![]() | Rent (1996 Original Broadway Cast) by Jeff Potter
Buy new: $29.49 / Used from: $7.73 A modern adaptation of Puccini's La Boheme, this uplifting rock opera is about a group of friends learning to cope with life and love in the midst of poverty and the AIDS epidemic. It does a great job blending humor with drama, and this OBC soundtrack is simply amazing. I was lucky enough to catch Anthony Rapp and Adam Pascal reprising their roles in NY--just wow!

![]() | Miss Saigon (Original 1989 London Cast) by Alain Boublil
Buy new: $32.49 / Used from: $8.30 A modern adaptation of Puccini's Madame Butterfly that is set during the Vietnam War, this poignant musical tells the story of a Vietnamese woman's doomed love affair with an American GI. This original London cast soundtrack is amazing.

![]() | Les Miserables - The Musical That Swept the World (10th Anniversary Concert at the Royal Albert Hall) by Alain Boublil
Buy used from: $10.00 Based on Victor Hugo's novel of the same name, this sweeping musical weaves a story of redemption, oppression and hope. I've listened to the 1985 Original London Cast and the 1987 OBC soundtracks. IMO, this 10th Anniv. Concert soundtrack is the best one out there--they don't call it the Dream Cast for nothing!

![]() | Emma by Jane Austen
Buy used from: $13.99 Tony nominated composer Paul Gordon brings to life Jane Austen's Emma in a delightful new romantic musical comedy which had it's world premiere in Palo Alto, CA. It follows the matchmaking mischief of Emma, an effervescent ingenue who is obsessed with romance but clueless about love. This will serve as a placeholder till a cast CD comes out. Some of the music can be found at indieclectic.com.

![]() | Aida (2000 Original Broadway Cast) by Elton John
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $4.98 Adapted from Verdi's opera of the same name, this musical is about how the Egyptians unknowingly enslave the Nubian Princess Aida, and in her captivity, transforms the lives of the Egyptian Princess Amneris & Egyptian Captain Radames, and offers hope to her fellow enslaved Nubians. A great OBC soundtrack.
|
![]() | Legally Blonde (2007 Original Broadway Cast)
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $14.71 Adapted from the movie, this fun & upbeat musical follows Valley Girl Elle Woods' efforts to be regarded seriously at Harvard Law School to win back her ex. I've only seen the MTV broadcast and would love to catch the show live. Laura Bell Bundy shines as Elle! And the supporting cast is solid. I esp. love the numbers with her Delta Nu sisters.

