While the animation is limited and somewhat stilted, this beautiful film captures the haunting fantasy of Peter S. Beagle's classic book. A strange and wonderful tale.

A captivating tale of wild horses living in the frontier. It's all about relationships, between Spirit and his well realised female friend Rain, between Spirit and Little Creek. the Lakota American Indian and between all of these and the white man. All this without talking animals. A fine soundtrack by Bryan Adams carries the moods.

The best animated male buddy movie ever, this carries something of the Bing and Bob formula, but rapidly transcends its influences. With entertaining, morally ambiguous characters, including a fine female lead, this action tale explodes with colour and imagination, but it is strong writing and clever dialogue that really make it sparkle.

One of the later Disney studio's better efforts, featuring a fine heroine and fascinating hero, along with strong writing and casting, and good musical numbers.

Definitely one of Disney's better recent efforts, with fine characterisation, amusing songs that carry the story, well-balanced characters that never get annoying, along with a real sense of menace at points. As usual, don't bother with any sequels.

An enjoyable adventure making full use of an ensemble cast, consistently funny and engaging writing and worthy characters. This easily eclipses its groundbreaking (in animation terms) predecessor.

An unusual film for Studio Ghibli, the only feature from gifted director Yoshinobu Kondo tells the realistically set story of the joys of creativity and an emerging adolescent romance. A beautifully made, thoughtful film.

These Wallace and Gromit claymation short films are in the 23-30 minute range and are the pinnacle of the artform. My personal favourite remains the first, which is simple and beautiful. The second is probably the funniest, while the third may be too much for younger children. Cracking animation!

A fairly faithful rendition of the classic book made in 1972, this film balances the delicate themes of the joy and sadness of life well. The fine animation and voicework prove that the Hanna Barbera studio could make beautiful, well-animated feature films.

A somewhat overlooked Disney film that centres on an antiheroic Inca emperor, Kuzco, voiced by David Spade, who spends much of the film as a llama. The supporting characters are given plenty of space and this is rich with colour, inventive use of animation (including maps), music and gags that are genuinely funny, without shooting over the heads of its younger audience.

A collection of six short films adapting stories by Kipling and Selden with a good degree of fidelity. The real attractions here are "Rikki Tikki Tavi" and "The White Seal" which are small masterpieces. The others are enjoyable - "Mowgli's Brothers" makes use of one plot strand from "The Jungle Book," but the Cricket stories fare better and are warmly told.

Amazing scifi mystery from Russia in 1981, this extraordinarily imaginative film tells the tale of a girl and two adult scientists, journeying through space in search of new animals. Poor quality transfer (probably VHS) with indifferent voicework but original music. A shortened redub with new music is part of "Tales from my Childhood, volume 1," ASIN: 6305340552, but I haven't seen this yet.

A faithful, albeit edited, adaptation of the novel made in 1983. This stop-motion adaptation from British studio Cosgrove Hall takes its time spinning the tale of Mole, Ratty, Toad and Badger, conveying appropriate old world charm and featuring top British voice actors.

Slowly and elegantly paced, this gentle story tells the story of a lonely girl, neglected by her parents, and her friendship with her faithful, apparently talking schnauzer, Junkers. The unfolding of personal interactions and attention to detail won't be to everyone's tastes, but this well rewards patient viewing.
