Ludwig van Beethoven: Klaviersonaten Vol. 1Ludwig van Beethoven: Klaviersonaten Vol. 1
Buy new: $8.99
First and foremost is German pianist Robert Benz. I know..."who?" you are asking. He is without a doubt the absolute greatest performer of Beethoven's sonatas I have yet to hear!!! What is a travesty is that his recordings are very difficult to find. They are not in one box set and you will spend a fortune (as I have) if you want the original discs. The 9 volumes are avaialble as MP3's here.

Coming in at #2 is Wilhelm Kempff's 1950's mono cycle. It is truly sublime and inspired.

#3 is Wilhelm Kempff again. This time with his stero cycle recorded in the 1960's. Although this has better sound quality than the mono cycle, it does not have the same passion. Although you'll notice that both Kempff's cycles are #2 and #3. (note. this is a recent release and I have not managed to confirm whether or not this is the remastered set or simply the original stero set re-released.)

This was the original release of the remastered stero Kempff cycle as part of the Complete Beethoven Edition released by DG. It has markedly better sound than the original stero release. Again, I do not know if the above is the remastered version or not.

Sometimes I love Richard Goode and sometimes I don't. He is not a Kempff, Fischer, or Arrau...but in the middle sonatas he is superb. And this along with Pommier's are some of the best recorded cycles I have heard.

Beethoven: Complete Piano Sonatas / Daniel BarenboimBeethoven: Complete Piano Sonatas / Daniel Barenboim
Buy new: $60.49 / Used from: $39.99
Daniel Barenboim is a pianist that some people love and some people hate. I myself usually do not prefer him, but this early cycle for EMI always has me coming back. He was young...but he really had some interesting things to say about these works. Not to be confused with his later set on DG.
Wilhelm Backhaus: Decca Beethoven SonatasWilhelm Backhaus: Decca Beethoven Sonatas by Beethoven
Buy new: $99.99 / Used from: $74.98
Wilhelm Backhaus recorded two complete cycles. This is the later stero cycle. His earlier mono cycle is also worth checking out. Both are amazing! But new commers to Backhaus will want to start here.

British pianist Ian Hobson is as aggressive as they come. He sometimes makes me laugh out loud and I feel like I need a seat belt to keep strapped in. An amazing cycle!!

Anton Kuerti reminds me a bit of Peter Serkin (who never recorded a complete cycle, but his individual recordings of the sonatas are some of the best ever captured!!!!)...with that said, Kuerti is not for everyone, but I enjoy his cycle. But it's not in my top 5.
