The Door into SummerThe Door into Summer by Robert A. Heinlein

Heinlein does sci-fi with a sense of style, humor and action that few can match. This is my 2nd favorite summertime read of all time.
Dandelion WineDandelion Wine by Ray Bradbury
Buy new: $11.51 / Used from: $4.89
Bradbury is one of the all time great masters of sci-fi. Dandelion Wine is one of his finest works, a look at childhood with all of its fantasy intact.
The Stars My DestinationThe Stars My Destination by Alfred Bester
Buy new: $11.16 / Used from: $1.42
There's a good reason why sci-fi fans and writers worship Alfred Bester. This is simply one of the best sci-fi books of all time.
The HobbitThe Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien
Buy new: $8.00 / Used from: $0.01
Start small with Tolkien's classic tale of a Hobbit caught up with a wizard, a band of dwarves, a dragon, and a magic ring.
The Lord of the Rings: 50th Anniversary, One Vol. EditionThe Lord of the Rings: 50th Anniversary, One Vol. Edition by J.R.R. Tolkien
Buy new: $13.00 / Used from: $2.99
In all the fanfare of his devoted following and the Peter Jackson movies, it sometimes gets overlooked just how great a writer Tolkien is. When you read this you'll be impressed by the scope of the tale, but make sure to pay attention to the words as well.
The SilmarillionThe Silmarillion by J.R.R. Tolkien
Buy new: $23.10 / Used from: $11.69
If the Hobbit reads like a kids book, and the Lord of The Rings like an epic fantasy, The Silmarillion is mythological. It's a dense, meaty telling of the history of middle-earth.
The Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide to the GalaxyThe Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams
Buy new: $13.60 / Used from: $6.59
The funniest book I've ever read and my all time favorite summertime read.

Buy new: $87.75 / Used from: $74.99
I considered being a cartoonist in my youth, but the fact I have trouble with stick figures sort of put the kibosh on that aspiration. (Shame it doesn't stop some) Watterson is a grandmaster of the art funny, poignant, thoughtfull and brought together in this beautiful, but extremely heavy collection.
The Essential Ellison: A 50-Year RetrospectiveThe Essential Ellison: A 50-Year Retrospective by Harlan Ellison
This needs to be re-issued in an affordable form. You can still get the 35 year version. Ellison is one of the greats, never has so much bite come straight from the heart.
The Rediscovery of Man: The Complete Short Science Fiction of Cordwainer SmithThe Rediscovery of Man: The Complete Short Science Fiction of Cordwainer Smith by Cordwainer Smith
Buy new: $20.00 / Used from: $15.75
The NESFA collections can be a little pricey but are worth every penny. Smith is wonderfully imaginative and well written. My only complaint is that he wasn't more prolific. This and the novel Norstrillia represent his entire catalog.
The Avram Davidson Treasury: A Tribute CollectionThe Avram Davidson Treasury: A Tribute Collection by Avram Davidson

Perdido Street StationPerdido Street Station by China Mieville

The Three of Swords: Swords and Deviltry, Swords Against Death, Swords in the MistThe Three of Swords: Swords and Deviltry, Swords Against Death, Swords in the Mist by Fritz Leiber

Leiber is one of the grandfathers of modern fantasy, often overshadowed by Tolkien and Lewis. This is definitely not kid's stuff and darker then both of those authors. If you love fantasy this is a must read.

Some argue with Philbricks take on history, but he has crafted an engrossing work of history.
ConnectionsConnections by James Burke
