A Farewell To ArmsA Farewell To Arms by Ernest Hemingway
Buy new: $8.29 / Used from: $0.20
2/1-2/2 Not the best Hemingway I've ever read (OLD MAN AND THE SEA is better and so are the short stories) but still a good read, especially in comparison to other war novels.
The Unvanquished: The Corrected TextThe Unvanquished: The Corrected Text by William Faulkner
Buy new: $10.04 / Used from: $0.36
2/2-2/3 My introduction to Faulkner and a nice easy read. There's not much more to say.
As I Lay Dying: The Corrected TextAs I Lay Dying: The Corrected Text by William Faulkner
Buy new: $9.23 / Used from: $0.44
2/4-2/7 Possibly the best novel on this list. It is absolutely amazing, to say the very least. I'm not sure I've ever read anything more interesting and unique.
Main Street (Signet Classics)Main Street (Signet Classics) by Sinclair Lewis
Buy used from: $0.01
2/8-2/10, 2/17 Not a recommedation. I tried twice to battle my way through it and it simply didn't work. BORING!!!
Of Mice and Men (Penguin Great Books of the 20th Century)Of Mice and Men (Penguin Great Books of the 20th Century) by John Steinbeck
Buy new: $9.00 / Used from: $0.01
2/10-2/11 Sinclair Lewis could have benifited from this book's lesson. Keep it short . . . and good! The meanings and such are real easy to pick up on, which is great.
Things Fall Apart: A NovelThings Fall Apart: A Novel by Chinua Achebe
Buy new: $7.92 / Used from: $1.12
2/12 Sat down in bed to read this and didn't move for four hours. It was that good. The last sentence will make it all worthwhile.
Green Hills of AfricaGreen Hills of Africa by Ernest Hemingway
Buy new: $10.80 / Used from: $0.04
2/13-2/16 Fit well here after and African novel, plus I was on a kind of Hemingway kick. Not stellar, but decent "nonfiction."
The Catcher in the RyeThe Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $0.01
2/25-2/28 A brilliant novel, though you'll think it's pointless if you're not paying good attention. I read it again in May.
ScaramoucheScaramouche by Rafael Sabatini
Buy new: $5.95 / Used from: $1.98
2/28-3/14 To be honest, I thought this would be faster paced and more exciting. Took me a while, and I wouldn't give it more than three stars.
The Age of Spiritual Machines: When Computers Exceed Human IntelligenceThe Age of Spiritual Machines: When Computers Exceed Human Intelligence by Ray Kurzweil
Buy new: $11.56 / Used from: $0.98
3/5-3/6 A friend put me on the trail of this thought-provoking nonfiction. Most parts are good, but I'd recommend skimming. Things can get real technical at times.
The Kite RunnerThe Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini
Buy new: $9.75 / Used from: $0.01
3/15-3/21 One of the top five contemporary novels I've read, and in more than a literary sense. A very exciting and interesting book. Not for the faint of heart.
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's NestOne Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest by Ken Kesey
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $0.01
3/21-4/1 This book has more layers than an onion. Chances are you won't see all of them; I'm sure I didn't. An amazing and positively realistic novel that will make you laugh more than once.
The CaveThe Cave by Jose Saramago
Buy new: $9.89 / Used from: $0.01
3/25-4/6 At first Saramago's interesting (lack of) punctuation might throw you off, but everyone gets used to it eventually. A great read. I'd recommend knowing a bit about Plato's REPUBLIC first.
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-TimeThe Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon
Buy new: $10.08 / Used from: $0.01
3/29-3/30 This is something you can probably whip through in about two hours, and you'll be shocked at how entertaining it is. Learn about autism and love every minute!
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass (Signet Classics)Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass (Signet Classics) by Lewis Carroll
Buy new: $3.95 / Used from: $0.30
4/7 & 4/8 This book contains two very short novels, both of which can be read in a day (or at least that's what I did). It is a kid's book but there's so much interesting and funny stuff in there too!
The Jungle Book (Tor Classics)The Jungle Book (Tor Classics) by Rudyard Kipling
Buy new: $4.99 / Used from: $0.01
4/8-4/12 A mildly entertaining book. By no means among the best on this list. Don't get me wrong: It's fun, but if you're not into this kind of stuff, leave it alone.
The Jungle Book II (Tor Classics)The Jungle Book II (Tor Classics) by Rudyard Kipling
Buy used from: $1.46
4/12-4/14 Better than the original. Still not amazing, but the stories aren't as familiar, so at least you'll have a good time with them. You don't have to read the first one to understand this.
Pride and Prejudice (Bantam Classics)Pride and Prejudice (Bantam Classics) by Jane Austen
Buy new: $4.95 / Used from: $0.01
4/14-4/22 Wow. This is an awesome book, even for guys. Even though nothing ever seems to happen, you'll find yourself wishing there were more pages when you're done.
The Picture of Dorian Gray (Modern Library Classics)The Picture of Dorian Gray (Modern Library Classics) by Oscar Wilde
Buy new: $7.95 / Used from: $1.49
4/22-4/29 I had no idea this had anything to do with homosexuality, and I'm sure I wouldn't have known if the introduction hadn't told me. Ignore it if you want and read it as a decent horror story.
The Taming of the Shrew (The New Folger Library Shakespeare)The Taming of the Shrew (The New Folger Library Shakespeare) by William Shakespeare
Buy new: $5.99 / Used from: $0.58
5/1-5/5 Absolutely hilarious, even if you're not a huge Shakespeare fan. The references aren't that hard to get, especially if you have an active imagination . . .
Blindness (Harvest Book)Blindness (Harvest Book) by Jose Saramago
Buy new: $9.50 / Used from: $0.01
5/18-5/24 Saramago at his best. I'd recommend this before THE CAVE. Both were good. This was amazing. Again, not for the faint of heart.
The Tempest (Folger Shakespeare Library)The Tempest (Folger Shakespeare Library) by William Shakespeare
Buy new: $5.99 / Used from: $0.50
5/19-5/20 Good solid Shakespeare. Harder than TAMING OF THE SHREW, and not as funny, but a very powerful little play.
Hound of the Baskervilles (Aladdin Classics)Hound of the Baskervilles (Aladdin Classics)
Buy new: $5.99 / Used from: $0.01
5/25-5/26 You're not likely to find any deep literary meaning in this one, but it's a good read, and probably the best that mysteries are ever going to get (which, admittedly, isn't saying much).
