Anna Karenina (Oprah's Book Club)Anna Karenina (Oprah's Book Club) by Leo Tolstoy
Buy new: $11.05 / Used from: $0.94
This is a must read, despite parts I find extremely annoying (sexist portrayal of female characters as either crazy/illogical/evil or pure/good/stupid, and endless pages about how wonderful nature is).
Crime and PunishmentCrime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky
Buy new: $11.53 / Used from: $2.94
No one provides quite the insight into the human psyche as Dostoevsky.
Pride And PrejudicePride And Prejudice by Jane Austen
Buy new: $7.95 / Used from: $3.69
One of my two favorite books, the other being Gone With the Wind. I love all of Jane Austen's books, but this one is by far my favorite. The others are listed in order of preference.

Mansfield Park (Penguin Classics)Mansfield Park (Penguin Classics) by Jane Austen
Buy new: $8.00 / Used from: $1.01
Vanity Fair (Penguin Classics)Vanity Fair (Penguin Classics) by William Makepeace Thackeray
Buy new: $9.00 / Used from: $2.17
This is a really great story. Although the main character is a bit on the shallow/materialistic side, it's nice to see an intelligent female character written by a man during the 19th century.
Ivanhoe (Penguin Classics)Ivanhoe (Penguin Classics) by Walter Scott
Buy new: $8.00 / Used from: $1.68
If chivalry and knights are things you enjoy, this book is for you. Robin Hood makes an appearance as well.
The Once and Future KingThe Once and Future King by Terence Hanbury White
Buy new: $13.60 / Used from: $2.99
Again with the knights and chivalry. This is the entire King Arthur legend, and includes The Sword in the Stone.
Middlemarch (Vintage Classics)Middlemarch (Vintage Classics) by George Eliot
Buy new: $9.95 / Used from: $5.51
My favorite part about this book is how Eliot weaves several narratives into one.
Little Women (Signet Classics)Little Women (Signet Classics) by Louisa May Alcott
Buy new: $3.95 / Used from: $1.58
I've been meaning to read this one again for a while. It's the story of four sisters growing up.
Washington Square (Penguin Classics)Washington Square (Penguin Classics) by Henry James
Buy new: $9.00 / Used from: $5.00
The story of a girl who falls for the wrong guy her father hates, and the consequences that follow.
Tess of the D'Urbervilles (Dover Thrift Editions)Tess of the D'Urbervilles (Dover Thrift Editions) by Thomas Hardy
Buy new: $3.50 / Used from: $0.90
An interesting study on the view of women/purity/chastity during the 19th century. Tess, from a poor family, is raped by a rich man. Everyone seems to think it is her fault, and that she is a terrible person. Perhaps most fascinating, the novel manages somehow never to even say the words sex or rape, but tell the entire story through insinuations and innuendo.
The Scarlet LetterThe Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne
Buy used from: $2.99
We see a similar view of women presented here when Hester Prinn has a baby and refuses to tell anyone who the father is.
Wuthering Heights (Norton Critical Editions)Wuthering Heights (Norton Critical Editions) by Emily Brontë
Buy new: $12.37 / Used from: $2.95
Emily is my favorite Bronte.
Jane Eyre (Fine Edition)Jane Eyre (Fine Edition) by Charlotte Bronte
Buy new: $32.69 / Used from: $19.95
Charlotte's most celebrated work.
Villette (Signet Classics)Villette (Signet Classics) by Charlotte Brontë
Buy new: $5.95 / Used from: $3.00
My favorite book by Charlotte, although I hated the ending. I think that might have been her intention.
Shirley (Penguin Classics)Shirley (Penguin Classics) by Charlotte Brontë
Buy new: $9.00 / Used from: $2.94
Charlotte at her worst, but still worth reading. Beware of too many pages describing scenery and day-to-day tasks without much going on.
Agnes Grey (Oxford World's Classics)Agnes Grey (Oxford World's Classics) by Anne Bronte
Buy new: $9.95 / Used from: $4.94
Anne reminds me a little bit of Austen. Although she isn't celebrated as much as her sisters, I thought Agnes Grey was a great book. It tells a nice story in plain English, something neither of her sisters ever does. And we also see what it was like to be a governess during the 19th century - a figure that fit neither into high society or low society.
The Bell Jar [BELL JAR]The Bell Jar [BELL JAR] by Sylvia(Author) ; Plath, Sylvia(Illustrator); McCullough, Frances(Foreword by) Plath
Buy used from: $9.18
The first half of this novel is surprisingly light; then suddenly the reader is plunged into much darker material. It is really thought-provoking. I like this edition because it has bonus material in the back about the author that I found very interesting.
The AwakeningThe Awakening by Kate Chopin
Buy new: $6.95 / Used from: $2.85
The story of a woman who does not fit into her position in the world of her time period.

Narrative of the Life of Frederick DouglassNarrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass by Frederick Douglass
Buy new: $3.99 / Used from: $3.19
Frederick Douglass's story of his life. A great book to help you try and understand what it was like to be a slave.
Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl - Literary Touchstone ClassicIncidents in the Life of a Slave Girl - Literary Touchstone Classic by Harriet Jacobs
Buy new: $4.99 / Used from: $4.25
The poignant autobiography of a female slave, illustrating the unique deprivations that female slaves were forced to endure.
Uncle Tom's Cabin (Thrift Edition)Uncle Tom's Cabin (Thrift Edition) by Harriet Beecher Stowe
Buy new: $4.00 / Used from: $1.94
The once controversial book that angered so many in the South before the Civil War, it is also a compelling story.
Gone with the WindGone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $5.12
My favorite book because of the romance and history, it is important to read Gone with the Wind in context. Life in the South was not really like it is portrayed here, especially for slaves, but it is still a great book. It also illustrates the myth that so many in the South wanted to uphold both before, during, and after the Civil War.
Native Son (Bloom's Modern Critical Interpretations)Native Son (Bloom's Modern Critical Interpretations) by Richard Wright
Buy new: $36.00 / Used from: $29.53
The story of a black man on trial for murder in a very racist atmosphere.
Uncle Tom's ChildrenUncle Tom's Children by Richard Wright
Buy used from: $0.01
The stories in Uncle Tom's Children are illustrative of the racism African Americans faced during the early 20th century. Some of them are autobiographical.
His Dark Materials Trilogy (The Golden Compass; The Subtle Knife; The Amber Spyglass)His Dark Materials Trilogy (The Golden Compass; The Subtle Knife; The Amber Spyglass) by Philip Pullman
Buy new: $37.80 / Used from: $19.98
Although they are nominally meant to be for children, these novels are worth reading for adults because of their commentary on organized religion and the meaning of original sin.
Nineteen Eighty-FourNineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell
Buy new: $10.37 / Used from: $4.45
Although we aren't living in the world described in this novel, it is somewhat disturbing how close we are to it in other ways.
