Fantastic Children's Animated Films
By an Amazon.com customer
The Last UnicornThe Last Unicorn
Buy new: $11.49 / Used from: $4.34
While the animation is limited and somewhat stilted, this beautiful film captures the haunting fantasy of Peter S. Beagle's classic book. A strange and wonderful tale.
My Neighbor TotoroMy Neighbor Totoro
Buy used from: $63.90
There simply is no finer animated film than this gentle masterpiece from Hiyao Miyazaki, partly inspired by his own childhood experiences. The tale of two children and their emerging friendship with the nature spirits of their new neighbourhood is deeply moving and a joy to behold.
Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron (Widescreen) [Animated]Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron (Widescreen) [Animated]
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $2.75
A captivating tale of wild horses living in the frontier. It's all about relationships, between Spirit and his well realised female friend Rain, between Spirit and Little Creek. the Lakota American Indian and between all of these and the white man. All this without talking animals. A fine soundtrack by Bryan Adams carries the moods.
Hoodwinked (Widescreen Edition)Hoodwinked (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $12.95 / Used from: $1.30
Witty, fast-paced CGI unfolding as a detective story with a pace that never lets up! The range of character perspectives, lively cast and compelling story make the somewhat limited animation style work perfectly.
The Road to El DoradoThe Road to El Dorado
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $3.78
The best animated male buddy movie ever, this carries something of the Bing and Bob formula, but rapidly transcends its influences. With entertaining, morally ambiguous characters, including a fine female lead, this action tale explodes with colour and imagination, but it is strong writing and clever dialogue that really make it sparkle.
Help, I'm A Fish! [ NON-USA FORMAT, PAL, Reg.2 Import - Great Britain ]Help, I'm A Fish! [ NON-USA FORMAT, PAL, Reg.2 Import - Great Britain ]
Buy used from: $21.25
The best animated fish film! Beginning with human characters and moving into a completely aquatic world, this works because of strong characterisation, a neat premise, tight plotting, and strong songs and voices. A bit sinister in places, but with real heart, this is an overlooked gem! Unfortunately, US release is retitled "A Fish Tale" with horrible cover.
Beauty and the Beast (Special Platinum Edition)Beauty and the Beast (Special Platinum Edition)
Buy used from: $17.99
One of the later Disney studio's better efforts, featuring a fine heroine and fascinating hero, along with strong writing and casting, and good musical numbers.
ThumbelinaThumbelina
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $4.40
A lovely adaptation of the children's story, with a heroine and hero who out-Disney that studio with their spirited personalities and sparks of a real romantic onscreen relationship. Lots of adventures and strong supporting characters along the way make this a satisfying romantic film for younger viewers.
Mulan (Special Edition)Mulan (Special Edition)
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $10.46
Definitely one of Disney's better recent efforts, with fine characterisation, amusing songs that carry the story, well-balanced characters that never get annoying, along with a real sense of menace at points. As usual, don't bother with any sequels.
Olive the Other ReindeerOlive the Other Reindeer
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $6.48
Brilliant contemporary Christmas tale animated in a flat style, with a sense of real joy and fun. The voice talent also shines!
Toy Story 2 (Two-Disc Special Edition)Toy Story 2 (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy used from: $24.92
An enjoyable adventure making full use of an ensemble cast, consistently funny and engaging writing and worthy characters. This easily eclipses its groundbreaking (in animation terms) predecessor.
Spirited AwaySpirited Away
Buy new: $18.49 / Used from: $14.85
A number of the Miyazaki films from Studio Ghibli belong on this list, so it's difficult to choose. Some are definitely for older viewers, but this one is family friendly, if somewhat complex. Rich and dreamlike, scenes from this film may stay with you long afterwards.
The Land Before Time (Anniversary Edition)The Land Before Time (Anniversary Edition)
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $7.50
The original of the series carries the most drama and depth, though many in this series are worthwhile. Littlefoot and friends embark on a long journey in the harsh forbidding prehistoric world.
BaltoBalto
Buy used from: $15.95
While this was inspired by a true story, the tale of Balto in this film is presented in classic animation style, complete with misunderstood protagonist and comic relief talking animal characters. It is a classic quest narrative about selfless heroism, well-told in this animated form.
Whisper of the HeartWhisper of the Heart
Buy new: $24.99 / Used from: $19.98
An unusual film for Studio Ghibli, the only feature from gifted director Yoshinobu Kondo tells the realistically set story of the joys of creativity and an emerging adolescent romance. A beautifully made, thoughtful film.
Mumfie - The Movie [VHS]Mumfie - The Movie [VHS]
Buy used from: $9.19
A first rate animated movie (and also television series) for young children, featuring no violence, but interesting characters and fascinating adventures, adapted by Britt Allcroft from Katherine Tozer's 1936 book. Why this lovely animated work isn't on DVD yet is a mystery!
Wallace and Gromit: Three Amazing AdventuresWallace and Gromit: Three Amazing Adventures
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $6.72
These Wallace and Gromit claymation short films are in the 23-30 minute range and are the pinnacle of the artform. My personal favourite remains the first, which is simple and beautiful. The second is probably the funniest, while the third may be too much for younger children. Cracking animation!