![]() | In The Heights (Original Broadway Cast Recording)
Buy new: $16.99 / Used from: $16.14 |
![]() | Spring Awakening (2006 Original Broadway Cast) by Duncan Sheik
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $11.00 Based on Frank Wedekind's controversial 1891 German play of the same name, this rock opera explores the tortured inner lives of a handful of adolescents as they deal with family, friends, school, and sexuality. The OBC cast is simply amazing--it's no wonder they won Best Musical for 2007. I'm glad I was able to watch this in NY--twice!
|
![]() | The Phantom of the Opera (Original 1986 London Cast) by Charles Hart
Buy new: $33.99 / Used from: $17.00 Adapted from the Leroux novel of the same name, this musical is about the eccentric, physically deformed genius who terrorizes the Opera House in Paris and falls in love with a young & beautiful actress. Although I found the story and character development a little lacking, the music is amazing.
|
![]() | Mamma Mia! 5th Anniversary [CD/DVD Combination]
Buy new: $22.99 / Used from: $16.77 This musical uses ABBA songs to tell the humorous story of how one girl's search for her father leads to her mother's confrontation with 3 past lovers. A great, fun OBC soundtrack that will definitely get you grooving. :)
|
![]() | Jersey Boys (2005 Original Broadway Cast Recording) by Ronald Melrose
Buy new: $10.97 / Used from: $4.39 This very entertaining musical tells the autobiographical tale of the rise and fall of The Four Seasons. A great OBC soundtrack that will have The Four Seasons songs stuck in your head!
|
![]() | Disney's Beauty and the Beast: The Broadway Musical (Original Broadway Cast Recording) by Alan Menken
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $4.99 Adapted from the Disney movie, this enchanting fairytale about looking beyond outer appearances is now brought to life on stage. I was never a fan of the movie but found myself really loving the stage production. The original songs of the movie are still present, along with great additional numbers such as "Home", "Human Again", and "If I Can't Love Her".
|
![]() | Wicked (2003 Original Broadway Cast) by Kristin Chenoweth
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $8.49 A very creative twist on the tale of the "Wizard of Oz", told through the eyes of the Wicked Witch of the West. The entire soundtrack hasn't enraptured me but Idina Menzel & Kristin Chenoweth definitely shine on the OBC soundtrack. I was lucky enough to catch Menzel reprising her role as Elphaba in London--simply amazing!
|
![]() | Monty Python's Spamalot (2005 Original Broadway Cast) by Eric Idle
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $5.00 This musical adaptation of Monty Python's Spamalot is funny & entertaining as it parodies both the Arthurian legend & musical theater. I was really impressed by the numbers sang by The Lady of the Lake. Not only does she showcase an amazing voice, but comedic chops as well. Marin Mazzie in London was incredible in this role--she had both the voice and the comedy down.
|
![]() | Hairspray (2002 Original Broadway Cast) by Marc Shaiman
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $1.00 The musical adaptation of the movie of the same name. This show is cute and fun and has some catchy numbers, particularly "Mama, I'm A Big Girl Now" and "You Can't Stop The Beat". The staging can be creative at times, even breaking the 4th wall in Act 2. I managed to see it in London with Michael Ball as Edna Turnblad--definitely a hoot to see!
|
![]() | The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee (2005 Original Broadway Cast) by William Finn
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $8.93 A funny and entertaining musical about the pressures 6 kids face competing in the 25th annual Putnam County spelling bee. The music wasn't really memorable. The one standout song was "The I Love You" song. But the characterizations and interactions between the characters and the audience were hilarious. I was pleasantly surprised.
|
![]() | Jekyll & Hyde - The Gothic Musical Thriller (1994 Concept Cast) by Frank Wildhorn
Buy new: $26.99 / Used from: $9.72 Based on Robert Louis Stevenson's book, this dark musical focuses on how Dr. Henry Jekyll's obsessive need to understand the good and evil within men leads him into unleashing the evil within himself. I prefer this soundtrack because Anthony Warlow emotes so much through his singing alone in his dual role as Jekyll/Hyde. Linda Eder also does a great job as Lucy here.
|
![]() | Movin' Out (Based on the Songs and Music of Billy Joel) (2002 Original Broadway Cast) by Billy Joel
Buy new: $11.96 / Used from: $0.77 Unlike traditional musicals, a much visible pianist & band performs all the songs on a platform above the stage while the principal actors dance out the story. I thought the dancing was great & they did a decent job stringing together Billy Joel songs to tell a story about a group of friends growing up in the 60s & dealing with the Vietnam War. Not as interesting as Mammia Mia/Jersey Boys though.
|
![]() | Disney's The Little Mermaid (2008 Original Broadway Cast) by Original Cast Recording
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $11.00 |
![]() | The Lion King (1997 Original Broadway Cast) by Elton John
Buy used from: $8.93 Adapted from the Disney movie, this coming-of-age story about a young lion prince comes to life on stage. Although the costumes are amazing & the songs are beautiful, I didn't really love the stage production--maybe it was too overhyped. I was disappointed with some of the scene stagings also. Anyways, I'd still recommend seeing it & deciding for yourself.
|
![]() | Jesus Christ Superstar (Original London Concept Recording) by Andrew Lloyd Webber
Buy new: $29.49 / Used from: $15.89 I actually saw the touring cast with Ted Neeley playing JC and Corey Glover as Judas. Despite strong performances, I prefer the movie version over the stage production. If you're not familiar with the story, you could get lost watching the musical on stage. With the movie, the acting and storyline can be better understood, and they even managed to put the dated 70s music into context.
|
![]() | Little Shop Of Horrors: Original Cast Album (1982 Off-Broadway Cast) by Howard Ashman
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $2.97 A musical black comedy about a nerdy florist shop worker who raises a plant that feeds on human blood. The storyline is farfetched but the music is very catchy and the humor is offbeat. I really like Lee Wilkof's Seymour. I saw Christiane Noll in a touring company as Audrey and really loved her rendition.
|
![]() | Avenue Q (2003 Original Broadway Cast) by Jeff Marx
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $7.49 A Sesame-Street-type show geared towards adults. With a mixed cast of humans and puppets, this comedic musical tackles very adult topics like porn, racism, homosexuality, and even finding that ever-elusive purpose in life. Although I found most of it amusing, I didn't find it laugh-out-loud funny. But overall, very creatively done.
|
![]() | Young Frankenstein: The New Mel Brooks Musical
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $8.79 |
![]() | Altar Boyz (2005 Original Off-Broadway Cast) by Gary Adler
Buy new: $18.98 / Used from: $8.77 |
![]() | The Color Purple (2005 Original Broadway Cast) by Brenda Russell
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $5.98 Based on Alice Walker's novel, this musical focuses on young, black and uneducated Celie. Although abused throughout her young life, Celie slowly discovers her strength and beauty through her encounters with strong black women Sophia and Shug. Although the performances were amazing, the music wasn't memorable and I'm not sure if a musical is ideal for this story.
|
![]() | The Lord of the Rings Trilogy
Buy new: $29.99 / Used from: $11.86 This show takes all 3 movies and condenses it quite well into one 3-hour musical. If you're a fan of the movies, you'll enjoy the musical. If not (like myself), this won't change your mind but you'll still be impressed by it's grand production. The music is fitting for the story but not very memorable. This will serve as a place holder until the soundtrack comes out.
|
![]() | Sweet Charity (2005 Broadway Revival Cast) by Cy Coleman
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $3.99 I actually saw the touring cast with Molly Ringwald. For Molly not being a natural singer/dancer, I thought she did a great job acting/singing/dancing. Although the show had its funny moments & some good musical numbers, it ended a bit weak for me.
|
![]() | Brooklyn the Musical (Pvg)
Buy new: $14.95 / Used from: $8.50 This musical is about 5 street-corner singers who tell the story of how a young girl, Brooklyn, uses her newfound fame to try to find her father. Although I wasn't too impress with the storyline or soundtrack, I still found it entertaining. The one song standout for me was "Once Upon A Time".
|
![]() | Cats (1981 Original London Cast) by T. S. Eliot
Buy new: $36.99 / Used from: $8.93 Based on T.S. Eliot poems, this is one of the most popular musicals of all time. After finally getting a chance to watch it, all I can think of is why? I think the performances were great but the storyline could have been fleshed out more. I still enjoyed some numbers, particularly The Jellicle Cats, Gus: The Theater Cat, Mr. Mistoffellees & Memory.
