Inspired by a Christmas card, IAWL wasn't conceived as a Christmas movie - but thanks to its public domain status throughout the '70s and '80s, and the resulting round the clock TV airings, it has become a holiday treasure. Often perceived as lightweight 'CapraCorn,' this is actually a very powerful, thought-provoking film.
A Christmas Carol (Ultimate Collector's Edition)(B/W & Color)A Christmas Carol (Ultimate Collector's Edition)(B/W & Color)
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $29.98
A British production, appropriately enough, and the finest film version yet of the Dickens classic. In case you were born yesterday, A Christmas Carol is a timeless wakeup call to all who would ignore the true meaning of Christmas. I would recommend that you ignore the colorized version.

Based on a nostalgic, humorous reminiscence by master raconteur Jean Shepherd, this gem of a film posesses an irresistible spirit and familiarity that transcends generations. Oh, and it's pretty darned funny too.

A Charlie Brown ChristmasA Charlie Brown Christmas
Buy used from: $6.99
It's 1965 and the world is starting to forget what Christmas is all about. Thanks to good 'ol Charlie Schulz (via Linus Van Pelt), it's given a friendly reminder, one which has resonated down through the years. A classic among classics as far as most Boomers are concerned, this one included.
Perry Como ChristmasPerry Como Christmas by Perry Como
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $4.28
A soundtrack for the season, courtesy of the 'other' Mr. C (and Bing's biggest fan). My mom never missed a Perry Como TV special, Christmas or otherwise.

We're all familiar with the poem by Clement C. Moore - this particular edition is included here for the lush, atmospheric illustrations, which capture the eons-old mystery and lore of the season.
Going My Way (Universal Cinema Classics)Going My Way (Universal Cinema Classics)
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $5.98
Not necessarily a Christmas movie, this wartime slice of life on the home front nevertheless elicits the reason for the first Christmas, through its message of giving and caring for others. Bing's appealingly natural performance is a revelation, and his screen chemistry with Barry Fitzgerald is charm personified. A must-see.

A poignant remembrance of one post-WWII Christmas, this is one of my wife's favorites. A very touching story, with terrific performances all around.
It's a Wonderful Christmas: The Best of the Holidays 1940-1965It's a Wonderful Christmas: The Best of the Holidays 1940-1965 by Susan Waggoner
Buy new: $11.53 / Used from: $7.00
A nostalgia-evoking, entertaining look back at Christmases like the ones we used to know, beautifully illustrated with ads and images from the 1940s into the 1960s.
Christmas in ConnecticutChristmas in Connecticut
Buy new: $5.79 / Used from: $5.64
Christmas in Connecticut is pleasant, breezy holiday fare; the surprise treat of this DVD is an extra, Star in the Night, a 1945 two-reeler. It's a simple, straightforward allegory, and it becomes obvious early on where the plot's headed. But whether it was the deft direction of Don Seigel or J. Carrol Naish's effectual performance (or both), I caught myself getting misty-eyed by the end.
A Christmas Gift for You from Phil SpectorA Christmas Gift for You from Phil Spector by Phil Spector
Buy used from: $19.99
A magnificent wall of holiday sound from Spector's stable of stars. Darlene Love's 'Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)' is alone worth any 'Used & New' price.
White ChristmasWhite Christmas

Not a threat to crack the AFI list of 100 greatest films any time soon, the holiday season would nevertheless not be complete without at least one viewing of this appealing VistaVision showcase for the songs of Irving Berlin - including the title tune, sung by the man whose voice has given it a place on the record shelves and CD towers of 50,000,000+ homes over the last 65 years.

If you haven't already, check out the four Gospels. After all, this is really what it's all about.
The Little Drummer BoyThe Little Drummer Boy
Buy new: $16.95 / Used from: $5.50
All Rankin-Bass Christmas Specials from 1964-70 are worthwhile (after that they get quirky), but this one stands out from the pack. Obviously it has the most genuine Christmas message, but beyond that everything from the music (Vienna Boys Choir), to the reverent tone, to the performances of the voice actors (Greer Garson, Jose Ferrer) make this overlooked gem truly memorable.
