![]() | The Black Cat
Buy used from: $2.25 (B-) An underappreaciated Fulci effort. I'm one of those rare people who enjoys Fulci's stylistic quirks more than his violence, so this one works out fine for me.
![]() | David Lynch's Inland Empire (Limited Edition Two-Disc Set)
Buy new: $17.49 / Used from: $7.99 (B-) Has plenty of individually striking scenes, but it strains under its lengthy obtuseness, even by Lynch standards. Also, it suffers from a 'been there done that' vibe, since it's nothing we ain't seen from Lynch before.
![]() | Hatchet for the Honeymoon - 1969
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $6.18 (B-) Bava film has a truly bizarre plot, mixture of psycho-thiller and supernatural horror. It doesn't make that much sense, but it holds your attention and has Bava's typical style.
![]() | Manhattan Baby
Buy new: $9.95 / Used from: $4.97 (C-) Virtual self-parody from Fulci, with a truly dull, incoherent plot.
![]() | The Hidden
Buy used from: $5.38 (B+) Terrifically entertaining b-movie mix of cop thriller and sci-fi. Finds just the right balance of humor and seriousness.
![]() | Aenigma
Buy used from: $17.09 (C-) Another very bad Fulci film. It's not as dull as "Manhattan Baby", but it's arguably stupider. "The Black Cat" made me think maybe some of his lesser known films were better than I'd heard. Doesn't seem to be true.
![]() | The Black Belly of the Tarantula
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $6.90 (B) As usual, the mystery is dumb, but this is a nasty, stylish giallo with good kill scenes and some atypically interesting characters.
![]() | La Dolce Vita (2-Disc Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $23.99 / Used from: $15.75 (C+) Has a few effective scenes and some thematic depth, but it's also pretty damn boring a lot of the time. I just suspect I ain't much of an art film guy.
![]() | Downfall
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $4.90 (A-) Harrowing, controversial film of Hitler's last days. Extremely bleak and sure to bring out conflicted feelings in most viewers. It's a powerful film.
![]() | Don't Torture a Duckling
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $8.48 (B) Early Fulci giallo is one of the better I've seen from the subgenre. It's got a bit too much down time, but a relatively interesting story and a few harrowing, scenes. (The chain murder is especially nasty)
![]() | The Cat O'Nine Tails
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $5.99 (C+) Lesser known Argento giallo, and not w/o reason. There ain't much wrong with it, really, but not much particularly right either. Just a generic example of the form.
![]() | The Bourne Supremacy (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $11.49 / Used from: $1.57 (B+) After the ultra-generic original this proves to be a surprisingly excellent action movie. It could stand to have a bit more audience identification, but it's got good action and an unrelenting pace.
![]() | The Simpsons Movie (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $0.99 (B) Nowhere near as good as the series was at its prime, obviously, but also a lot better than the last few seasons would lead you to anticipate. Also, it uses the format to more and better effect than anticipated.
![]() | Your Vice Is a Locked Room and Only I Have the Key
Buy used from: $41.99 (B) The most bizarre, outlandish giallo I've ever seen. It benefits from a weird mix of a high sleaze factor combined with a quasi-gothic setting. Also, the title doesn't make any sense after you've seen the film either.
![]() | The Bourne Ultimatum (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $1.50 (B) Breathlessly paced, though the action can't match the best stuff from the previous one. Also, Straitharn lacks the charisma to bring his tedious, stock villain to life. Still, it's generally quite cool, and we get to see more of foxy Julia Stiles and her ever-present, semi-vacant expression.
![]() | Halloween - Unrated Director's Cut (Widescreen Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $15.49 / Used from: $2.45 (D+) Somewhere hidden in here is a mediocre slasher movie, but even that is buried under a terrible backstory, excessive length obnoxiously vulgar dialogue, grating redneck characters etc. Don't whine about this being a remake; it's lousy in its own right.
![]() | A Lizard in a Woman's Skin
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $6.89 (B-) Another Fulci giallo. This one's got about the most convoluted plot of any one I've seen and a relatively good one at that, but the drugged out visuals haven't aged terribly well.
![]() | Identity
Buy new: $11.49 / Used from: $1.00 (B) This mix of psych-thriller, slasher flick and weird-crap film is slickly made and always interesting, but it never quite manages to be genuinely compelling. Still, interesting alone ain't bad.
![]() | Horror Classics, Vol. 1: White Zombie
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $12.56 (B+) Probably the best horror movie I've seen from the 30s. It has maybe Lugosi's finest performance, a great setting and a genuinely eerie tone.
![]() | The Talented Mr. Ripley
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $1.98 (B) Intriguing, well put together drama with good performances across the board, though it's pretty long for a film of this sort and drags a bit in the middle.
![]() | Wishmaster 3 - Beyond the Gates of Hell
Buy new: $9.98 / Used from: $2.63 (D+) This doesn't have some of the huge, obvious problems found in lotsa cheap, direct to DVD stuff, but it's still a huge pile of mediocrity. Also, you can't replace Divoff as the Djinn.
![]() | The Psychic
Buy new: $26.99 / Used from: $14.00 (B) Often called a Giallo, but this is more of an American style supernatural murder-mystery from Fulci. Has a very interesting story and more good visuals, though the twists become a bit predicatable after a while.
![]() | Brotherhood of the Wolf
Buy used from: $0.58 (B+) This is a French martial-arts-period-piece-moster-movie with hyper modern visuals and editing, and even more bizarre than you'd expect. It's pretty awesome, though hurt by an ultra-bland protagonist and some dubious CGI. Still, I ain't seen anything like it.
![]() | Time After Time
Buy used from: $7.50 (B-) HG Wells follows Jack the Ripper in a time machine to 1970s San Francisco! Sadly, they kinda waste my precious time with a romantic subplot, but the central thriller is effective enough.
![]() | Son of Frankenstein / The Ghost of Frankenstein
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $5.13 (C+ for Son, C for Ghost) I've never been a huge fan of the earlier Frankenstein movies, and these ones don't do much for me either. I guess the general Frankenstein milieu doesn't move me. Good performances from Lugosi, though Karloff has always been wasted as the monster.
![]() | Zatoichi the Blind Swordsman, Vol. 8 - Fight, Zatoichi, Fight
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $5.64 (B+) Probably the best Zatoichi film yet, and the most memorable. Here Zatoichi has a baby which he must return to its father. Also, the plot is a bit more consistent and well-paced then usual and it has more emotional punch too.
![]() | Ratatouille
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $9.23 (B) I can't quite understand the love some adults have for the Pixar films, but they're a lot better than almost all the other family and kids stuff in recent years. As always, it looks amazing and has an intriguing enough story. It should be funnier, though.
![]() | Once Upon a Time in China Part 2
Buy new: $9.95 / Used from: $1.35 (B) Not as good as the original and with a sorta random, uncertain pace, but the action is generally very cool, which is all that matters. Totals for the year: 414 total movies, 365 previously unviewed movies.
