![]() | Short Cuts - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $35.99 / Used from: $13.79 Order and chaos dished in equal parts, as is in life itself. I think this movie is flawless, and it's very interesting to read the Raymond Carver stories (included here in the Criterion edition)and see how Altman informed his movie from them. Amazing work.

![]() | About Schmidt
Buy new: $5.79 / Used from: $0.01 Nicholson is brilliant in his portrayal of not much of a guy Warren Schmidt and his not much of a life. Recurring images of cattle in opposition to desperate lip-service to an adventuresome take-charge spirit reveal a life of (nearly) absolute fecklessness. One of the best endings ever.

![]() | The Royal Tenenbaums (The Criterion Collection)
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $6.62 My favorite Wes Anderson, and I like ALL of Wes Anderson's work. His films are peopled with characters who both amuse and touch you, and the addition of Gene Hackman to his stable of players was inspired. Redemption and loss without the oft-accompanying piety.

![]() | Ragtime
Buy new: $9.49 / Used from: $4.75 Broad picture of America in the early 1900s, with its burgeoning cult of celebrity and its rampant rascism. James Cagney's last movie.
|
![]() | The Last Picture Show (Definitive Director's Cut Special Edition)
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $5.34 Small-town Texas in the early 1950s in stark, but not humorless, relief. In many ways The Last Picture Show is an indictment of slack-jawed yokelism, but certainly not at the expense of sneering at its characters. A letter-perfect rendition of Larry McMurtry's excellent novel.

![]() | Gandhi (Widescreen Two-Disc Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $10.41 Ben Kingsley was born to play Gandhi. This film is grand in the strict narrative sense, but does not give short shrift to Gandhi's all-important ideas. An amazing performance in an amazing movie about an amazing man.

![]() | Grand Canyon
Buy new: $9.98 / Used from: $1.23 Stuff happens. And we just have to live through it. And there's always opportunity for warmth. That's basically it.

![]() | The Ice Storm
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $2.77 Suburban gothic that never panders. Features the incomparable Joan Allen.

![]() | Wonder Boys
Buy new: $9.49 / Used from: $1.17 People you just love to watch. Easily Michael Douglas' best movie.
|
![]() | Rushmore - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $35.99 / Used from: $14.98 Max Fischer is a great character, sort of a demented teen Don Quixote, and Bill Murray was robbed of the Academy Award for his performance in Rushmore, as far as I'm concerned. Great soundtrack.
|
![]() | Straw Dogs - Criterion Collection
Buy used from: $23.93 The misogyny charge (which I'm not sure I get)aside, Dustin Hoffman stars as a mathematician whose meek sensibilities couldn't abide the rough edges of American life, and who finds that sometimes trouble just can't and shoudn't be avoided.
|
![]() | Felicia's Journey
Buy used from: $3.98 "Part Jack-the-Ripper and part Winnie-the-Pooh" is how Bob Hoskins described the serial killer Hillditch he portrays in Felicia's Journey. There's one dream sequence that only someone with a heart of stone wouldn't be moved by. My favorite Atom Egoyan movie.
|
![]() | Trouble in Mind
Buy used from: $25.99 It's an OUTRAGE that this doesn't exist on DVD. A unique, imaginatively rendered story.
|
![]() | Bottle Rocket
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $4.20 "They'll never catch me. Because I'm f***ing innocent." That line is profoundly insightful into the character of Dignan. A great love story coupled with a dire, wickedly funny attempt at life as a desperado. As usual, Anderson's selection of soundtrack music is impeccable.

![]() | O Brother, Where Art Thou?
Buy new: $9.49 / Used from: $4.64 Universally admired. I haven't met anyone yet who didn't like this.

Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $4.11 |
![]() | Brewster Mccloud [VHS]
Buy used from: $16.22 Altman's Brewster McCloud is more ambitious and quirky than most directors working today on their BEST day. It's not the best movie ever made, but it's pretty darn good, and a serious lapse is that this can't be had on DVD.
