherever possible.
Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified SinnerPrivate Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner by James Hogg
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $8.00
One of the classics of Scottish literature. Tells the story of a religious young man who falls under the influence of a dark stranger. The stranger pumps up the young man's fundamentalist Calvinism to the point where he is convinced it is just and right to murder his brother and mother. Touches of fantasy, folklore and the Gothic abound.
Housekeeping: A NovelHousekeeping: A Novel by Marilynne Robinson
Buy new: $10.08 / Used from: $1.74
Beautifully written story of a pair of sisters and their lives moving through a family marked by tragedy. Scenic, thoughtful and lyrical.
Consider PhlebasConsider Phlebas by Iain M. Banks
Buy new: $10.19 / Used from: $3.47
Interesting space opera that tells the tale of an agent in an intergalactic war. Rollicking and thoughtful science fiction.
Unspeakable Practices, Unnatural ActsUnspeakable Practices, Unnatural Acts by Donald Barthelme
Buy used from: $3.96
Another of Barthelme's original short story collections. Full of classics such as "The Balloon" and "Indian Uprising." His stories sometimes feel as if they were written entirely by right-side of his brain, making strange connections that are missing the logical deduction that ties them together. Brilliant stuff.
Kafka on the ShoreKafka on the Shore by Haruki Murakami
Buy new: $10.20 / Used from: $4.50
I like Murakami's novels (the two that I've read now, anyway) but I've never been as gung ho as other people seem to be. This mix of magical realism and coming-of-age is a fascinating read, but it's not quite a classic.
Wieland: Or the Transformation: An American TaleWieland: Or the Transformation: An American Tale by Charles Brockden Brown
Buy new: $11.66 / Used from: $6.75
Classic American gothic novel that tells a tale of deceit, religious fervor and moral collapse. Contains all of the melodrama inherent in the gothic genre, but is also a cerebral and well-wrought literary work.