Tarzan (Special Edition)Tarzan (Special Edition)
Buy new: $20.99 / Used from: $15.00
The Disney studio's spin on Tarzan works by reason of its strong attention to character dialogue and pacing, along with fine modern design. From the opening scene the blend of music (including some Phil Collins' songs) and strong direction is there, along with the blend of the tragic and comic that make this unique, but not for really young viewers.
Charlotte's Web (Widescreen Edition)Charlotte's Web (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $11.49 / Used from: $1.03
A fairly faithful rendition of the classic book made in 1972, this film balances the delicate themes of the joy and sadness of life well. The fine animation and voicework prove that the Hanna Barbera studio could make beautiful, well-animated feature films.
The 12 Tasks Of Asterix (Remastered Version) (ENGLISH COVER)The 12 Tasks Of Asterix (Remastered Version) (ENGLISH COVER)
Buy used from: $11.95
With all the usual wit, historical satire and broad comedy of the books, this film follows the ancient Gauls Asterix and Obelix as they attempt to complete the tasks set for them by Julius Caesar. Unlike the books this has some surreal and mythological elements that just add to the fun.
The Emperor's New Groove - The Ultimate Groove (2-Disc Collector's Edition)The Emperor's New Groove - The Ultimate Groove (2-Disc Collector's Edition)
Buy used from: $12.50
A somewhat overlooked Disney film that centres on an antiheroic Inca emperor, Kuzco, voiced by David Spade, who spends much of the film as a llama. The supporting characters are given plenty of space and this is rich with colour, inventive use of animation (including maps), music and gags that are genuinely funny, without shooting over the heads of its younger audience.
Kiki's Delivery ServiceKiki's Delivery Service
Buy new: $23.99 / Used from: $20.15
Another classic Miyazaki film from Studio Ghibli, this tale of young witch Kiki becoming independent in the world (accompanied by her talking cat) is captivating, with the magic in the people and her ingenuity. Not all Ghibli films are for children, but this one is! Avoid John Lassiter's opening spoiler laden introduction until you have seen the film!
Chuck Jones CollectionChuck Jones Collection
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $5.99
A collection of six short films adapting stories by Kipling and Selden with a good degree of fidelity. The real attractions here are "Rikki Tikki Tavi" and "The White Seal" which are small masterpieces. The others are enjoyable - "Mowgli's Brothers" makes use of one plot strand from "The Jungle Book," but the Cricket stories fare better and are warmly told.
The Prince of EgyptThe Prince of Egypt
Buy new: $10.49 / Used from: $6.75
Huge animated epic from Jeffrey Katzenberg's team at Dreamworks. Taking a character driven approach to the Biblical tale of Moses and Pharaoh, this nonetheless showcases state of the art set-pieces and maintains a strong pace.
Mystery of the Third Planet-NlaMystery of the Third Planet-Nla
Buy used from: $0.09
Amazing scifi mystery from Russia in 1981, this extraordinarily imaginative film tells the tale of a girl and two adult scientists, journeying through space in search of new animals. Poor quality transfer (probably VHS) with indifferent voicework but original music. A shortened redub with new music is part of "Tales from my Childhood, volume 1," ASIN: 6305340552, but I haven't seen this yet.
Sleeping Beauty (Two-Disc Platinum Edition)Sleeping Beauty (Two-Disc Platinum Edition)
Buy new: $19.49 / Used from: $9.77
A superb Disney film from 1959. With a style unlike any before it, the stylish flat look envisaged by conceptual artist Eyvind Earle influenced much animation that has followed. This film has better developed characters than the earlier Princess films. The classical music by Tchaikovsky, in places turned to song, blends in well.
The Wind in the WillowsThe Wind in the Willows
Buy new: $15.49 / Used from: $1.96
A faithful, albeit edited, adaptation of the novel made in 1983. This stop-motion adaptation from British studio Cosgrove Hall takes its time spinning the tale of Mole, Ratty, Toad and Badger, conveying appropriate old world charm and featuring top British voice actors.
Azur and Asmar: The Princes' QuestAzur and Asmar: The Princes' Quest
Buy new: $15.99 / Used from: $12.34
Thoughtful and completely different from any US animation, this recent French film (here well dubbed into English), directed by Michel Ocelot, is gently paced but beautiful. Patience will be needed to acclimatise to the pacing, the different approach to CGI - limited in movement but glorious in Byzantine detail - of this picture book like fairy-tale.
Junkers Come HereJunkers Come Here
Buy used from: $2.82
Slowly and elegantly paced, this gentle story tells the story of a lonely girl, neglected by her parents, and her friendship with her faithful, apparently talking schnauzer, Junkers. The unfolding of personal interactions and attention to detail won't be to everyone's tastes, but this well rewards patient viewing.
Dot and The KangarooDot and The Kangaroo
Buy new: $22.49 / Used from: $14.95
An Australian animated film from 1977, directed by Yoram Gross and based on a classic book by Ethel Pedley. It takes an unusual approach, melding animated Australian fauna with photographic backgrounds, conjuring a unique feel. At times scary, but essentially gentle and moving, evoking a forgotten era.
